Looking for a suitable subject for the Swiss-American Historical Society within the reach of a classicist, I found the question of the Ancient Greek Sources in the American Constitution. Although not a historian, I thought that would mean treating matters of historical significance as well as of unbroken continuance of the effects of classical thinking. In addition to that the Constitution is one of the living connections which links the mighty United States of America with the tiny Swiss Confederation. Founded in September 1963, the Stanford Club of Switzerland is one of the many clubs which, all over the world, bring into contact former students and scholars of Stanford University. In Switzerland, there are at present nearly seventy of them - about half being American, half Swiss - with activities extending from scientific research and work in international organizations to banking and industrial management. Before the appearance of Gil Vicente, one cannot speak of a theatre in Portugal except, perhaps, of some traces of religious dramatizations during the Middle Ages and of some documents of allegorical theatre during the times of D. Joāo II—a theatre based entirely on scenography and in which the literary world was almost entirely unknown. Anrique da Mota, although proportioning some aid in the understanding of Gil Vicente’s theatre, seems to be overshadowed by the impressive figure of the latter. The paper read by Dr. A. Maissen at the New York meeting of the SAHS dealt with the interesting subject of Captain Henry Wirz . Although one of the best known Swiss participating in the Civil War, he is not listed among the subjects of the book Prominent Americans of Swiss Origin. This probably was no oversight, for he was and is a controversial figure.
