New York was the place where the earliest permanent official contact was established between the two countries when a consulate was opened under Henri Casimer de Rham of Ynerdon in the summer of 1822. New York was the first consular district in the U.S. to become a permanent consulate general in 1933. Before the advent of Mr. Collier, Everglades had been a sport-fisherman's outpost. There was an inn, the Rod & Gun Club, catering to yacht-borne fishing enthusiasts, and three or four small bungalows harbored families who made their modest living as guides. The exhibition of Swiss drawings which travels from Washington, D.C. (October 7 -29, 1967) to New York (Pierpont Morgan Library: November 15, 1967 - January 2, 1968), San Francisco (M.H. de young Memorial Museum: January 14 - February 12, 1968) and Chicago (Art Institute: February 24 - March 26, 1968) 1) poses two problems:

1) Why did drawing and generally graphic expression play such an important role in the work of Swiss artists from Urs Graf to Giacometti?

2) What was the role of Swiss art within the European creative community, in other words, what is its qualitative position?

On October 7, 1967, the exhibition "Swiss Drawings, Masterpieces of Five Centuries" opened at t he National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. It will stay here until October 29, 1967, and will then travel to New York to be shown at the Pierpont Morgan Library from November 15 1967 - January 2 1968. After their showing in New York , the drawings will be exhibited at the M.H. de Young Memorial Museum in San Francisco from January 14 - February 12, 1968, and at the Art Institute in Chicago from February 2i4 - March 26, 1968.

It is the primary purpose of this study to examine the part played by the “nego” and “gente de côr as an influence and subject in the friction of Jorge Amado. To do this one must first understand the social and cultural role of the colored element in contemporary Brazil. National as well as foreign sociologists and anthropologists have methodologically researched this area. Their conclusions provide a helpful and necessary perspective for this study. This blended socio-literary approach will provide, not necessarily a revolutionary view, but, hopefully, a more profound understanding of the works of Brazil’s greatest fiction writer Jorge …

The English translation is excellent. The illustrations are of that high quality characteristic of this gifted artist. So are the reproductions made in Switzerland. The recipes are preceded by an introduction in which we learn much about the history and philosophy of Swiss cooking. The traditional Swiss meals were simple, but very carefully prepared and served.
