Dear Compatriots and Friends:

I is the major task of this newsletter to report to the members of the SAHS on the eighth annual meeting which was held on November 20, 1971, at the Swiss Embassy in Washington. Some twenty people attended and much important business was transacted. The participants very much wished that more of you could have been there to help in the decision-making process and to enjoy the gracious and cultured hospitality extended to the SAHS by Dr. and Mrs. Hans Muller.

One of the recurrent themes in the long history of U.S.-Swiss relations has to do with the reciprocal interest in each other's educational systems. Americans went to visit the schools and institutes of Pestalozzi and Fellenberg in the early 19th century and returned full with ideas of how to improve schools over here. They had successors who time and again hoped to get inspiration for their own work by studying how the Swiss went about the important task of educating the young.

I am glad to inform you that in 1970, our financial position remained favorable. This could be attributed first of all to the agreeable experience that the majority of our members had paid their annual fee without further request, although in some cases, the treasurer's efforts were required in the form of reiterated reminders, when the members seemed to have forgotten to pay their contributions. So the result is quite satisfactory, as from the 229 ordinary members 206 paid for 1970, which means a percentage of 89.95%.

As reported previously, "Articles of Incorporation of Swiss American Historical Society" were filed with the Recorder of Deeds, Washington, D. C., on March 23, 1970. This was a relatively smooth and simple procedure. However, the chief object of incorporating our society was reached only after considerable aditional effort.

The New York annual meeting of December 12, 1970, decided to create two new committees, a nominating committee and a publications committee. According to Article VI, Section 2, of the SAHS Constitution the president "shall appoint special committees for research work, the printing and publishing of pamphlets periodicals and books and such other specific activities as may be deemed necessary in carrying out the objects and purposes of this Society." The question we set out to investigate was whether Caesar exhibited an organized policy toward the economy of the Spanish provinces. Two distinct aspects have been considered: that of Spain itself and its economic growth and that of Caesar personally and his policies.

During the first century B.C. the Spanish peninsula was exhibiting signs of the economic growth which reached its height during the first two centuries of Imperial times. Mining, industry and commerce were flourishing. Agriculture was becoming ore diverse and profitable. At the end of June, 1970, the Swiss Federal Council created eight new consulates in the United States and Puerto Rico. They were all of the same type, namely honorary offices, to be manned by honorary consuls. Honorary consuls, as distinct from consuls general and consuls, are not career officers. Thev receive their nomination in recognition of personal achievements - at their place of domicile. The newly elected honorary consuls come from such diverse walks of life as private enterprise, physics, sociology, business, engineering, textile industry, medicine and hotel industry. On the weekend of August 29 and 30 New Glarus, Wisconsin, celebrated its 125th anniversary. The festivities, carefully prepared over a long period of time by a hard working and dedicated executive committee under the chairmanship of Paul Grossenbacher, included such events as a parade, complete with highschool bands, majorettes, open cars for dignitaries, folkloristic groups, and floats and a barbecued chicken picnic on Saturday afternoon, a major folkloristic program with Mannerchor , yodeling by individuals and groups, folk dancing, Fahnenschwingen and Alphornblasen in the highschool gyrrmasium on Saturday evening and came to a climax at the dedication of the …

This past summer the Swiss American Historical Society lost the services of its Secretary and Newsletter Editor, Lukas F. Burckhardt. Dr. Burckhardt, after many years as Labor and Cultural Counselor at the Embassy of Switzerland in Washington, was promoted to become chief of the Chultural Section of the Swiss Political Department in Bern and he felt that he, therefore, hadto relinquish his SAHS offices. Knowing better than anybody else how much Lukas Burckhardt meant for ouor Society, I was very reluctant to accept his resignation, yet in the end could do nothing but honor his wishes.

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

The purpose of this dissertation is to provide the first thorough and systematic study of Galdós cuentos, to discover and describe their nature, to relate them to his total work and to suggest what they reveal about the artist and his development. Each story's literary elements are identified and discussed in terms of their function within the organic whole. The elements considered are the use of costumbrismo, dominant orientation, humor, language, literary resonance, lyricism, point of view, structure and symbolism. Ecuador is known in the world of letters for more than one writer of continental renown, among them being José Joaquín Olmedo, Juan León Mera, Juan Montalvo, Jorge Carrera Andrade, Alfredo Pareja Diez-Canseco, and Jorge Icaza. Critics, in general, have rated the last as the greatest of the indigenist writers of Ecuador as well as one of the most outstanding novelists of the Indian theme in all of Hispanic America. Nevertheless, the literary activity of this Ecuadorian writer is not restricted exclusively to the novel as a genre, nor to the Indian as theme. Theater, short story and novel constitute …
