In April of 1718, Pierre Le Moyne , Sieur de Bienville, Commandant General of the French colony of Louisiana, founded the City of New Orleans. For the next half century this was to be in reality a French city, named for the Regent and with streets called Toulouse, Chartres, Dumaine, Bourbon, Dauphine, and Rue Royale laid out according to the proper French plan around the Place d'Armes. On Independence Day 1927, on the occa sion of the Swiss Singing Festival, a group of Swiss Americans living in the Chicago area decided to found a historical society. The idea had been in the air, so to speak. For some time , persons of different background and living in different parts of the country had been working diligently in that direction by encouraging existing Swis s societies to add another dimension to their activities and by gathering materials about "famous Swiss." The Ninth Annual Meeting of the reactivated Swiss American Historical Society was held on Saturday, December 30 , 1972, in New Orleans. The business meeting took place in the Rare Books Room of Tulane Library. Following the transaction of the business Mrs. Connie Griffith, Director of Special Collections, Tulane Library, showed the members present a few of her treasures from the collection of Swiss Consul Emil Hoehn. When in a symposium concerning the medical relations of Switzerland to other countries reports are given on the relations of Swiss medicine to German, French, Italian, English and Austrian medicine, the reasons are obvious. But it might be at first sight surprising that the USA are added to this traditional list of neighbors. This surprise is partly a consequence of outdated technological and geographical thought. Actually, through the airplane, New York is as close to Zurich as by railroad are Hamburg or Paris. We should become conscious of this new situation. But partly doubts remain legitimate. This year's annual meeting of the swiss American Historical Society will take place on Saturday, December 1, in New York. The SwissBenevolent Society of New York at 35 West 67th Street, New York, N.Y. will be available to us for this occasion. The business meeting is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. to be followed by a luncheon at 1 p.m. and an afternoon session to begin at 2:30 p.m. Members of our society are not only invited but urged to attend the meeting and to participate in our activities. Genealogical research in Switzerland is unique in many aspects because of several national characteristics. The physical terrain and political neutrality of Switzerland have virtually withstood the plagues of war which have ravaged the continent. Four offical languages - German, French, Italian, and Romansch - are spoken in many dialects by the Germanic and Latin peoples who are united through the Swiss Confederation. Caatholicism and the protestant Swiss Reformed Church are two predominant religions. Finally, and perhaps most important of all, Swiss rights of citzenship (Heimatberechtigung) are based on the medieval form jus sanguinis, the lineage of an individual.

Three Years in the Army of the Potomac is the title of Rudolf Aschmann's 1865 memoir of his lengthy service in the First U.S. Sharpshooter Regiment and it has been translated from the German for the first time in Heinz Meier's edition. Its appearance in English after so long a period of obscurity (Bruce Catton does not even list it in his bibliography for the Potomac trilogy) will not provoke any interpretative reassessment of the military history of the American Civil War; it does not even contribute data previously unknown. Only some 130 years ago Chicago, now a sprawling metropolis of the Midwest, began to grow from a small prairie seaport on lake Michigan into a thriving American city. Many Swiss immigrants followed the trail of the thousands of newcomers to the emerging town who either hailed from the Atlantic seaport states and from Midwestern rural communities or who had crossed the Atlantic to become settlers of the white man's New world. By 1870 the city counted some 298,977 inhabitants, at the same date some 1,435 Swiss had settled in Cook County, many of whom lived in Chicago.

Gelzer, Second Vice-President, organized a spring meeting which took place in the residence of Ambassador and Mrs. P. H. Aubaret, Saturday afternoon, May 13. the invitation was accepted by about sixty members and friends from the greater New York area who were attracted by the generous gesture of the Swiss Consul General, as well as by the timeliness of the program.
