Blair, Nebraska, located some twenty miles north of Omaha, is the home of Dana College and Trinity Seminary. Together, these companion institutions formed one of the focal points of Danish immigrant efforts to establish themselves in their new homeland and to preserve elements of their cultural heritage. In 1864, the United States government sent Colonel Kit Carson on a pillaging, murdering foray through Navaho country, what is now northern Arizona. Scot O'Dell tells the story in a charming and moving book for young adults entitled, Sing Down the Moon, winner of the Hans Christian Andersen medal for children's books in 1970. On June 18, 1983, more than forty persons from the United States and Switzerland met for the whole day at the Restaurant zur Aeusseren Enge in Bern. The friendly atmosphere of that cosy establishment in the homely style of the Swiss National Exhibition of 1914, which had taken place in its neighbourhood, was greatly enhanced by a good lunch. Sylva Brunner, a well-known member of the Swiss colony of New York, is the author of a book (written in German) which was published in September of this year by the Peter Meili Verlag in Schaffhausen, Switzerland. "Pionier für eine menschlichere Zukunft" is a documentary presentation of the life of Dr. med. Wilhelm Joos (1821-1900) who represented his native Schaffhausen in the Swiss National Council (Nationalrat) from 1863 to 1900, and who was one of the most colorful and controversial members of that body. Although not a recent publication, this rare and little known work deserves to be featured. Some time ago the Arthur H. Clark Company offered Number 18 of the 200 printed copies for sale; the little book is beautifully crafted, signed by the printer J. Wilson McKenney, and reproduces on the front cover a letter in facsimile that was written by Borel on Tuesday, April 24, 1906, right after the devastating earthquake. On my first trip West, from the corn plains of Illinois to California and back, Nebraska was the first state with a physiognomy really distinct from the green fields I had come to know. This edition of the religio-political writings of Johann Joachim Zublin (1724-1781) is a valuable and welcome addition to Swiss Americana. John J. Zubly, as he came to be known in the American colonies, had grown up in St. Gallen, Switzerland, where he studied for the ministry. Current Trends In The Planning And Development Of Northern European Collections, Richard Hacken
Faculty Publications
Current planning and development of collections in the social sciences and humanities for German-speaking Europe, the Netherlands, and Scandinavia reflect the changing needs of research, strict budgetary limits, the prevailing publishing market in those countries, and certain innovations in library automation. Librarians responsible for supporting an area study of Northern Europe may shape the trends to their advantage by careful policy planning, by informed financial choices, by the use of data bases and resource sharing, by privately-nurtured channels of acquisition and support and by a continuing self-education program that might include participation in the activities of the CES and WESS.

On April 1, 1892, a letter by Detlev Leerskov appeared in Kirkebladet, the church newspaper of the Danish Evangelical Lutheran Church Association in America, otherwise known to Danish immigrants as the Blair Church. Leerskov, who had emigrated from Denmark ten years earlier, married a Cherokee woman, and settled among the Cherokee in what was then Indian Territory, wrote to tell the readers of Kirkebladet how he had received a copy of their paper from his brother in Hutchinson, Minnesota, and that this had been "the first Christian reading in the Danish language" that he had seen in ten years.
