In a high valley of the Jura Mountains, La Chaux-de-Fonds, Canton of Neuchatel, is the center of watchmaking. It is the city where I was born, 19 May 1911. My passion for travel, geography, history, railroads, maps, is inherited. Among the family papers on my father's side I found a little yellow book titled "Expenses during the travel in Italy" and dated 1799. It contains the schedule of the stagecoaches between cities in Italy and among the expenses are purchases of one map of the Cisalpine Republic, another map and the History of Rome by the Latin historian Polybius. Recently a major contribution to the field of knowledge of California's diverse population was published in Switzerland by Dr. Maurice-Edmond Perret, with the title Les Colonies Tessinoises en Californie.¹ Unlike most studies of a similar nature, Perret had access to source materials in the Swiss archives as well as to those in California libraries.² But he went further: he conducted his study by means of actual field investigation both in Switzerland and in California, and it is this which gives his work particular interest to historical geographers.

The topic of my paper is involved and multifaceted. It deals with well-known organizations and names such as the Rote Kapelle, Dulles and the OSS, Schellenberg, and the Abwehr, but it concentrates on the role that Switzerland played in the field of intelligence during World War II. Due to the volume of materials on almost every aspect of my topic it will not be possible to present more than an overview of the main themes and a glimpse at the issues that have challenged historians over the last forty years.

Under this heading I would like to bring together two different emphases in the study of industrialization that too often have remained separate: (a) the historical measurement of economic growth, undertaken by economic historians who have looked at industrial output and similar indicators in order to gauge a country's economic performance; and (b) the study of social policy measures such as workers' protection and social insurance, to which social and political historians have paid major attention in assessing a nation's reaction to the ups and downs of economic growth in the course of industrialization.

Dana College, Blair, Nebraska, and Grand View College, Des Moines, Iowa, are the two surviving institutions of higher education founded by Danish immigrants in the United States. One part of a year-long celebration of Dana's centennial in 1984 was the publication of a new history of the college and its parent institution , Trinity Seminary. Entitled A Place Called Dana , the book was released October 5 during Dana 's Homecoming observance.

An Immigrant's Provisions For Mortality, Inga Wiehl

It is my experience that we avoid funerals because they remind us of our mortality for which provisions must be made. Our resistance has two causes: we dread - in accordance with the human tendency to resist change - the most profound change of all, from life to death, mortality itself. Secondly, we dislike having to provide for our own departure according to the custom of the country or the taste of the individual.

Greenland 1948-1985: From Reorganization To Home Rule And Beyond, Bent Thygesen

This article is not, strictly speaking, Danish American in content. However, Greenland has long been a concern of the United States. Secretary of State Seward who purchased Alaska from the Russians in 1867 gave some serious thought to the acquisition of Greenland also. Since the early days of World War 11, United States troops have been stationed in Greenland as part of our strategic defense system. The Danish American Heritage Society has always taken a broad view of what is Danish American, and we believe this article fits into that broad view.

When European emigration to the United States surged anew after the Civil War, American Protestants of several denominations extended both spiritual and economic assistance to those newcomers who, in their perception, most closely shared their own religious traditions. Scandinavian immigrants, nearly all of whom were at least nominally Protestant, naturally received a generous portion of this aid, much of which came in the form of ministerial education. Young men who looked forward to careers as Lutheran pastors had access to ethnic theological colleges anchored in that tradition if not always in their respective national heritages.
