Translator’s Note: For most readers outside of Denmark, the Danish Golden Age begins and ends with Hans Christian Andersen and Søren Kierkegaard. At the time, however, both Andersen and Kierkegaard were outsiders in respect to the dominant cultural circle, that of the actress Johanne Luise Heiberg, her husband Johan Ludvig Heiberg, and his mother Thomasine Gyllembourg. Gyllembourg, along with Steen Steensen Blicher and Bernhard Severin Ingemann, is credited with giving Denmark its first canonical prose fiction. Despite her importance to Danish Golden Age literature and the history of European women’s literature, Gyllembourg is virtually unknown outside of Denmark, except among …

Trying To Disappear: One Translator Among Many Authors, Michael Favala Goldman

The Bridge

A literary translator ought, as much as possible, take on the voice of the author, or the author’s characters, in much the same way an actor takes on a role in a play. The goal is that the reader forget that the words they are reading have been translated at all. The new work needs to stand on its own as a legitimate work of literature, hopefully bearing successfully the unspoken attitudes and inferences of the original author, but in the new language. The artifice involved ought to be invisible.

It was in the early 1990's that I first met Bob. He was teaching, first as a Soros Foundation Fellow and then as a Fullbright Professor at the Lajos Kossuth University in Debrecen, a city in eastern Hungary. It was only a couple of years after the Fall of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of Communism. This was a time when it had finally become possible for Hungarians to travel freely in the world, but in practice very few of us were able to afford to do so.

academic appointment despite his productive research and publication,

and why, after two to three years at an institution, he was again on the

move. He seemed to be changing from position to position in the United

States as well as abroad.

Women have better sex under socialism claims title of Kristen Ghodsee’s recent book (2018) that highlights female economic independence as a main factor leading to greater freedom and thus more sexual pleasure for women in “socialist paradise”. This critical approach opens up new perspectives and frameworks to re-consider socialist advantages that benefit women, and it also invites further discussion of the thought-provoking premise of “female comfort and pleasure” in various socio-cultural and socio-economic orders. A mere three months after the peaceful Velvet Revolution in Czechoslovakia, and less than a year after his last imprisonment under the communist regime, playwright-turned-president Václav Havel stood before a joint session of U.S. Congress in February of 1990. In his address, Havel marked, for his American audience, the new freedoms being established at home. More than just a victory lap, however, Havel’s visit articulated the importance of the invention of post-communism, as the end of the Cold War had to be constructed for his global audience. Sixteenth-century French philosopher Michel de Montaigne was one of the first writers to reflect on embodiment. “I am myself the matter of my book,” he proclaims in the introduction to his Essays. Montaigne writes about various moments of embodied transitions: a near-death experience, reflections on aging and cognitive decline, and a lengthy discussion of how to cope in the face of devastating loss. Taking an interdisciplinary perspective by analyzing the relationship between embodiment, health representations, and geropsychological themes, this chapter analyzes Montaigne’s in-between moments, arguing that Montaigne’s essays—innovative in their own time—remain important in discussing embodied transitions today.

Identified by European research as an aging crisis, vulnerabilities in the rural Bulgarian elderly population such as intergenerational caregiver loss, are sociohistorical consequences and barriers to successful aging. This transcultural study investigated the aging crisis in rural Bulgaria to create a contextual definition of successful aging and to address successful aging and the identification of challenges and barriers faced by social workers and elders to support successful aging. This article pays attention to the mobilizing potential of certain poetic productions in the context of the 2008 Spanish financial crisis. From the perspective of Affect and Emotion studies, I use Jonathan Flatley’s notion of affective cartography to illustrate how Antonio Orihuela and Pablo García Casado’s poems extrapolate from personal dimensions of the financial crisis’ drama (unemployment, evictions, etc.) to the socio-political sphere. I argue that, in such context, the poems studied possess the potentiality of arousing an empowering empathy and indignation in a historically-situated reader.

Where do modern retellings of classic fairytales stick to their source texts and where do they differ? Inspired by ABC’s fairytale drama Once Upon a Time, my reimagining project was born. I originally became obsessed with Hans Christian Andersen’s Snow Queen character both through this television series and through the character’s titular story, and after that, grew to love many of his tales from the nineteenth century. This article considers student resistance to course content that challenged the dominant narrative of Scandinavian heritage on the Northern Plains. The course viewed the Scandinavian-American immigration to the Upper Midwest through the lens of literary giants such as Drude Krog Jansen, Vilhelm Moberg, and Ole Edvart Rølvaag, but the course also questioned the relative scholarly silence devoted to encounters between Scandinavian Americans and Native Americans during periods of land-taking, settlement, and conflict, including the U.S.–Dakota War. Nonfiction books by Jon Gjerde and Carlton C. Qualey, Karen V. Hansen, and Karl Jakob Skarstein, among others, complicate and inform the realities of …
