Phantastes Chapter 12: A Threefold Cord, Unknown Dec 1882

Phantastes Chapter 12: A Threefold Cord, Unknown

German Romantic and Other Influences

This poem appears in MacDonald’s A Threefold Cord (1883), where MacDonald is credited as contributor and editor. In this volume, individual authors are not credited. While some have thought that this passage is by MacDonald himself, Nick Page persuasively argues that the poem should be attributed to MacDonald’s friend Greville Ewing Matheson. See Page, Phantastes: Special Annotated Edition (Paternoster, 2008)

"George Eliot" Highgate Cemetery, Edwin J. Milliken

The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375

LARGE woman soul, sure of unfading bays,

It little boots o'er thy too early tomb

To puff our little breaths of passing praise -

Dead in the deepest of Midwinter's gloom,

Ere thine own Autumn's mellow fruitage failed!

We mourn a Larger Light, eclipsed too soon

By the all-darkening Shadow; we who hailed

Its rise, its rounding to the plenilune

Of finished force and chastened grace, lament

The passing of a Power.Thou perchance

Bearest it all unstained, as still unspent,

To spheres unclogged by earthy circumstance.

So be it! Not among the tricksy mimes

Who glitter out a glowworm's hour …

The Diary Of Lady Lindsay

The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375

Priory, my first since the death of Mr. Lewes. I found everything but little changed; the hostess, looking paler and more worn, perhaps, and wearing a black and white cap, received me in her accustomed corner; the room was the same, a few visitors sat in the old places; I missed George Lewes and his cheery voice. Mr. Tennyson came in; I had never made his acquaintance before; I had a long talk with him, which pleased me much. He was full of the fact that Ruskin abused him for saying that a crushed daisy blushes red, i.e. that it …

The Mysteries Of A London Convent [Transcript], William H. Hillyard Dec 1865

The Mysteries Of A London Convent [Transcript], William H. Hillyard

Gothic Archive Chapbooks

Published in The London Miscellany and written by William Heard Hillyard (1811-1870), this 22 chapter story must have been considered a guaranteed blockbuster with the newspaper’s intended reading audience.

The Mysteries of a London Convent relies most immediately on the sensational categories that we saw delineated in The Mysteries of the Inquisition, as well as another and earlier penny dreadful production with an almost identical plot, Smiff’s The New Mysteries of London (1858), written in imitation of Reynolds’s blockbuster The Mysteries of London (1844-48).
