The Authenticity Of Benson's Historical Novels, Estelle T. Bell Jan 1931

The Authenticity Of Benson's Historical Novels, Estelle T. Bell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the historical accuracy of Robert Hugh Benson's historical novels "The King's Achievement," "Come Rack! Come Rope!," and "By What Authority," arguing that despite their fictional romantic elements, these novels authentically portray the historical relationship between the English and Catholic Churches during the reigns of Henry VIII and Elizabeth I. Bell opens by distinguishing the aims of the historian from those of the novelist, then situates Benson biographically as a convert from Anglicanism to Catholicism whose religious sensibility shaped his literary work.

Drawing on the "Lingard-Belloc History of England" as an authoritative historical source, the thesis traces the …

The Works Of George Sand As An Interpretation Of Her Life And Personality, Bernita Salmon Jan 1931

The Works Of George Sand As An Interpretation Of Her Life And Personality, Bernita Salmon

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Although there is some difference of opinion today concerning George Sand's position in French literature, it is a definite fact that she was an important literary figure during her lifetime. By important, I do not necessarily mean that she was always popular, for she received a great deal of unfavorable criticism; but her name was famous name, her works were generally the talked-of books, and her influence was feared. "George Sand" attached to a new publication brought immediate interest and heated discussion. Commercial men capitalized on this fact, for we are told that a certain in Rafin named a new …

Sixty Literary Years: The Foundation Of The George Eliot Fellowship, Kathleen Adams Nov 1930

Sixty Literary Years: The Foundation Of The George Eliot Fellowship, Kathleen Adams

The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375

When the George Eliot Fellowship was born sixty years ago, the infant had emerged after a labour of some 25 years. A.F. Cross, its founder, had been editor of Nuneaton newspapers since 1895. For much of that time he had been campaigning for a memorial to George Eliot in her native town, but had met with apathy at every turn. For two weeks during the summer of 1930, Mr. Cross handed over the Editorial chair of the Nuneaton Chronicle to a Cambridge undergraduate, to give the young man an opportunity to gain an inside knowledge of newspaper production. His young …

Shakespere's Histories As A Dramatic Pageant Of The Middle Ages, Janice M. Wolf Jun 1930

Shakespere's Histories As A Dramatic Pageant Of The Middle Ages, Janice M. Wolf

Bachelors’ Theses

"When Shakespeare, Jonson, Fletcher, ruled the stage, They took so bold a freedom with the age, That there was scarce a knave or fool in town Of any note but had his picture down." But William Shakespeare has gone farther than this and has woven into his Histories a beautiful story. A story, or rather a colorful pageant that carries us back several centuries to the time when William Shakespeare lived and Queen Elizabeth ruled England. Between lines he gives us a beautiful picture of merry England and her people. He reveals the customs, beliefs, and ideas of his age …

A Study Of Shakespere's Dramatic Technique Through His Comedies, Dorothy Tolford Apr 1930

A Study Of Shakespere's Dramatic Technique Through His Comedies, Dorothy Tolford

Bachelors’ Theses

The dramatic technique of any author, if it is to be studied for its growth and development and increase of skill, is best and most clearly seen when his works are put in chronological order and then compared one with the other. In each play or novel, the acquisition of some new dexterity or aptitude, which makes it an Improvement over the preceding work, is evident. It is not enough to look simply for the general effect of the play; the growth of technique is seen only in a thorough study of the mechanics of the play.

Social And Political Ideas Of The Poet Percy Bysshe Shelley, John H. Boman Apr 1930

Social And Political Ideas Of The Poet Percy Bysshe Shelley, John H. Boman

Bachelors’ Theses

An attempt has been made to weave a web containing the ideas, both social and political, of Percy Bysshe Shelley. web will glisten in the sun, and a web made of the social and political ideas of Shelley will always glisten, because Shelley will never die.

We will attempt to understand the sources of his radical tendencies, and then in turn study his social and political ideas. Some have called Shelley insane, and some have called him a prudent thinker. How true these are we will see as we weave the story of his social and political ideas.

Shakespeare's Genius Was Essentially A Dramatic One, Marie Valentine Prudeaux Jul 1929

Shakespeare's Genius Was Essentially A Dramatic One, Marie Valentine Prudeaux

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis, submitted to Xavier University in 1929, argues that Shakespeare's genius was essentially a dramatic one, examining his life, artistic development, and dramatic works across four periods of composition. A biographical account of Shakespeare's life at Stratford-on-Avon and London opens the study, followed by an analysis of the qualities that distinguish his genius, including originality, insight into character, and the power to portray emotion.

Prudeaux draws on the critical tradition of Dryden, Hazlitt, Johnson, Pope, and Schlegel, among others, to organize Shakespeare's dramatic output into four periods, characterized in the thesis as "In the Workshop," "In the World," "Out …

The Universality Of Shakespeare, Cecilia Fessler Nuss Jun 1929

The Universality Of Shakespeare, Cecilia Fessler Nuss

Bachelors’ Theses

In this essay it is my purpose to examine and analyze the life and works of Shakespeare to find whether or not he is Universal. Of course, it will be impossible in a work of this kind to consider all the author's works, but I shall look for particular passages, scenes, and characters, and from these to observe whether the alleged statement, that Shakespeare's powers are all-reaching and all-pervading, is actually true.

The Function Of The Comedians In Shakespeare's Plays, Louise Elizabeth Tennessen Jun 1928

The Function Of The Comedians In Shakespeare's Plays, Louise Elizabeth Tennessen

Bachelors’ Theses

There is an old adage, "It takes a wise man to make a fool", which is familiar to most of us, but the full significance of the proverb will be comprehended only after reviewing several plays in which the fools carry prominent parts. Tracing the history of the court fool back to the early and middle ages, it has been found that it was customary tor a monarch, prince or a powerful noble to have in his retinue a fool or jester, whose office it was to entertain his master and courtiers. He enjoyed privileges and liberties denied the higher …

The Influence Of Seneca On The Elizabethan Tragedy, James Aloysius Bielefeld Jun 1928

The Influence Of Seneca On The Elizabethan Tragedy, James Aloysius Bielefeld

Bachelors’ Theses

In the world of letters it was the fortune of Seneca like that of Banquo to beget a posterity greater than himself. Seneca is really more philosopher than dramatist, and his "Tenne Tragedies" are mainly unactable closet-dramas. It seems unlikely that they were ever produced at Rome beyond being declamed before some select reading circle gathered by personal invitation. How the Elizabethans turned to Seneca rather than to Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides, the giants of the Periclean age, is a problem we may take up later, but that Elizabethan tragedy is deeply indebted to Seneca will be made clear by …

Shakespeare's Delineation Of Criminal Characters, Herbert Lloyd Hinstorff Jun 1928

Shakespeare's Delineation Of Criminal Characters, Herbert Lloyd Hinstorff

Bachelors’ Theses

We like what we are not, or we are not what we think we are. In no subject is this truism more evident than in the literature of a people. Literature reflects the taste of the time rather than the time itself, and of ten the two are widely different. Literature is, of course, not life, neither history nor material for history, but a scroll whereon are traced and charactered the unfettered thoughts of writer and reader, - a life within a life, fancy somewhat at odds with fact. fut by critics and historians this is often forgotten - "To …

The Song In Elizabethan Drama With Particular Reference To Its Function In Shakespeare, John Joseph Plamondon Jun 1927

The Song In Elizabethan Drama With Particular Reference To Its Function In Shakespeare, John Joseph Plamondon

Master's Essays (1922 - )

We have approached our study of the song in Elizabethan Drama with the intention of accounting for the abundance of vocal music in the plays of Shakespeare and his contemporaries, and of explaining the use of song as a dramatic device. It has been considered necessary to a proper understanding of the place of song in the Romantic Drama to give a rather broad treatment of the subject, including a brief history of the song in the English theatre, the psychology of its origin, and the cause of its decline. Methods of presenting songs have been discussed to strengthen our …

English Religious Poetry Of The Nineteenth Century As Influenced By The Catholic Spirit, Mary Mida Jun 1926

English Religious Poetry Of The Nineteenth Century As Influenced By The Catholic Spirit, Mary Mida

Master's Theses

Since we are now entering upon the second quarter of the twentieth century, it follows that the perspective thus offered gives ample scope for an authoritative report on the literary output of the preceding century, in the special field chosen - English Religious Poetry. The older English poets wrote from an established point of view, that is, their human creed and their idea of man coincided, while the modern English poets voice the protest or the defense of those who have little in common save the genius of the Bard. This has led to a certain recklessness in the matter …

On Certain New Elucidations Of Shakespeare, L. A. Shermnan Jul 1919

On Certain New Elucidations Of Shakespeare, L. A. Shermnan

University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)

Notes on Shakespeare's Workmanship. By Sir Arthur QuiIler-Couch, M. A. New York: Henry Holt and Company .

The title of Quiller-Couch's recent volume,l would seem to promise a fresh discussion of the dramaturgic method and excellencies of this author. No promise or prospect could have been more welcome. The technic of organizing a play is a matter of no slight concern. All the dramatic world is waiting for some satisfying if not final word.. There are critics and scholars who affirm that there is no such thing as dramatic construction. They would even add that there are no princiJ>les …

On The Comparison Of Adverbs In English In The Fourteenth Century, Alma Hosic Jul 1906

On The Comparison Of Adverbs In English In The Fourteenth Century, Alma Hosic

University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)

The following investigation deals with the comparison of adverbs in English in the fourteenth century. This century seems especially important in the history of adverb comparison, since it represents the close of the dialectal period and the beginning of the transition period from Middle to Modern English. A chief purpose has been to connect the adverbial forms of the fourteenth century with those of the preceding and following centuries.

Examples are very full but not exhaustive. The majority of the important literary monuments of the century have been examined. The examples, however, are fuller for the Northern and Midland than …

On The Substantivation Of Adjectives In Chaucer, Arthur Garfield Kennedy Jul 1905

On The Substantivation Of Adjectives In Chaucer, Arthur Garfield Kennedy

University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)

The substantivation of adjectives in English has, like most other processes of our language, been so gradual that it is difficult to fix the beginning of it in the case of any particular word or group of words, or at anyone time to measure accurately its progress. Perhaps the most satisfactory results are obtained by . comparing the data made up from the writings of authors of different periods. This investigation is offered as a study of the process of .substantivation of adjectives in the fourteenth century, as shown in the writings of Chaucer. Kellner names three ways in which …
