The Gothic Presence Of Poland In Nineteenth-Century American Literature, Jill Noel Walker Gonzalez Feb 2016

The Gothic Presence Of Poland In Nineteenth-Century American Literature, Jill Noel Walker Gonzalez

English Language and Literature ETDs

The references to Poland in United States print culture indicate that Poland is a significant presence in the nineteenth-century literary imagination. Though often idealized, Poland emerges as a gothic presence registering anxieties about culture, imperialism, slavery, the Other, economic ruin, and identity. Using Roland Barthes theory of cultural code, this dissertation looks to nineteenth-century United States newspapers to consider American readers' cultural knowledge about Poland. The coded history of revolution beneath each reference to Poland indicates that Polish revolution is the mechanism that reveals American anxieties about instability, imperialism, class inequalities, and violence—all of which put pressure on America's mythic …

A Mormon Theology Of Immigration: Liberation Theology In The Restored Church Of Christ, Jenna Carson, Jason Kerr Feb 2016

A Mormon Theology Of Immigration: Liberation Theology In The Restored Church Of Christ, Jenna Carson, Jason Kerr

Journal of Undergraduate Research

I wrote an academic paper arguing that Latter-day Saint doctrine, especially the Law of Consecration, provides the foundation for a specific theology of liberation that can be placed in conversation with traditional liberation theology put forth by Gustavo Gutierrez. I then put the theology to work by presenting the contemporary Mexico-U.S. immigration phenomenon as a case study. I argued that liberation theology helps members of the Church better understand current LDS Church policy regarding the treatment of individuals living without documentation in the United States.

Using Reading Strategies To Teach Students Close Reading, Colleen Mcquay, Dawan Coombs Feb 2016

Using Reading Strategies To Teach Students Close Reading, Colleen Mcquay, Dawan Coombs

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The Common Core State Standards call for students to be better able to comprehend and close read literature when it states that students will be able to “read closely to determine what the text says explicitly and to make logical inferences from it.”1 However, even though this is what the standards are calling for, the concern is how educators can better teach and aid students in gaining skills that will contribute to increased close reading and comprehension. While research upholds the importance of these skills for academic and career success,2 it lacks in discussing the implementation of strategies …

Wandering In Contemporary Literature: A Narrative Theory Of Cognition, Hillel E. Broder Feb 2016

Wandering In Contemporary Literature: A Narrative Theory Of Cognition, Hillel E. Broder

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This study offers a theory of wandering cognition as an animating feature of western literature, in general, and of contemporary literature, in particular. Unlike existing theories of peripatetic bodies and minds in fiction that focus primarily on political critiques, cultural practices, or pleasures of digression, this theory of wandering offers an aesthetic philosophy and ethical critique of representing cognition, memory, and narrative identity that finds affinities in the political, phenomenological, and ethical thought of Walter Benjamin, Emmanuel Levinas, and Giorgio Agamben.

Unlike existing cognitive theories of literature that apply cognitive theory to literary study (or vice versa), this study develops …

City Poems And Urban Crisis, 1945 - Present, Jeffrey Nathan Mickelson Feb 2016

City Poems And Urban Crisis, 1945 - Present, Jeffrey Nathan Mickelson

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

City Poems proposes that twentieth-century American city poets hold important concerns, commitments, and strategies in common with urban theorists and city planners. The study situates canonical and lesser-read city poetry, including work by William Carlos Williams, Charles Olson, Allen Ginsberg, George Oppen, Gwendolyn Brooks, and Wanda Coleman, among others, in relation to discourses of urban crisis. Following Raymond Williams, Henri Lefebvre, and James Scully, it approaches city poetry as a form of social action that holds particular value for practitioners of progressive city planning. Because poetic representations of cities influence public perceptions, City Poems suggests, they have the potential to …

Review Of: James Shapiro, 1606: William Shakespeare And The Year Of Lear, Emily Soon Feb 2016

Review Of: James Shapiro, 1606: William Shakespeare And The Year Of Lear, Emily Soon

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

‘For the Jacobean Shakespeare’, James Shapiro tells us, ‘no year’s output would be more extraordinary than that of 1606’. Between King James’s ascension to the English throne in 1603 and the Gunpowder Plot of late 1605, Shakespeare had penned a paltry two plays, making the speed with which he churned out three great tragedies – King Lear, Macbeth and Antony and Cleopatra – in 1606 even more impressive. After this year, Shakespeare would have two more creative periods before his death a decade later, but no single year would ever be as imaginatively fruitful again. In 1606: William Shakespeare and …

The Role Of Sequence In The Experience Of Mathematical Beauty, Leslie Dietiker Jan 2016

The Role Of Sequence In The Experience Of Mathematical Beauty, Leslie Dietiker

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

In this article, I analyze the aesthetic dimensions of a sequence of mathematical events found in an unusual first grade lesson in order to demonstrate how sequencing may affect an individual’s experience of mathematical beauty. By approaching aesthetic as a sense or felt quality of an experience in context (Sinclair, 2001, 2011), this analysis explains how sequence can affect the way mathematical objects or actions are experienced by an individual. Thus, rather than questioning whether or in what ways a set of mathematical objects are beautiful or not, this paper addresses under what conditions is the mathematics in play beautiful. …

Barbara D’Austria: Women And Religious Upheaval In 16th-Century Europe, Victoria Fox, Brandie Siegfried Jan 2016

Barbara D’Austria: Women And Religious Upheaval In 16th-Century Europe, Victoria Fox, Brandie Siegfried

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The purpose of this project was to recover source documents regarding the life of a significant 16th-century woman who has been otherwise largely left out of history. Barbara d’Austria, daughter of Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand I and Anna of Bohemia and Hungary, was an intensely religious and ambitious woman who was said to have used her own funds to provide shelter for women who had been displaced by an earthquake. But other than this general knowledge, and a few poems written at her marriage celebration by Torquato Tasso, little else has been developed regarding her life and influence. After scouring …

An Uninformed Pilgrim, Lillian Fassero Jan 2016

An Uninformed Pilgrim, Lillian Fassero

Aidenn: The Liberty Undergraduate Journal of American Literature

Joseph C. Pattison’s article, “The Celestial City, or Dream Tale,” examines Nathaniel Hawthorne’s “The Celestial Railroad” and portrays the narrator as a Christian hero standing against the modernist persuasions of his time – a protagonist who enters the story with firm orthodox convictions and exits his dream journey with unaltered principles or character. However, Hawthorne’s narrator frequently adopts new modernist arguments and wavers in his pre-formed convictions. He toys with Christian faith but promptly discards any accusations of guilt that such beliefs suggest. While he repeatedly compromises his principles and doubts the ramifications of Christian faith, his dynamic nature is …

Analyzing True Self-Reliance And Individualism, Stephanie Greene Jan 2016

Analyzing True Self-Reliance And Individualism, Stephanie Greene

Aidenn: The Liberty Undergraduate Journal of American Literature

This essay analyzes the story of “Rip Van Winkle” by Washington Irving and criticizes Daniel Plung’s assessment of it in his article, “Rip Van Winkle’: Metempsychosis and the Quest for Self-Reliance.” In Plung’s article, he assesses that in the story of “Rip Van Winkle,” the main character, Rip, attains self-reliance and individualism through his escape and experience on the mountain. However, although Plung’s points support his assessments, there are also many other details in the story that contradict Plung’s analysis. This essay seeks to enlighten readers to a differing interpretation of “Rip Van Winkle” by studying other details in the …
