This research study investigated the stress patterns and metalinguistic knowledge of Thai learners on the pronunciation of English derivational suffixed words. The study compared how the learners performed before and after the praxis intervention, where the stress placement rules of English suffixed words were explicitly taught and trained. Thirty first-year university students were selected by stratified random sampling based on their proficiency levels and were grouped into the high and low proficiency groups. They took the pre-test which was the read aloud task of the base and the suffixed words. Their performance was recorded, and the stress patterns were analysed. …

Addressing this gap, I interrogate the discursive construction of Bangkok sex tourism spaces focusing on Silom areas, Cowboy alley, Nana Plaza. This research investigated avoidance behaviour as one of the strategies L2 learners may resort to because of L1-L2 differences, or the non-existence of L2 structures for L1 learners (Schachter 1974; Dagut and Laufer 1985). Schachter (1974) proposed the Avoidance Behaviour Hypothesis, whereby L2 learners were likely to avoid using some L2 structures due to the aforementioned difficulties in L2 acquisition. Later researchers, i.e. Dagut and Laufer (1985), and Laufer and Eliasson (1993), claimed that L1-L2 differences tended to play a role, or at least would be the 'best predictor' (1993, p46) of avoidance. การวิจัยครั้งนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาประสิทธิผลของการสอนอ่านแบบแลกเปลี่ยนบทบาทในการพัฒนาทักษะการอ่านภาษาสเปนของนักเรียนชั้นมัธยมศึกษาปีที่ 5 โรงเรียนเตรียมอุดมศึกษา แผนการเรียนภาษา-สเปน และเพื่อพัฒนาแผนการจัดการเรียนรู้ด้านการสอนอ่านตามแนวคิดการสอนแบบแลกเปลี่ยนบทบาทระหว่างครูกับนักเรียน กลุ่มตัวอย่างในการวิจัยครั้งนี้เป็นนักเรียนแผนการเรียนภาษา-สเปน ระดับชั้นมัธยมศึกษา ปีที่ 5 โรงเรียนเตรียมอุดมศึกษา เป็นการสุ่มประชากรตัวอย่างแบบเจาะจง เนื่องจากการจัดการเรียนการสอนภาษาสเปนในโรงเรียนเตรียมอุดมศึกษา จัดให้มีแผนการเรียนภาษา-สเปนเพียง 1 ห้องต่อปีการศึกษา ทำให้ไม่สามารถแบ่งกลุ่มผู้เรียนออกเป็นกลุ่มควบคุมและกลุ่มทดลองเพื่อทำการศึกษาในปีการศึกษาเดียวกันได้ จึงต้องใช้นักเรียนกลุ่มที่ต่างกันด้วยปีการศึกษา กล่าวคือ 1) กลุ่มควบคุม คือ นักเรียนระดับชั้นมัธยมศึกษาปีที่ 5 ภาคเรียนที่ 2 ปีการศึกษา 2561 จำนวน 17 คน ได้รับการสอนตามแผนการจัดการเรียนรู้แบบดั้งเดิม รายวิชา ป30204 ภาษาสเปน 4 กลุ่มสาระการเรียนรู้ภาษาต่างประเทศที่ 2 โรงเรียนเตรียมอุดมศึกษา และ 2) กลุ่มทดลอง คือ นักเรียนระดับชั้นมัธยมศึกษาปีที่ 5 ภาคเรียนที่ 2 ปีการศึกษา 2562 จำนวน 24 คน ได้รับการสอนตามแผน การจัดการเรียนรู้ด้านการสอนอ่านแบบแลกเปลี่ยนบทบาทระหว่างครูกับนักเรียน เครื่องมือที่ใช้ในการวิจัยครั้งนี้ได้แก่ แผนการจัดการเรียนรู้ด้านการสอนอ่านแบบแลกเปลี่ยนบทบาทระหว่างครูกับนักเรียน แบบทดสอบวัดความสามารถด้านการอ่านภาษาสเปนเพื่อความเข้าใจ แบบประเมินตนเองด้านการอ่านภาษาสเปนเพื่อความเข้าใจของนักเรียน และแบบสังเกตพฤติกรรมด้านการอ่านเพื่อความเข้าใจของนักเรียนโดยครูเป็นผู้สังเกต สถิติที่ใช้ในการวิเคราะห์ข้อมูล ได้แก่ ค่าเฉลี่ย ส่วนเบี่ยงเบนมาตรฐาน และค่า t-test ผลการวิจัยจากการศึกษาประสิทธิผลของการสอนอ่านแบบแลกเปลี่ยนบทบาทระหว่างครูกับนักเรียนในการพัฒนาทักษะการอ่านภาษาสเปน พบว่านักเรียนที่ได้รับการสอนตามแผนการจัดการเรียนรู้ด้านการสอนอ่านแบบแลกเปลี่ยนบทบาทระหว่างครูกับนักเรียนมีคะแนนเฉลี่ยความสามารถด้านการอ่านภาษาสเปนเพื่อความเข้าใจหลังการทดลองสูงกว่าก่อนการทดลองอย่างมีนัยสำคัญทางสถิติที่ .05 ซึ่งสูงกว่าคะแนนเฉลี่ยหลังการทดลองของกลุ่มควบคุม จึงสรุปได้ว่า การสอนอ่านภาษาสเปนเพื่อความเข้าใจโดยใช้แผนการจัดการเรียนรู้ด้านการสอนอ่านแบบแลกเปลี่ยนบทบาทระหว่างครูกับนักเรียนมีประสิทธิผลคือ ทำให้ทักษะการอ่านภาษาสเปนเพื่อความเข้าใจของนักเรียนสูงขึ้น

Corpus linguistic research has consistently shown that there is an interconnectedness between patterns and meanings in language use (Hunston and Francis, 2000; Römer, 2006). With regard to the present perfect, little attention has been paid to the relationship between verb patterns and meanings expressed through the tense. Many critics have suggested that most of the non-human characters in late-Victorian British science-fiction novels reflect social alienation and the cultural fear of physical, mental and moral degeneration. However, by relying on the concept of critical posthumanism in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries that attempts to debunk anthropocentrism and emphasise the significance of non-human otherness, this thesis studies representations of the body in three British science-fiction novels: Edward Bulwer-Lytton's The Coming Race (1871), H.G. This chapter examines eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century visions of apocalypse regarding the future of black lives in the American body politic. It begins with readings of Jefferson’s fear of a black planet in Notes on the State of Virginia and Crèvecoeur’s depictions of racial terror in Letters from an American Farmer. The chapter then investigates the writing of an African American herald of the end times, Christopher MacPherson. The chapter reads the apocalyptic jeremiad of MacPherson’s pamphlet, Christ’s Millennium (1811), as a reparative response to the suppression of black voices and the annihilation of black lives.

This dissertation examines literary estrangement, that is the act and effect of making the familiar strange in a literary work, in the religious poems and sermons of the poet-preacher John Donne (1572–1631). My study uncovers and explores what Donne "estranges," how he achieves this, and for what purpose, as well as the practices and modes of thinking that shaped his poetics. In Donne's religious verse and prose, making the familiar and traditional tropes, images, doctrines, and events of Christianity strange forms active readers and revitalizes those elements, imbuing them with newfound interest, significance, and affective power.

In spite of the substantial amount of critical work that has been produced on the recovery of early African American literature in the last few decades, our representations of black authors are still limited. Current studies of early African American poets privilege the identification of African American literature with resistance to slavery. This identification has persisted and has made the field one-dimensional. My dissertation provides reception histories of four early black poets—Phillis Wheatley, George Moses Horton, Frances Harper, and Paul Laurence Dunbar—to argue for and present an expansive understanding of African American literature. In A Son of the Forest (1829) and The Autobiography of Malcolm X (1965), the narrators describe their most formative experiences in relation to addiction and their respective religions. Though these narratives emerged at different periods (almost a century apart) in North American history, there are considerable similarities between them. As William Apess describes his struggle with alcoholism, he also appropriates both the language of popular literature and print culture in the Methodist movement, and in turn criticizes the white supremacist ideals ingrained in early American culture. J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth has been dissected and researched by philologists, medievalists, and literary theorists for decades. Though his work with languages (both historical and invented) has garnered attention over the past few decades, few scholars have looked at his languages in terms of their rhetorical functions within the narrative (as history), with the narrative (as artifacts), and without (as cultural participation). This essay argues that the successful political careers of certain populist leaders rhetorically enact what scholars have long recognized in art, literature, and entertainment as the grotesque. The grotesque provides a theoretically rich means for describing the vulgar and chaotic public behaviors that take strong hold among anti-elite audiences at certain points in history. Representing large-scale historical traumatic events can be problematic as accounts are often subjective and biased. It is difficult to determine if the subjective historical account is factually accurate or not. When discussing the Holocaust, representation is an important factor. How is the Holocaust represented? This paper shows how literature can fill in the gaps of historical representation. I focus on psychoanalyst Dori Laub’s three levels of the witness and their role in testimony in relation to Holocaust literature. My thesis argues that Edmund Spenser uses radically different representations of Ancient Egypt to explore complex ideas about gender roles in the Faerie Queene. Book III emphasizes the negative view of Egypt perpetuated through the Book of Exodus and Greek understanding of the mythological king Busiris. Book V emphasizes the positive view of Egypt through the many benevolent myths surrounding the goddess Isis. Spenser uses images of good and evil Egypt to discuss the abolition of normative gender roles.

Walter Scott's reinvention in Ivanhoe (1819) of Robin Hood as an Anglo-Saxon freedom fihghter had a lasting impact on later portrayal's of the outlaw. Thomas Miller's novel Royston Gower (1838) reworks Scott's idea of racial conflict between Saxons and Normans to cast Robin Hood as a Saxon freedom fighter to serve the Chartist cause.
