This project asks how and why certain works have received the label of “literature” while others have not. The project begins in Chapter 1 by examining seven glossaries of literary terms to define literature by means of understanding its parts, by which I mean the classes that literature has been divided into (e.g., genres). The overall finding of this chapter is that, while the glossarists seem to converge in their definitions of some terms, they greatly diverge in defining others. This divergence creates a problem in defining literature as a whole, because glossarists do not even reach a consensus in …

This study integrates the literature and correspondence of such Inklings authors as C. S. Lewis and J. R. R. Tolkien into the arc of Commonwealth utopian and dystopian literature of the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Because utopian authors such as Samuel Butler, William Morris, and H. G. Wells employ the utopian form pioneered by Thomas More but largely abandon More’s Augustinian Catholic view of human nature, their works frequently fail to address the impediments to justice and equity that More satirically addresses in Utopia. This thesis provides an analysis of Jordan Peele’s films, Get Out (2017) and Us (2019). The thesis contextualizes Get Out and Us as part of a protracted cultural conversation regarding monstrous images of the cinematic black body that began with Hollywood’s early monster films and continued into the culturally subversive era of blaxploitation horror films. While blaxploitation cinema reclaimed images of the racial Other that had been represented in the early creature feature subgenre, no such notable movement has subverted the more recent body horror subgenre. Jordan Peele’s Get Out and Us shift this subgenre toward racially inverted body horror. …

A high percentage of U.S. employees do not engage in their work, resulting in lower productivity. U.S. corporations are losing more than $400–$500 billion per year because of low productivity at work. This phenomenological study involved an examination of leadership behaviors that engage or disengage employees in public service organizations. This thesis focuses on the relationship between the individual and the nation in Tash Aw’s Map of the Invisible Worldand Salman Rushdie’s Midnight’s Children. Incorporated Benedict Anderson’s theory of “imagined communities” into the reading of both of the novels, this thesis discusses the limitation of nationalism and the imagination of individuals, aiming to show that it is the diversity of a nation that turns the stagnant imagined communities into fluid imagining communities.

Utopian Discourse In Contemporary Speculative Fiction, Casey Alan Jergenson

I argue in this dissertation that utopianism is a vibrant form of cultural production in the post-Cold War period, despite the paucity of recent texts depicting €œgood€ societies. Most literary historical accounts of the genre place the decline of the utopian narrative in the early twentieth century, with a brief resurgence in the 1960s and 1970s. Contemporary culture has since become inundated with dystopian and post-apocalyptic visions of the future. If we take this generic distribution at face-value, it seems symptomatic of the utopian idea's retreat from cultural production since the 1980s. This dissertation explores how representations of violence do dramaturgical work in theatrical production. Playwrights write scenes of violence, and directors and designers stage them, with specific dramaturgical goals in mind. The project of this work is to develop a theoretical framework for understanding how productions use representations of violence. Ideally, that framework will be of use both to critics seeking to analyze productions with violence and to practitioners who want to more consciously shape their own use of violence.

This project analyzes two books of contemporary creative nonfiction: The Argonauts by Maggie Nelson (2015) and Time Is the Thing a Body Moves Through by T Fleischmann (2019). Both writers centrally deal with queerness in their texts as a concept that is ineffable, or unable to be fully explained in words. I explain how to think about queerness as ineffable through the work of queer theorists Judith Butler and José Esteban Muñoz. In their books, Nelson and Fleischmann recognize that language is insufficient or even harmful in maintaining the ineffability of queerness, which poses a significant paradox for their works …

The research investigated pragmatic transfer in responses to English tag questions by L1 Thai learners based on the theory of interlanguage pragmatics, specifically pragmatic transfer (Kasper & Blum-Kulka, 1993). There were two participant groups: a native control group and two experimental groups. The control group consisted of three native English speakers formulating the baseline data. The experimental groups were categorized according to their English proficiency levels: the intermediate and the advanced groups, with 16 participants in the learners’ group. The current study aimed to investigate the production of L2 English ‘wish-clauses’ by L1 Thai learners, based on the Interlanguage Hypothesis (Corder, 1981; Selinker, 1972, 1992). It was hypothesized that L1 Thai learners showed systematicity in their interlanguage in the use of ‘wish-clauses’ and that their IL was shaped by language transfer and transfer of training, which are among the psychological processes of IL construction. The present study examines how each group of LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) is represented discursively in Bangkok Post, a major English-language newspaper in Thailand. The data comprise LGBT-related news articles from 2012 to 2019. Statistically significant collocates of each term were extracted via AntConc and Sketch Engine and were then categorized according to their semantic relations as observed from their concordance lines. Findings from the Bangkok Post corpus show that the key terms share common semantic preference patterns that point to the discourse about LGBT political movement. This research study investigated the stress patterns and metalinguistic knowledge of Thai learners on the pronunciation of English derivational suffixed words. The study compared how the learners performed before and after the praxis intervention, where the stress placement rules of English suffixed words were explicitly taught and trained. Thirty first-year university students were selected by stratified random sampling based on their proficiency levels and were grouped into the high and low proficiency groups. This research investigated avoidance behaviour as one of the strategies L2 learners may resort to because of L1-L2 differences, or the non-existence of L2 structures for L1 learners (Schachter 1974; Dagut and Laufer 1985). Schachter (1974) proposed the Avoidance Behaviour Hypothesis, whereby L2 learners were likely to avoid using some L2 structures due to the aforementioned difficulties in L2 acquisition. Later researchers, i.e. Dagut and Laufer (1985), and Laufer and Eliasson (1993), claimed that L1-L2 differences tended to play a role, or at least would be the 'best predictor' (1993, p46) of avoidance. การวิจัยครั้งนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาประสิทธิผลของการสอนอ่านแบบแลกเปลี่ยนบทบาทในการพัฒนาทักษะการอ่านภาษาสเปนของนักเรียนชั้นมัธยมศึกษาปีที่ 5 โรงเรียนเตรียมอุดมศึกษา แผนการเรียนภาษา-สเปน และเพื่อพัฒนาแผนการจัดการเรียนรู้ด้านการสอนอ่านตามแนวคิดการสอนแบบแลกเปลี่ยนบทบาทระหว่างครูกับนักเรียน กลุ่มตัวอย่างในการวิจัยครั้งนี้เป็นนักเรียนแผนการเรียนภาษา-สเปน ระดับชั้นมัธยมศึกษา ปีที่ 5 โรงเรียนเตรียมอุดมศึกษา เป็นการสุ่มประชากรตัวอย่างแบบเจาะจง เนื่องจากการจัดการเรียนการสอนภาษาสเปนในโรงเรียนเตรียมอุดมศึกษา จัดให้มีแผนการเรียนภาษา-สเปนเพียง 1 ห้องต่อปีการศึกษา ทำให้ไม่สามารถแบ่งกลุ่มผู้เรียนออกเป็นกลุ่มควบคุมและกลุ่มทดลองเพื่อทำการศึกษาในปีการศึกษาเดียวกันได้ จึงต้องใช้นักเรียนกลุ่มที่ต่างกันด้วยปีการศึกษา กล่าวคือ 1) กลุ่มควบคุม คือ นักเรียนระดับชั้นมัธยมศึกษาปีที่ 5 ภาคเรียนที่ 2 ปีการศึกษา 2561 จำนวน 17 คน ได้รับการสอนตามแผนการจัดการเรียนรู้แบบดั้งเดิม รายวิชา ป30204 ภาษาสเปน 4 กลุ่มสาระการเรียนรู้ภาษาต่างประเทศที่ 2 โรงเรียนเตรียมอุดมศึกษา และ 2) กลุ่มทดลอง คือ นักเรียนระดับชั้นมัธยมศึกษาปีที่ 5 ภาคเรียนที่ 2 ปีการศึกษา 2562 จำนวน 24 คน ได้รับการสอนตามแผน การจัดการเรียนรู้ด้านการสอนอ่านแบบแลกเปลี่ยนบทบาทระหว่างครูกับนักเรียน เครื่องมือที่ใช้ในการวิจัยครั้งนี้ได้แก่ แผนการจัดการเรียนรู้ด้านการสอนอ่านแบบแลกเปลี่ยนบทบาทระหว่างครูกับนักเรียน แบบทดสอบวัดความสามารถด้านการอ่านภาษาสเปนเพื่อความเข้าใจ แบบประเมินตนเองด้านการอ่านภาษาสเปนเพื่อความเข้าใจของนักเรียน และแบบสังเกตพฤติกรรมด้านการอ่านเพื่อความเข้าใจของนักเรียนโดยครูเป็นผู้สังเกต สถิติที่ใช้ในการวิเคราะห์ข้อมูล ได้แก่ ค่าเฉลี่ย ส่วนเบี่ยงเบนมาตรฐาน และค่า t-test ผลการวิจัยจากการศึกษาประสิทธิผลของการสอนอ่านแบบแลกเปลี่ยนบทบาทระหว่างครูกับนักเรียนในการพัฒนาทักษะการอ่านภาษาสเปน พบว่านักเรียนที่ได้รับการสอนตามแผนการจัดการเรียนรู้ด้านการสอนอ่านแบบแลกเปลี่ยนบทบาทระหว่างครูกับนักเรียนมีคะแนนเฉลี่ยความสามารถด้านการอ่านภาษาสเปนเพื่อความเข้าใจหลังการทดลองสูงกว่าก่อนการทดลองอย่างมีนัยสำคัญทางสถิติที่ .05 ซึ่งสูงกว่าคะแนนเฉลี่ยหลังการทดลองของกลุ่มควบคุม จึงสรุปได้ว่า การสอนอ่านภาษาสเปนเพื่อความเข้าใจโดยใช้แผนการจัดการเรียนรู้ด้านการสอนอ่านแบบแลกเปลี่ยนบทบาทระหว่างครูกับนักเรียนมีประสิทธิผลคือ ทำให้ทักษะการอ่านภาษาสเปนเพื่อความเข้าใจของนักเรียนสูงขึ้น

Corpus linguistic research has consistently shown that there is an interconnectedness between patterns and meanings in language use (Hunston and Francis, 2000; Römer, 2006). Many critics have suggested that most of the non-human characters in late-Victorian British science-fiction novels reflect social alienation and the cultural fear of physical, mental and moral degeneration. This dissertation examines literary estrangement, that is the act and effect of making the familiar strange in a literary work, in the religious poems and sermons of the poet-preacher John Donne (1572–1631). My study uncovers and explores what Donne "estranges," how he achieves this, and for what purpose, as well as the practices and modes of thinking that shaped his poetics. In Donne's religious verse and prose, making the familiar and traditional tropes, images, doctrines, and events of Christianity strange forms active readers and revitalizes those elements, imbuing them with newfound interest, significance, and affective power.

This essay argues that the successful political careers of certain populist leaders rhetorically enact what scholars have long recognized in art, literature, and entertainment as the grotesque. The grotesque provides a theoretically rich means for describing the vulgar and chaotic public behaviors that take strong hold among anti-elite audiences at certain points in history. By closely reading comments from political leaders cast in the grotesque mold, including Silvio Berlusconi, Hugo Chavez, and Donald Trump, this essay explains not only what the grotesque is, but also when and how it is likely to find traction in a political culture ripe for …

This chapter examines eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century visions of apocalypse regarding the future of black lives in the American body politic. It begins with readings of Jefferson’s fear of a black planet in Notes on the State of Virginia and Crèvecoeur’s depictions of racial terror in Letters from an American Farmer. The chapter then investigates the writing of an African American herald of the end times, Christopher MacPherson. The chapter reads the apocalyptic jeremiad of MacPherson’s pamphlet, Christ’s Millennium (1811), as a reparative response to the suppression of black voices and the annihilation of black lives.

J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth has been dissected and researched by philologists, medievalists, and literary theorists for decades. Though his work with languages (both historical and invented) has garnered attention over the past few decades, few scholars have looked at his languages in terms of their rhetorical functions within the narrative (as history), with the narrative (as artifacts), and without (as cultural participation).
