The Moxon Tennyson : A Landmark In Victorian Illustration, Simon Cooke

A new perspective on a book that transformed Victorian illustration into a stand-alone art.
Edward Moxon’s 1857 edition of Alfred, Lord Tennyson’s Poems dramatically redefined the relationship between images and words in print. Cooke’s study, the first book to address the subject in over 120 years, presents a sweeping analysis of the illustrators and the complex and challenging ways in which they interpreted Tennyson’s poetry. This book considers the volume’s historical context, examining in detail the roles of publisher, engravers, and binding designer, as well as the material difficulties of printing its fine illustrations, which recreate the effects of painting. …

This volume is the first to reconsider Roethke’s work in terms of the expanded critical approaches to literature that have emerged since his death in 1963. "To Work Without Stopping": Masculinity And The Midwestern Farm Novel, Andy Oler

Ruth Suckow's Country People (1924) and Jane Smiley's A Thousand Acres (1991) feature hard-working young farmers who develop their land and gain the esteem of their community. As they age, however, their abilities decline and their reputation erodes, not only revealing their personal flaws but also exemplifying the harms of American masculinity on farmers and their families. By incorporating scholarship on aging farmers and farm economics, this chapter shows how, when August Kaetterhenry and Larry Cook attempt to hand over the farm to the next generation, they miss the sense of ownership and control they had as working farmers. The present research discusses the significance of the cognitive interpretation of conceptual information in belles-lettres as a key element in the process of revelation of implicit information veiled by the author. The adequate interpretation of cognitive context affects deeper understanding of the author’s intention and explicates the general idea of a literary text. Among the language units there are also words that have undergone phonetic changes in pronunciation. From a phonostylistic point of view, the pronunciation of such words have additional, i.e. connotative meanings. Phonetically modified words are divided into two, that is, the increase and decrease of speech sound in the pronunciation of words. The phenomenon of so-called sound acquisition includes the phenomena of prosthesis, epenthesis, epithesis. The so-called sound omission includes aphaeresis, syncope, apocope, elision.

Mirzo Abdulkadir Bedil is a poet who had a strong influence on the Uzbek literary environment of the XIX-XX centuries. His works have been diligently read by Uzbek enlighteners, especially Uzbek Jadid intellectuals. Those who could read Bedil's works well and make comment on their content were given a "bedilkhan" name. It is also known that Bedil's works were skillfully copied by calligraphers who lived in the territory of modern Uzbekistan, and these calligraphers were given the status of "bedilnavis". This essay details the history of the De Doctrina Christiana authorship controversy, suggesting that the debate’s conclusion in favor of Miltonic provenance was declared prematurely. It considers Falcone’s and Kerr’s recent essays in light of the larger controversy and proposes that one consequence of the larger debate should be the liberty for scholars to analyze Milton’s theological presentations in his poetry apart from the specter of DDC.

Subjects Of Economy: Social Documentary Poetics And Contemporary Poetry Of Work, Michelle B. Gaffey

Although the term “documentary” originated in film and photography studies, it has been used to describe a range of compositional and research strategies in discussions of twentieth and twenty-first century poetry as well. A study of such documentary poetics, however, requires us to distinguish between documentary poetics in general and social documentary poetics in particular. To illustrate this distinction, I discuss five contemporary books of poetry and photographs: C.D.
