The Making Of Monsters: Creativity And Morality In Gothic Novels Frankenstein And The Picture Of Dorian Gray, Elisa Klaassen

This study examined Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, which foreshadows the Victorian period, and Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray, which reflects on it. The two novels are both monster stories that share many similarities, including themes of creativity and morality. However, the two novels are distinctly different in surprising ways. This thesis serves as an examination of their differing treatments of creativity and morality. In its examination, it reveals the ways in which Shelley couples these themes, foreshadowing Victorianism, while Wilde decouples them, reflecting and refracting on Victorian themes. Margins Of The City: Urban Masculinity And Identity Politics In British Social-Realist Queer Cinema, Yi Li

This dissertation identifies and analyzes a history of queer politics and identities in British realist cinema from the early 1960s to the 2010s. Focusing primarily on filmmakers Sidney J. Furie, Stephen Frears, Hettie MacDonald, and Andrew Haigh, it traces British queer maleness of the working class by tracking its changing representations and demonstrates how urban cinematic realism proves central to British definitions of masculinity. The first chapter investigates how foundational films of the British New Wave address social inequalities as consequences of class and sexuality to consider how they embraced a sexual frankness and realism with coded and decoded homoeroticism. …

The witch hysteria that overtook Christian Europe during the Early Modern era inspired a mass paranoia over the conspiratorial belief that the Abrahamic religion’s personification of the world’s evils, also known as Satan, the Devil, demons, or Lucifer interchangeably, was attempting to rise up and cause harm to Christian communities during this time period. In this project, I argue for an Indigenous theory of myth in order to reconsider popular and academic paradigms about myth and its function. My goal is to articulate how Indigenous understandings might revise these paradigms by emphasizing myth as a means to foster ethical relationships of health and balance within ourselves and in the world. Inspired by the Indigenous writers Leslie Marmon Silko, Thomas King, and Gerald Vizenor, I outline how these authors think, write, and talk about the concept of myth. This issue of Mythlore commemorates the life and writing of author Ursula Kroeber Le Guin: visionary essayist, poet, blogger, critic, teacher, and grandmaster of fantasy and science fiction via novel, novella, and short story. Le Guin was indisputably a gamechanger in the fiction genres of fantasy and science fiction, and her essays about these genres remain some of the most thought-provoking and insightful ever published. Le Guin has left us a body of mythopoeic work that is an inexhaustible source of wonder.

C. S. Lewis’S Complex Relationship With Queer Milton Studies: Indirect Inspiration, Hegemonic Antagonist, And Erased Inconvenient Forerunner, David V. Urban

This essay discusses queer Milton scholarship’s various responses to C. S. Lewis’s A Preface to Paradise Lost, beginning with Gregory Bredbeck’s groundbreaking 1991 PMLA article through the 2018 volume Queer Milton and beyond. Although most of these responses portray Lewis as one whose explicit denial of queer angelic behavior in Paradise Lost has served to prevent queer readings of Milton, Lewis can also been seen as one who, by this explicit denial, indirectly brought about queer Milton studies. Attention will be paid to Drew Daniel’s unexpected 2014 portrayal of Lewis’s offering an especially daring queer vision of Paradise Lost, a …

As women of color faculty who have experienced challenges associated with hostile work environments within predominantly white institutions, we consider the ways that working remotely during COVID-19 offers transformative possibilities for reimagining our relationship to the academy. We discuss our embodied responses to institutional spaces that often marginalize faculty of color; how university leadership may be reimagined through a blurring of gendered, racialized lines of “public” and “private” (or institutional and domestic) spaces; and the possibility of healing from the trauma associated with oppressive workplaces and institutional betrayals.

Although possessive constructions are formed differently in Spanish as compared to English, most notably through the insertion of the preposition de as compared to the Saxon genitive ‘s, both languages require that possessive Ɵ-roles must be assigned and possessive Case must be checked when possessive constructions are formed. This research follows authors such as Picallo (1994), Antrim (2003), and Bernstein (2005) to propose that possessive Ɵ-roles and possessive Case are assigned and checked, respectively, by specific, separate functional projections, which are only generated in instances of a possessive relationship. Responding to the French Revolution (1789-1799) with his widely read text Reflections on the Revolution in France (1790), conservative Whig politician Edmund Burke influentially accused an ambitious bourgeoisie of inciting the lower classes to revolt against the aristocracy and Bourbon dynasty. He also insinuated that only the class hierarchy and feudal respect prevented a similar upstart peril in England from occasioning revolution. For the English middle classes, this demonization of upstarts, or parvenus posed an ideological challenge to their public consolidation as a political and cultural force. This article employed a mixed-method approach to examine peer review through the eyes of writing instructors and first-year college students, including native and non-native speakers of English. A total of 162 participants took part in the study, including 124 students and 20 full time writing instructors. The quantitative analysis involved multiple chi-square tests and Fisher’s exact tests with Bonferroni adjustments for Type-I error. The qualitative data were examined for common themes and summarized in categories illustrated by participants’ quotes. This study examined the effectiveness of written corrective and the role of individual differences (ID) in the uptake of the feedback. Data was taken from a nine-week, English as a foreign language (EFL) writing course from 101 intermediate (n=101) students at a private university in Kobe, Japan. Using an explanatory sequential mixed methods design, quantitative data was first collected concerning writing errors, followed by qualitative semi-structured interviews. Three classes were placed into either two treatment groups (direct and indirect) or a control group, and completed four writing tasks (pre-test, post-test and two delayed post-tests). This paper aims at examining the representation of Animal, the protagonist, and “non-human” characters in Indra Sinha’s Animal’s People (2007). It discusses various ways in which the socially constructed concepts of “humanity” and “animality” are called into question and strategically deployed in the portrayal of these characters. It argues that Sinha attempts to dismantle binary thinking which not only constitutes the distinction between the human and the animal but also underpins the West’s domination of the East. This study aims to 1) explore the reading strategies of EMI in science program Thai learners 2) explore students’ opinions towards the use of reading strategies in EMI context. Participants include 71 students studying at Kamnoetvidya Science Academy, the science high school located in Rayong, Thailand. The research instruments consisted of the Reading Strategies Questionnaire and the semi-structure interview. The data were analyzed through descriptive statistics and content analysis. The results from the questionnaire showed that the students reported overall medium frequency of reading strategy use. The purpose of the present study is to examine whether structural priming can facilitate L1 Thai learners’ acquisition of English dative constructions, both English DO construction and English PO construction and to investigate whether different priming conditions have different learning effects on L1 Thai learners’ acquisition of English dative constructions. The first hypothesis states that the L1 Thai learners produce English dative constructions, both DO construction and PO construction, at higher rates after receiving the structural priming experiments. This thesis examines the connection of ethics and survival in the pre- and post-apocalyptic worlds in Margaret Atwood's MaddAddam trilogy: Oryx and Crake (2003), The Year of the Flood (2009), and MaddAddam (2013). It investigates the author’s imaginings of a dystopian society marked by rampant technocratic capitalism and unchecked scientism in Oryx and Crake. Applying Murray Bookchin's social ecology to shed light on the root causes of the apocalypse, it argues that hierarchical ideology and diversiform inequality deeply rooted in society lead to warped ethics, affecting the crisis. This study aimed to investigate how the corpus-based teaching approach could enhance L2 acquisition of English infinitive and gerund complements among low English proficiency L1 Thai young learners. Sixty-four secondary students were equally divided into an experimental group and a control group. The experimental group learned English verbal complements through the corpus approach, while the control group did through the traditional teaching approach. Data were collected through a pretest, a posttest, and an interview. This study explores cross-language intensification in affirmative sentences by examining the translation of standard and strong amplifiers, words that scale upward from an assumed norm to emphasize a quality of any entities, from Thai into English, the types of shifts involved, as well as similarities and differences in the translation of amplifiers by native and non-native translators. The data comprises 1,254 source text amplifiers, which were drawn from a corpus of eight works of fiction in Thai and their English translations translated by professional translators. The present study aims to investigate and compare language use in film scripts of American mainstream movies and in Noah Baumbach's, focusing on lexical bundles and their functional contributions to meanings and aesthetic values of the given texts. Two corpora were compiled as the datasets: Mainstream Film Corpus (MFC), which consists of 100 screenplays of top Hollywood blockbusters during 2005-2019, and Noah Baumbach Corpus (NBC), which contains five film scripts written by Noah Baumbach alone. This study explored learners' beliefs about English as an international language through project-based language learning in a Chinese rural school. Three English teachers and 102 Grade 6 Chinese EFL learners participated over two separate phases. Phase I explored how teachers implemented the project-based language learning via classroom observation and semi-structured interviews. The findings from this phase were used to construct the six aspects of the EIL project-based language learning questionnaire in Phase 2. This research investigated and compared the use of English spoken discourse markers by Thai EFL learners and by native English speakers. Six English spoken discourse markers, namely like, so, well, you know, I think and I mean, are compared in two aspects: frequency and pragmatic function. การแปลคำภาษาสเปนในต้นฉบับภาษาอังกฤษของภาพยนตร์เรื่อง Coco เป็นภาษาไทย, อาสาฬห์ เกษตรสุนทร

วิทยานิพนธ์นี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อ 1) ศึกษากลวิธีการแปลบทบรรยายไทยจากเสียงฉบับภาษา อังกฤษที่มีภาษาสเปนแทรก 2) วิเคราะห์ปัจจัยในการเลือกกลวิธีการแปลคำภาษาสเปนในเสียงต้นฉบับภาษาอังกฤษเป็นภาษาไทย 3) สำรวจความเข้าใจและความพึงพอใจของผู้ชมชาวไทยที่มีต่อกลวิธีการแปลคำภาษาสเปนแบบต่างๆในบทบรรยายของภาพยนตร์เรื่องนี้ จากการเก็บข้อมูลคำภาษาสเปนที่แทรกอยู่ในต้นฉบับภาษาอังกฤษในภาพยนตร์เรื่อง Coco (วันอลวน วิญญาณอลเวง) พบคำภาษาสเปนในต้นฉบับภาษาอังกฤษในภาพยนตร์ทั้งหมด 182 ครั้งซึ่งใช้กลวิธีการแปล 4 กลวิธีได้แก่ 1) การแปลแบบตรงตัว 2) การแปลแบบเอาความ 3) การละ 4) การทับศัพท์ จากการศึกษาพบว่ากลวิธีการแปลแบบตรงตัว ถูกนำมาใช้มากที่สุด 80 ครั้ง ในกรณีที่หากใช้กลวิธีการแปลแบบอื่นจะทำให้ผู้ชมชาวไทยไม่เข้าใจสิ่งที่ตัวละครพูด ส่วนการทับศัพท์เป็นกลวิธีที่สองที่พบรองลงมาทั้งหมด 61 ครั้ง โดยส่วนใหญ่ใช้ในคำเรียกญาติซึ่งมีคำที่ออกเสียงลักษณะคล้ายคำในภาษาไทยหลายคำ กลวิธีการแปลแบบเอาความถูกใช้ 38 ครั้ง ในกรณี ที่ไม่สามารถแปลตรงตัวได้ เนื่องจากไม่สื่อความหรือไม่สละสลวย และสุดท้ายกลวิธีแบบละความเป็นกลวิธีที่พบน้อยที่สุดคือ 3 ครั้ง เนื่องจากผู้แปลพยายามถ่ายทอดความหมายในต้นฉบับโดยไม่ละทิ้งไป และกรณีการละความที่พบไม่ได้ส่งผลต่อความเข้าใจเนื้อหาของผู้ชม

Debilitating Publics: Reading Canlit's Investigations Into Psycho-Affective Pain And Social Change, Rebekah Ludolph

The reception studies that comprise this dissertation take up contemporary depictions of psycho-affective pain from the field of Canadian literature that are embraced by prominent literary publics as an act of social responsibility. Each study contextualizes the publics that review these texts within the ongoing use of literary culture to justify the settler state’s land claim, nationally reparative reading practices, and trends in the therapeutic use of literature.
