Four Buyid coins in the collection of t he American Numismatic Society, struck between 358-68 H. /A.D. 968-79 at two mints in Jibal province, illustrate a phenomenon unique in the history of Islamic coinage. They concern the status of a die engraver named al-Hasan b. Muhammad. A silver dirham bearing his signature was first noted by George C. Miles and published in 1938. It was at that time the only Islamic coin known to bear the signature of a die engraver. More recently, four additional coins have been located which shed more light upon the career of this artisan. The project documented in this catalog were first conceived in early 1978 by Ed Levine, then chairman of the Department of Art and Art History at Wright State University, and Betty Collings, then director of the University Gallery at The Ohio State University in Columbus. Both institutions had, for five years, been sponsoring a variety of exhibitions and experimental projects that probed various aspects of contemporary art. The similarity of goals between the two institutions made this collaborative effort possible.

This thesis presents the results of a longitudinal study of a painting class for a group of mentally and physically handicapped young adults. The author's observational journal and the students' paintings provided the basis of the thesis.

The author gave maximum freedom to her students and the students fully exercised creativity through their painting activity. This experience brought a new identity to the group. The students evolved from a collection of separate people into a cohesive social unit.

"Current Charts: Chosen Lands", by Richard Fisher, was the title of an exhibition ho s ted by the Fine Arts Gallery from February 9 through March 1, 1978. This paper, in three parts, explains why and how fifth and sixth grade students at a Navajo bilingual elementary school in New Mexico built a solar greenhouse as a language arts project. The first part catalogues the English speaking, reading, and writing needs of the children. It details the rationale behind building a greenhouse to address these needs. The second part is the greenhouse project itself. It contains English lessons which the students used as guidelines for planning and building the greenhouse structure. The third part, found in the Appendix, contains one of the students' workbooks.

This thesis, "Self-Portrait as a Measure of Self-Perception" by Susan LaMantia O'Connor, explores how self-portraiture can serve as a therapeutic tool for understanding self-perception. The present inquiry into its Islamic source offers a new interpretation of the Bryas palace within the context of Middle Byzantine secular architecture and the development of court ceremonial. ::?revious studies have concentrated upon locating Bryas in efforts to determine the extent of Islamic impact on the architecture of Byzantium.
