"Sustainability Of Traditional Terracotta Artisan Communities In West Bengal", Laura-Harris Gascogne
Sabbatical Projects
Project Synopsis:
The long tradition of terracotta sculpture making survives in the state of West Bengal today, but due to several factors, it is at risk of being lost. I wish to research and document the disappearing processes and traditions being employed by terracotta artisan communities in the state and surrounding region. I believe that I will offer a parallel appreciation and intimate technical understanding of this material as a sculptor who has studied and applied terracotta within my own work. Secondly, as an academic, I have demonstrated a continuum of interest in studying and applying elements of traditional Indian …

Artists' Books
5 volumes : chiefly color illustrations,. "On inauguration day January 20, 2017, artist Richard Kraft began issuing Donald Trump colored cards, just as a soccer referee penalizes players who transgress the rules and code of conduct. For four years, Kraft scoured the news and Trump's Twitter feed every day, notating and assigning each of Trump's transgressions a colored penalty card (at first, yellow and red, as in soccer--and then Kraft devised magenta, purple, and crimson for ever-escalating offenses). Kraft issued almost 10,000 cards to Trump, half of them in 2020. In this set of five artist's books, totaling over 1600 …

Object Analysis Projects
Tawny Chamberlain, VCU Interior Design MFA 2023, selected the Coffee Pot for the 2021 Colonialism And The Americas, Object Analysis Project.
Entertaining in the home was also important and high society wished to emulate silver tableware from London in particular. Only the affluent could afford silver coffee pots and their elite status would have been marked by how many pieces they used to serve their guests. Tea and coffee rituals were also associated with elite femininity, as depicted by two Boston women in the painting to the right (Jamieson, 2001). We can imagine their parlor had elegantly framed mirrors and …

Candlestick, Caitlin Mclean
Object Analysis Projects
Caitlin McLean, VCU Interior Design MFA 2023, selected the Candlestick for the 2021 Colonialism And The Americas, Object Analysis Project.
Candlesticks were a physical representation of wealth and status, so it’s very likely these were regularly kept on display during meals or in the bedroom. Candles themselves were expensive - given the prosperity of the Schuylers [owners], it’s probable that these were used fairly regularly, as they could afford to maintain a supply of candles. Because they were originally made in a set of four with a snuffer stand, I believe these were made for display purposes, likely in a …

A Brief Study Of The Development Of Video Games As An Artform, Sarah Yong
A Brief Study Of The Development Of Video Games As An Artform, Sarah Yong
Undergraduate Honors College Theses 2016-
Video games have come a long way in the few decades since its conception, traversing many styles and platforms that progress with the development of new tech-nology. Video games are an expression of numerous art forms, packaged into an in-teractive work of art with an industry rivaling cinema and film. Visual design of games has evolved alongside technology as more becomes possible, and many games can be dated throughout game history the same as artwork over the course of history. Much like the invention of ready-mixed paints, the publishing of the first Mario Bros marked a turning point in game …

Cares, Labors, And Dangers: A Queer Game Informed By Research, Amy Schwinge
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Queerness as a quality has a permanent fluidity. Videogames as a medium are continually evolving and advancing. Thus, queer games have a vast potential as an art form and research subject. While there is already a wealth of knowledge surrounding queer games my contribution takes the form of both research paper and creative endeavor. I created a game by interpreting the queer elements present in games research. My game reflects the trends and qualities present in contemporary queer games, such as critiques on empathy and alternative game-making programs. This paper details what research inspired elements of my game as well …
Critical Modding: A Design Framework For Exploring Representation In Games, Kenton Howard
Critical Modding: A Design Framework For Exploring Representation In Games, Kenton Howard
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
In this project, I created a framework for exploring problems with representations of marginalized characters in video games called "critical modding." The main goal of this project was to provide a method for addressing issues with portrayals of queer characters in video games through modification of a game's narrative and gameplay systems. I also created a video game prototype called Life in the Megapocalypse as a digital tool for engaging in critical modding. In addition, I created classroom assignments based on the game prototype aimed at helping people learn more about problems with portrayals of queer characters in games through …

This collection of essays in the Diálogos Thoma issue, Latin American and Latinx Visual Culture 3.4, continue to share the research that has generated from the Congreso de Arte Virreinal “El futuro del arte del pasado,” an international symposium held in Lima, Peru in July 2019. This Diálogos Thoma continues these hemispheric and international conversations among scholars that began at the Thoma Congreso in 2019 and continued in LALVC 3.3. These essays in both issues contribute to the theoretical and methodological transformations in our field to create dynamic new trajectories for Spanish colonial art history to study the visual culture …

Rhizomes of Mexican American Art Since 1848 is an online digital tool that addresses the problem of discoverability caused by Eurocentric cataloging and vocabularies and historical erasure due to racism, sexism, and Western notions of art. Informed by intersectionality and decolonial theory, as proposed by Latina, Black, and Indigenous feminist scholarship, Rhizomes uses a broad notion of "art" in order to reach across humanities disciplines, types of institutions, time periods, and modes of creativity, as well as an inclusive notion of "Mexican America" that does not rely on citizenship. Conceived and designed in stages, Rhizomes will eventually assist under-resourced institutions …

Covid-10, Healthcare Interior Design + Provider Experience - How Does Your Space Work For You?, Ruth E.P. Deibler
Graduate Research Posters
The lack of research on healthcare staff experience and interior design of the spaces they work in is evident. A focus on staff perspective is needed, particularly staff who navigated the COVID-19 pandemic. This research seeks to capture those stories to develop further research in order to improve staff experience. The initial phase of this mixed-methods approach is a survey. Hypothetically, by placing providers at the center of qualitative research related to healthcare interior design, we can better understand existing healthcare spaces. Ideally, we can develop additional evidence-based, human-centered solutions to transform interior environments in healthcare.

Comic Narrative Expression And Aesthetics: From Print To Webtoons, Kai Shao
Comic Narrative Expression And Aesthetics: From Print To Webtoons, Kai Shao
Selected Full-Text Master Theses 2021-
Comics are a unique way for artists to tell stories. The production and distribution of comics are affected by technological development. In this process, comics formed their special narrative language and aesthetic system. With the development of digital technology and portable devices, comics as a medium is undergoing major transformations towards digitization. However, most digital comics still abide by the format and layout that traditional printed comics have used for so long. Although some platforms have tried to innovate their design and layout to be delivered digitally, not all of these attempts have been successful. Webtoon originated in South Korea …

Queen Mother / Mitochondrial Eve, Jayda Johnson
Oswald Research and Creativity Competition
Artist Statement
This project is a recontextualization of a historical painting of the Christian iconography symbol of Charity with children. In the painting, I am taking Guido Reni’s original painting of a young maiden breast-feeding orphan children and turning it into the idea of the Mitochondrial Eve taking care of her racially diverse children. The Mitochondrial Eve is the common matrilineal ancestor of all humans and passed down mitochondrial DNA through every female descendent, making her the mother of all humanity in a way. By appropriating this image with black imagery like a full afro, Kente cloth patterns, and African …

Popping (Post)Modernism: Joaquín Torres-Garcia & Latin America's Pop Art Movement, Alexandra Branscom
Scripps Senior Theses
Even though the canon of Western Art History has attributed the Pop movement to the US and the UK, artists from around the world have made significant contributions to pop art and formed their own Pop movements. This includes the Latin American pop artists Felipe Ehrenberg (Mexican), Antonio Henrique Amaral (Brazilian), and Juan Dávila (Chilean), who, between the years 1968 and 1974, fled right-wing political unrest of their respective home countries and gained artistic education in dominant, imperialistic countries. These artists subvert the capitalistic, adverting language of pop art to promote the localized political sensibilities of their home countries and …
The Hidden Secrets Of Historical Artistry, Jennifer B. Musser
The Hidden Secrets Of Historical Artistry, Jennifer B. Musser
Honors Undergraduate Theses
When I began developing the video game concept for my thesis, I realized that I was one of the kids that grew up in a society where video games took prevalence over historical artistry. I, however, was unaware of the hidden secrets that resided in the art and how much they contribute to the video games I enjoy playing today. This thesis aims to provide the younger generations with an engaging and stimulating way to experience historical artistry, more specifically the Italian Renaissance, without having to consult a history book. I aim to provide enough detail on multiple aspects of …

Combat Music, Usability, And Presence In Video Games, Jedidah Wong
Honors Undergraduate Theses
The interactive nature of video games offers players unique playthroughs of the same game. Choices made during gameplay, despite going through the same narrative story, create a journey that differs from other players. Music can help support a player's connection to the game's characters and narrative while also providing information to the player to guide their decisions. Ludomusicological studies in the past have shown how music can support a game's narrative, while also serving to inform players of changes in game states. The usability function of music, while crucial in this overall sonic experience, is not the sole purpose that …

A Third Culture Kid's Quest For Belonging: Ephemeral, Eternal, And The Space In Between, Simona Darshani Wiig
Honors Undergraduate Theses
In fulfillment of my degree of Bachelor of Fine Arts at the University of Central Florida specializing in sculpture and ceramics, I have produced a body of artwork in a range of media, including printmaking, bookbinding, painting, ceramics, and sculpture. This thesis is the exegesis of my creative work, informed by contemporary artworks and the study of shelter-making in nature. Utilizing The Practitioner Model of Creative Cognition as defined by R. Lyle Skains, I will establish my work as practice-based research. While "exegesis" generally refers to the critical examination of written work, I feel it is appropriate in this context …

Protesta është një nga armët të cilën e përdorin njerëzit e thjeshtë kundër një dukurie e cila nuk ju pëlqen. New Old Stones At Antiochia In Rough Cilicia: A Novel City Name And A Proposed Visit By Hadrian And Sabina, Michael C. Hoff, Rhys F. Townsend, Timothy Howe
School of Art, Art History, and Design: Faculty Publications and Creative Activity
This article considers the evidence of newly discovered inscriptions from Antiochia ad Cragum in western Rough Cilicia and proposes two distinct observations: one, the city had an additional civic name different from that which is most commonly known; and two, the emperor Hadrian and Sabina may have visited the city and region during their journey from Egypt to Athens in 131 CE.
The excavations at the Roman-era city of Antiochia ad Cragum on the Turkish south coast have been ongoing since 2005, and since the beginning inscriptions have been discovered that shed helpful light on the history of the city. …

Pistore Panem Petimus: Specialization In The Late-Roman Baking Industry, Jared Benton
Pistore Panem Petimus: Specialization In The Late-Roman Baking Industry, Jared Benton
Art Faculty Publications
The traditional Roman baker (pistor) is typically thought of as having been horizontally specialized; that is to say he or she performed all the tasks involved in converting raw materials (grain, salt, and water) into bread. This means that they were, in early modern terminology, both millers and bakers. The two professions are generally thought to have vertically specialized within the industry sometime at the end of antiquity. Previously, scholarship has only casually treated this instance of specialization and for the most part it is thought to have been driven by technological innovation, specifically the watermill, which took milling out …

For Consumption: Observations Of Paint, Food, & Culture, Annette Tojar
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
This thesis is a visual documentation of my story. In it, I discuss the urgency which drives the creation of my work. Unable to speak the same language, my grandmother and I used food and paint as means of communication, thus instilling my love of food, my desire to paint, and my need to investigate my Cuban culture. As a former professional pastry chef, my understanding of the physicality of food informs how it is portrayed on a two-dimensional surface for visual indulgence. I explore loss, objectification, transculturation, and the pandemic through images of food, while experimenting with the properties …

Rules For Living And How I Began To Break Them: The Influence Of Creative Practice And Cognitive Dissonance On Personal Growth, Timothy Reid
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
I create experimental films and installations that challenge the belief system I inherited from well-intended people who believed they furnished me with the "right" answers, behaviors, and expectations for a good and proper life. Applying the theory of cognitive dissonance as a philosophical framework to this formative and enforced messaging helps me appreciate why it is so difficult to accept new information incongruent with one's previously held beliefs. Through parallel efforts of self-reflection, research, and creative practice, I have begun to reexamine my upbringing and the ensuing insecurities, contradictions, and feelings of hypocrisy they engendered. My work aspires to transform …

Counterpoint: Music And Art Education, Eileen Kosasih
MA Projects
Music education programming is generally not as accessible or available as museum education programming. General music illiteracy and the elitism of music education perpetuate a cycle of inaccessibility and lack of understanding of the value of music education. Meanwhile, the auditory art form is a fundamental component of culture, society, and history. Music’s language and history should be understood and appreciated widely. Art museum education programmers can work with music educators, music historians, and classical music programmers to incorporate music education into museum education programming. This project consists of three parts. The first section advocates the inclusion of music education …
