An Educator Looks At Florida In 1884, A Letter Of Ashley D. Hurt To His Wife, Samuel Proctor
An Educator Looks At Florida In 1884, A Letter Of Ashley D. Hurt To His Wife, Samuel Proctor
Florida Historical Quarterly
Ashley Davis Hurt, first president of the Florida Agricultural College, was a native of Petersburg, Virginia (1834). He was educated at the University of Virginia, the University of Bonn, and received a Ph.D. degree from the University of Berlin. After serving in the Confederate Navy he became principal of the Louisville, Kentucky, high school. In the summer of 1884 he was appointed president of the newly established Florida Agricultural College at Lake City. Later he held the chair of Greek in Tulane University. Dr. Hurt died March 10, 1898. The original of the following letter was presented to the University …
De Soto And Terra Cei, John R. Swanton
De Soto And Terra Cei, John R. Swanton
Florida Historical Quarterly
In connection with my work as chairman of the De Soto Expedition Commission between 1935 and 1938 I made a study of the documentary and geographical evidence regarding the location of the point where De Soto landed on the Florida coast in 1539 and the position of his first headquarters. While I was assisted to some extent by other members of the Commission, the conclusions reached were more particularly mine and I assume all responsibility for them. They were originally stated in a paper printed in “The Florida Historical Quarterly” (vol. XVI, no. 3; Jan. 1938) and were incorporated later …
The Railroad Background Of The Florida Senatorial Election Of 1851, Arthur W. Thompson
The Railroad Background Of The Florida Senatorial Election Of 1851, Arthur W. Thompson
Florida Historical Quarterly
The national schism concerning the state of the Union following the Mexican War affected the character and intensity of political debate on the Florida scene no less than it did that of other areas throughout the nation. In Congress, Jefferson Davis and other eminent defenders of the Southern position gained the ardent support of Florida’s Democratic senior Senator, David L. Yulee. In his advocacy of the principle of the concurrent majority, as applied to the bicameral nature of the national legislature, Yulee was dealt a devastating blow by Webster and Clay. By late July of 1850, the proponents of the …
Richard K. Call Vs. The Federal Government On The Seminole War, Herbert J. Doherty Jr.
Richard K. Call Vs. The Federal Government On The Seminole War, Herbert J. Doherty Jr.
Florida Historical Quarterly
In the city of Washington in the autumn of 1836, the United States War Department was in a state of high confusion. On the sixth of October Lewis Cass had resigned as Secretary of War and the vacancy was temporarily filled by an under secretary, C. A. Harris. Within a few days the office was bestowed upon Benjamin F. ButIer, an interim appointee. These changes came during one of the crises of the Seminole War in Florida, which added to the confusion in Washington, In midsummer the command of that war had been vested in Governor Richard K. Call who …

The Fatio Family: A Book Review, Walter C. Hartridge
Florida Historical Quarterly
This account of the Fatios and their descendants is a significant contribution to the regional history of our country, and it deserves to be viewed and evaluated against the background of historical writing relating to the southeast for the past century and a half.
Documents Describing The Second And Third Expeditions Of Lieutenant Diego Pena To Apalachee And Apalachicolo In 1717 And 1718, Mark F. Boyd
Documents Describing The Second And Third Expeditions Of Lieutenant Diego Pena To Apalachee And Apalachicolo In 1717 And 1718, Mark F. Boyd
Florida Historical Quarterly
The success attained by Lieutenant Diego Pena in the discharge of the mission to Apalachee and Apalachicolo, to which he was assigned in the summer of 1716, made him the logical choice for similar duties in the following two years. The authorities in St. Augustine entertained the hope of repopulating Apalachee through inducements offered to surviving Apalacheans then living along the Apalachicolo (present-day Chattahoochee) river and elsewhere, as well as members of adjacent and related tribes, whose disillusionment with the English had produced the then recent Yamassee war. Knowledge that the success of this project was imperiled by the English, …
Foreign Travellers In Florida, 1900-1950, Lawrence S. Thompson
Foreign Travellers In Florida, 1900-1950, Lawrence S. Thompson
Florida Historical Quarterly
During the first half of the twentieth century more foreign writers visited the South than at any other period in history. Among the various Southern states the most popular among this group of visitors were Florida, Louisiana, Texas, and Virginia. In many instances Virginia was a sort of afterthought to the customary visit to Washington, but the other three states attracted foreigners primarily on account of their own colorful history and scenery. If New Orleans were to be placed in a separate category as a tourist attraction, Florida would outstrip Louisiana in this respect. Moreover, a large proportion of travellers …
St. Augustine During The Civil War, Omega G. East
St. Augustine During The Civil War, Omega G. East
Florida Historical Quarterly
Three days before Florida seceded from the Union about 125 state artillerymen marched resolutely on Fort Marion’s Federal garrison as ordered by Governor M. S. Perry. The action which resulted cannot be recorded as one of the major engagements of the war, if we are to believe Private J. Gardner (a member of the expedition), who reminisced: “We took possession of the fort, and captured the entire garrison, consisting of one lonely sergeant, well advanced in years, who surrendered very graciously.“

The Anti-Social Media, Trevor Ehrgood
The Anti-Social Media, Trevor Ehrgood
English Department: Research for Change - Wicked Problems in Our World
The rabbit hole that is social media can be very comforting to most, but what happens when people are overexposed at a young age? What happens when the elderly start to use social media? These are questions that experts have been asking and researching for years now. If you ask these experts, they’ll tell you that letting kids use social media constantly is not the greatest idea, and yet we, as a society, continue to let it happen. The real question we should be asking is “What harm can be done from any of this?” The answer? Too much.
Teaching To The Test Or Limiting Students?, Victoria Rivera
Teaching To The Test Or Limiting Students?, Victoria Rivera
English Department: Research for Change - Wicked Problems in Our World
The purpose of this paper is to shine light on the way the school systems have been teaching and how it is affecting students in a negative way. It focuses mainly on teaching to the test and how it stops students from learning creatively and also does not let teachers teach the way they might want to. It also shows how this is a wicked problem and is more than a small school system issue. This impacts students, teachers, and the society we live in. The results of this research was that there were a lot of other authors that …
The Issue Of Unemployment Among People With Disabilities, Angelina C. Pagano
The Issue Of Unemployment Among People With Disabilities, Angelina C. Pagano
English Department: Research for Change - Wicked Problems in Our World
The rate of unemployment for people with disabilities continues to rise greatly above that of people without disabilities. The issue seems to be exacerbated by employer biases and concerns which are not supported in the face of evidence. A lack of employer education on disability related subjects causes this misconception among both employers and the public as a whole. To resolve the underlying problem of miseducation, an increase in the self-identification of people with disabilities is necessary to provide researchers with data to assist in the formation of a revised curriculum.
The Opioid Crisis Meets Covid-19 Pandemic, Hannah M. Westerman
The Opioid Crisis Meets Covid-19 Pandemic, Hannah M. Westerman
English Department: Research for Change - Wicked Problems in Our World
Abstract: How have the COVID-19 pandemic and the Opioid Crisis have collided to create a negative effect on those who abuse drugs and other substances? These two wicked problems are now collectively making it more difficult for those to recover and overcome substance and drug abuse worsening the Opioid Epidemic. With no clear answer in sight can vaccines and more accessible rehab help to progress these wicked problems?
Looking Into The Effects Of The Age Of The Internet, Sarah Schaefer
Looking Into The Effects Of The Age Of The Internet, Sarah Schaefer
English Department: Research for Change - Wicked Problems in Our World
The internet has grown to play a large part in our society in the past couple decades, but with the rapid change in technology we have been ill prepared for the effects of our reliance on digital content. Looking into how different demographics and age groups are affected, we come to a conclusion that the general population needs to work to better educate themselves on the impact caused from an overuse of the internet.
Corruption In Capsules: How It Is Legal For Companies To Put Harmful Ingredients In Vitamins And Dietary Supplements, Emily Leggiero
Corruption In Capsules: How It Is Legal For Companies To Put Harmful Ingredients In Vitamins And Dietary Supplements, Emily Leggiero
English Department: Research for Change - Wicked Problems in Our World
The vitamin and supplement industry has increased exponentially in profits as well as potential products on the market since the turn of the century. However, these products are not regulated, nor do they undergo any premarket clinical research or testing. Public health is compromised by vitamins and supplements that are available for American consumption that is disproportionately unregulated to their chemically similar counterparts. This wicked problem is facilitated through the combination of historical legislative definitions that has since been distorted for corrupt administrative gain through the allotment of corporate expenditures. Company disbursements are made to the same policymakers that create …

Racism cuts deep. In a recent study by Shardae McNeil, 87 and 94% of African Americans reported experiencing at least one discriminatory event by the time they reached adolescence. Her research indicates that those that experience racial discrimination during adolescence are vulnerable to a greater risk of lower psychological functioning, internalized symptoms, and elevated levels of depressive symptomology. McNeil introduces the component of family support. Family support is an important coping method for incidents such as racial discrimination and can bring a positive mental health outcome in adolescents.
Cancel The Behavior, Not The Person, Mckenna M. Wychunas
Cancel The Behavior, Not The Person, Mckenna M. Wychunas
English Department: Research for Change - Wicked Problems in Our World
A wicked problem is one that is here to stay, no matter how many solutions are thought of. No matter the solution, it will always interfere with another wicked problem, leaving it in an endless cycle. Cancel culture will always exist, even if it becomes less intense, it will still be here. Though there are differing opinions on the topic of cancel culture, I have researched the negative side to canceling, and I have provided examples of real-life people that have been affected by it. Along with that, I have also given a variety of feasible solutions that could help …
Drug Addiction & Mental Health, Tyler Burkholder
Drug Addiction & Mental Health, Tyler Burkholder
English Department: Research for Change - Wicked Problems in Our World
Drugs have a serious effect on our mental health, and mental health has a major effect on drug abuse and addiction. There is a reason so many drug users usually need to keep going back to rehab. It is because drugs affect mental health to a point where you aren’t the same person during and even after drug addiction. Poor mental health also can be a major cause influencing people to start doing drugs. People with depression, anxiety disorders, mood disorders are more prone to drug use. That is why we need to make it a public policy to screen …
The Enemy Of Writing: Standardized Testing, Catelynn Pasterchick
The Enemy Of Writing: Standardized Testing, Catelynn Pasterchick
English Department: Research for Change - Wicked Problems in Our World
As the NCLB (No Child Left Behind) Act of 2001 enforced frequent standardized testing, the US Department of Education established a curriculum centered around drilling test material to meet nationwide requirements. Consequently, students are still offered a limited education, encouraging skills like memorization and quick thinking to be reflected in their scores. Particularly in writing, these tests and timed assignments stifle creativity, as they leave little room for students to be thoughtful and critical in their responses. Standardized tests lead both teachers and students to forget the purpose of writing as a tool for authentic expression and individuality. Furthermore, the …
Guns And Their Place In The Us, Jacob Garibaldi
Guns And Their Place In The Us, Jacob Garibaldi
English Department: Research for Change - Wicked Problems in Our World
Creating this paper was a wicked problem due to how deep of an issue the gun debate is in the United States. In the discussion of guns, there is a side that wants to abolish them, a side that believes in the right of the second amendment, and a middle ground where we can have guns in society with added in legal measures. Surely enough, those that are in opposition to firearms are persuaded due to the acts of violence and crime committed with them. Then there are those that use them in a way of self-defense. Through this paper, …
College Students And Burnout, Alexandra Malc
College Students And Burnout, Alexandra Malc
English Department: Research for Change - Wicked Problems in Our World
This article covers the topic such as burnout in an academic environment. Burnout is a common experience many students face throughout their four plus years in college, and it has serious ramifications. This is a serious issue that affects a student’s social life, academic life, and personal life. There is a severe lack of resources on campus, and the goal of this paper is to bring awareness to this. Students deserve to be heard and seen on their issues, and burnout is a huge one. This article also gives suggestions on how to heal from burnout, along with preventing it …
Save The Rich, Connor Harris
Save The Rich, Connor Harris
English Department: Research for Change - Wicked Problems in Our World
The problem of medication pricing and lobbying in the healthcare industry has caused millions of people within the United States to not be able to afford medications essential to their lives. Pharmaceutical companies are taking advantage of the need people have for certain drugs by setting the sale price far higher than it costs to produce. My suggested solution is to make lobbying illegal in the United States so that pharmaceutical companies would not have control over government officials who pass laws to help or hurt the issue of medication pricing. Illegalizing government lobbying will take away the incentive politicians …
Impact Of Whitetail Deer Overpopulation With Hunting On The Decline, Matthew J. Lamprinos
Impact Of Whitetail Deer Overpopulation With Hunting On The Decline, Matthew J. Lamprinos
English Department: Research for Change - Wicked Problems in Our World
The whitetail deer is a key species for Pennsylvania’s forests, but their ecological balance has been disturbed by unregulated growth and urban sprawl. The deer population in Pennsylvania has exploded since the 1880’s causing a wide range of damage on the ecosystem, and humans. To reduce deer populations to sustainable levels, the Pennsylvania Game Commission relies heavily on hunters to dedicate time in the fall to go out and fill the tags the they issue. Hunter participation all around the world is decreasing for a variety of reasons. Fewer hunters out in the field causes revenue losses for the Game …
