Sacra Nouveau: Sacred Iconography Reinterpreted In The Work Of Margaret And Frances Macdonald, Jobeth Cox Apr 2021

Sacra Nouveau: Sacred Iconography Reinterpreted In The Work Of Margaret And Frances Macdonald, Jobeth Cox

Art and Art History Theses

The work of Anglo-Scottish artists Margaret Macdonald Mackintosh (1864-1933) and Frances Macdonald MacNair (1873-1921) went largely uninvestigated until the end of the twentieth century, despite their innovative contributions to the Glasgow School aesthetic. The height of their careers saw high-profile architectural collaborations with Margaret’s husband, the celebrated Charles Rennie Mackintosh, and participation in significant European avant-garde exhibitions of their time. Joint and individual work produced during the Macdonald sisters’ Glasgow School of Art period (1890-1894), and the years immediately after when the two shared a studio in the city, have been recognized by historians of the artists as provocative images …

With Kindest Regards To You And Miss Sparks, Claire E. Kelly

Honors Scholars Collaborative Projects

This work explores the life of a woman, Katherine Josephine Sparks, who lived in Nashville from 1910 to 1993. Vignettes of her life are revealed through the Katherine Sparks Collection at the Nashville Archives, in which over 18,000 items including letters, photographs, memorabilia, and legal documents house parts of her family’s story. Katherine lived an unassuming life, she never married, and she had no children. There is very little documentation of her life left other than what is held in this archival collection. Without the archive, this record would be lost—a small part of history that would go undiscovered and …

Hand In Glove, Calista Ginn Apr 2021

Hand In Glove, Calista Ginn

Honors Scholars Collaborative Projects

Archer Fagan is like any other successful woman in her twenties, with an unorthodox occupation: she’s a new-age cult leader. Most stories about cults distance themselves from their leaders, for good reason: the myth of the mystic is what makes them so enticing. It’s when you get up close that you see their humanity-- their ugliness, their worry, their greed. At the peak of her worldwide success (or infamy, in the eyes of some), she finds herself unsatisfied with everything she’s worked so hard to build: an all-female cult and wellness empire, beloved by regular folks and celebrities alike.

Famously, …

And Everything Nice, Elizabeth Black Apr 2021

And Everything Nice, Elizabeth Black

Honors Scholars Collaborative Projects

Over the last year, due to the pandemic of COVID-19, I have had a novel opportunity to spend much of my time and energy reflecting on my connection to femininity. Across social media platforms, individuals have shared their own personal reflections about gender and this content has led me to think deeply about what femininity and masculinity mean to me. There are feminine norms and behaviors I identify with, and other conventions that I reject. Additionally, I admire forms of feminine expressions, but feel like I neither physically nor mentally can achieve them. The more time I spent with this …

Constructive Criticism: Analyzing And Implementing Student Feedback As A Tutor, Gracie Jo Averett Apr 2021

Constructive Criticism: Analyzing And Implementing Student Feedback As A Tutor, Gracie Jo Averett

Tutor's Column

Writing centers are subject to student feedback as they operate, collecting both negative and positive comments through exit surveys after appointments. This essay analyzes these types of feedback and how tutors and writing centers can use both types of feedback to their advantage when serving their students. Being able to analyze the feedback that they receive can allow a tutor to make adjustments, when needed, to their tutoring process.

Interracial Relations: History And Cultural Identity In The Invention Of Wings, Taylor Hopkins Apr 2021

Interracial Relations: History And Cultural Identity In The Invention Of Wings, Taylor Hopkins

Undergraduate Research and Scholarship Symposium

The historical fiction novel The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd displays a notable relationship between feminist and racial ideals during the nineteenth century. The story is based on the historical figure, Sarah Grimké, an American abolitionist and advocate for women’s rights. Over the course of thirty-five years, the narration alternates between the two main characters: Sarah Grimké and Hetty Handful Grimké, a young slave on the Grimké plantation. The interactions between the two begin when Hetty is presented to Sarah as a personal waiting maid for Sarah’s eleventh birthday. As the story continues, the dynamics between the two …

Mary Todd Lincoln: Duty And Depression, Bella Biancone Apr 2021

Mary Todd Lincoln: Duty And Depression, Bella Biancone

Undergraduate Research and Scholarship Symposium

First Lady Mary Todd Lincoln was perceived by Victorian America as materialistic and unbalanced. Behind the closed doors of the Executive Mansion, however, lie a grief-stricken mother struggling to manage an undiagnosed and untreated mental illness. Her fragile condition was exacerbated with each death of her beloved family. Yet, this First Lady played an integral role in the White House, acting as hostess, advisor to the President, and activist in her own right. She was not a passive bystander as her husband worked tirelessly to preserve the Union, but an active participant in the war effort. Following Abraham Lincoln’s premature …

Songs Of The Sea And The Sailor: Demystifying The Mythology Of British Sailing Culture, Henry Strobel Apr 2021

Songs Of The Sea And The Sailor: Demystifying The Mythology Of British Sailing Culture, Henry Strobel

Undergraduate Research and Scholarship Symposium

Sea shanties have generally been accepted as the main relic of the culture of British sailors: a mythology that permeates the 19th and 20th century describing the harsh, unforgiving and yet in many ways romanticized life at sea. The repertoire of this time was eventually written down and catalogued by folk music collectors such as Cecil J. Sharp, who were hoping to record and preserve the British identity for generations to come. However, in researching the etymology of these songs as well as the first-hand accounts of sailors, there is a significantly greater layer of complexity to this history than …

Erotic Ecology In Ovid's Heroides, Noah Holt Apr 2021

Erotic Ecology In Ovid's Heroides, Noah Holt

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

This project demonstrates that natural imagery in the Heroides is an emotionally charged space that exists as more than just background description. The first chapter explores how descriptions of the pastoral landscape reflect the shifting love affair of Oenone and Paris: when the love is reciprocal, the pastoral landscape is idyllic and peaceful; once Oenone realizes her attempt to win Paris back is futile, the pastoral landscape becomes more antagonistic. Ultimately, Oenone’s rusticitas proves to be incompatible with Paris’ newly acquired cultus, which I suggest can be read as an expression of the opposition between modern refinement and renewal …

The Stories We Tell: Gender-Based Variances In Recovery Narratives, Jessica Mcdaniel Apr 2021

The Stories We Tell: Gender-Based Variances In Recovery Narratives, Jessica Mcdaniel

Master of Arts in American Studies Capstones

Substance-related issues have long been a societal concern, yet there is a dearth of empirical evidence about effective treatments. One of the most prominent methods of resolving substance-related issues, Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), has been criticized for its white, Christian middle-class, heterosexual male provenance. Particularly, the utility of AA for women has been questioned. Yet, many women do find recovery within AA. Therefore, the question becomes less about the fundamental efficacy of AA and more about for whom does AA work. As such, the present study set out to analyze recovery narratives drawn from the primary AA text. The stories of …

The Slow Violence Of Eco-Apocalypse In The Poetry Of José Emilio Pacheco, Niels H. Christensen Apr 2021

The Slow Violence Of Eco-Apocalypse In The Poetry Of José Emilio Pacheco, Niels H. Christensen

Theses and Dissertations

Over the course of his fifty-year career, Mexican writer José Emilio Pacheco has almost habitually written poetry about environmental themes especially those related to pollution, extraction, deforestation, and other related themes of destruction. Simultaneously, his work has engaged with questions of temporality, namely the passing of time and the inherent violence of such questions. In this essay, I examine a selection of Pacheco's poetry from the 1970s to the early 2000s, demonstrating Pacheco's marrying of the two concepts: environmental degradation and time. This marriage results in a provocative synthesis of eco-apocalypse, a phenomenon that details a paradoxical end that never …

From Captive To Captor: Hannah Duston And The Indian Removal Act, Olivia Cronquist Apr 2021

From Captive To Captor: Hannah Duston And The Indian Removal Act, Olivia Cronquist

Theses and Dissertations

In 1697 Massachusetts settler Hannah Duston was taken captive by a group of Abenaki Indians. Duston and her companions escaped captivity by using a tomahawk to kill ten of her captors. Within her captivity narrative, Duston inhabits the role of captor rather than captive, providing a literary framework for reading and understanding the process of Indian Removal in the nineteenth century. Like white captives in the early colonial period, Native Americans in the nineteenth century faced pressure to assimilate, forced marches through unfamiliar territory, and acts of shocking violence like the Wounded Knee Massacre. During this time period, the United …

Processing Nihilism: The Struggle For Valuative Supremacy In Javier MaríAs' Berta Isla, Kristen A. Brimhall Apr 2021

Processing Nihilism: The Struggle For Valuative Supremacy In Javier MaríAs' Berta Isla, Kristen A. Brimhall

Theses and Dissertations

Nihilism is a popular and heavily studied topic which is prominently displayed in Javier Marías' novel Berta Isla. In this article, both Nietzschean and Heideggerian concepts of nihilism will be identified and analyzed within the context of Marías's novel. Through textual analysis, the origin of nihilism will be explored as it relates to the will to power and valuative schema of the individual. It will be suggested that nihilism stems from valuative thinking induced by the herd-mentality of a community and that the fulfillment of such is the acceptance of absolute truth grounded in being and becoming.

Immunization Verification At Christian Camps, Katherine Stacey Apr 2021

Immunization Verification At Christian Camps, Katherine Stacey

Senior Honors Theses

No standard exists among Christian camps regarding immunization verification for program participants. The best practice for Christian camps regarding immunization verification is debated because of religious reasons, camper and staff safety, and state mandates. This research examines the current practice of Christian Camp and Conference Association (CCCA) affiliated camps regarding immunization verification. It was conducted by emailing a seven-question survey to over 700 CCCA camps. Just over 100 camps responded. The study found that roughly two-thirds of CCCA camps practice no method of immunization verification. In response to this result, the researchers propose a best practice for Christian camps regarding …

Systematic Visuo-Textual Analysis: A Framework For Analysing Visual And Textual Data, Nicole Brown, Jo Collins Apr 2021

Systematic Visuo-Textual Analysis: A Framework For Analysing Visual And Textual Data, Nicole Brown, Jo Collins

The Qualitative Report

As qualitative research has evolved, researchers now often combine interviews with the production of photographs, artefacts, collages, maps or drawings and the like. However, in practice, the artefacts produced are used to eliciting experiences and stimulating conversations rather than as data, per se, which is often due to the lack of guidelines for how to deal with the artefacts as data in a systematic analytical process. In this article, we present the Systematic Visuo-Textual Analysis, a framework developed to provide much-needed support for qualitative researchers in analysing artefacts in combination with interviews. Drawing on existing frameworks for visual and textual …

Rebecca DeYoung has extensively researched the topic of sin, and while sin and rebellion might not seem like the most encouraging topics, we hope you’ll see in this conversation that as we grow in awareness of our brokenness, we only grow in our recognition and awe of God’s grace to us despite our sin! We pray that as you listen to this conversation you come to a deeper understanding of what God has rescued us from.

In With A Runny Nose, Out In A Body Bag: Why Is It So Difficult For Black Women To Leave The Hospital Alive?, Chelsea Carter

Scholars Week

In the Black community, there is an unspoken understanding about Black people going to the doctor with a runny nose, and leaving in a body bag. A recent article published by The Oprah Magazine demonstrates that racism is rampant in the United States healthcare system, and it is taking the lives of Black women at an alarmingly disproportionate rate (Stallings, 2018). When seeking medical treatment, many Black women are at the mercy of doctors who possess an implicit bias against Black women. Simply put, implicit bias describes the phenomenon in which people behave and treat others based on negative preconceptions …

The Stillness In Time: A Reflective Narrative, Molly Heller

KUCC -- Kutztown University Composition Conference

This piece is a narrative that spans just about four and a half pages (double spaced). It describes a trip to my former middle school and all of the memories that flood back with it by taking the reader on a mental tour of the building. Written in first person, it provides a sense of my individual middle school experience in a way that feels relatable and personal. Throughout the piece, I make reference to the parallels and differences between my life in quarantine and my life in middle school.
