B'Ars And Catamounts: A Study Of Davy Crockett Through Genre And Medium, Jack Fieweger Apr 2021

B'Ars And Catamounts: A Study Of Davy Crockett Through Genre And Medium, Jack Fieweger

Honors Theses

This project seeks to investigate and discuss the changes and variations that have occurred to the mythology of David Crockett over the course of time. Initially appearing as a literary character in 1833, the likeness of Crockett has appeared in a myriad of different texts including: biographies, almanacs, plays, dime novels, comics, television shows, and films. The project attempts to discern how these different iterations of medium and genre altered the mythology of David Crockett. In order to methodologically understand these changes, this project makes use of W.T. Lhamon’s concept known as the Lore Cycle. Lhamon identified that lore diffuses …

Xenophobia In The Covid-19 Era, Joanne Jeya Apr 2021

Xenophobia In The Covid-19 Era, Joanne Jeya

Honors Theses

COVID-19 has altered people's daily lives across the globe and heightened tensions in response to changing economic, social, and political conditions. In the United States, xenophobia has seemingly escalated in the COVID-19 era, particularly towards Asians and people of Asian descent. The assumed reasoning for this rise in anti-Asian sentiment is tied to the presumed origins of the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome‐Coronavirus‐2 (SARS-CoV-2) virus, first detected in Wuhan, China, prompting some to initially call the disease the Wuhan or Chinese virus, among other racialized terms like the "Kung-flu." It remains to be seen if xenophobic acts have increased throughout the …

The Trans Issue, Richard C. Crepeau Apr 2021

The Trans Issue, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

The first time that I remember the issue of gender and sport being raised was sometime in the 1960s when charges surfaced at the Olympics concerning the East German women’s track and field team. Their success led some in the west, especially the Americans, to charge that some female athletes from East Germany and the Soviet Union were, in fact, males. For the most part, I dismissed these claims as the complaints of bad losers. Others treated the charges more seriously, and sex tests came to the European Games in 1966 and the Olympic Games in 1968.

On The Nature Of Collaboration, John Walker Apr 2021

On The Nature Of Collaboration, John Walker

Honors Theses

The senior recital is in and of itself a Capstone project in the Department of Music—a culmination of one’s undergraduate years. Preparation of such a program, especially a collaborative recital with a peer, demands much of a voice student’s attention. However, the nature of this preparation is a relative unknown among the non-musical spaces of academia. Presented with an opportunity to develop my senior recital with Brittany Parry, a student of the new Master of Music in Collaborative Piano, I chose to reflect upon our novelty recital experience in this Capstone paper. The energy we devoted to our rehearsals and …

Pollen-Vegetation Relationships In Upper Tampa Bay, Jaime E. Zolik Apr 2021

Pollen-Vegetation Relationships In Upper Tampa Bay, Jaime E. Zolik

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Archaeological and environmental studies reveal prehistoric human-environmental interactions and resolve baseline conditions for estuaries. Paleoecological proxies, such as pollen, aid archeologists in investigating past vegetation dynamics and human impacts. An issue with collecting this information today is that most present-day estuaries in Tampa Bay have been succeeded by mangrove communities and do not represent baseline vegetation dynamics. This is believed to be the consequences of widespread mosquito ditching. As a result of this, the once complex mangrove, salt marsh, juncus marsh, salt prairie, and coastal upland mosaics were converted to monodominant mangrove forests. Upper Tampa Bay (UTB) park contains some …

Pendekatan Konsep Ta’Awun Dalam Siyar Terhadap Konflik Tumpang Tindih Kedaulatan Wilayah Udara Dan Flight Information Region: Alternatif Penyelesaian Kasus Tumpang Tindih Wilyah Udara Indonesia Dan Flight Information Region Singapura, Djarot Dimas Achmad Andaru

Journal of Islamic Law Studies

Islamic law as a law that applies universally, has governed relations between people and between state institutions that cross national borders. One of the principles of international law or Siyar in Islam is the principle of ta'awun, which is a principle of cooperation or help between countries to achieve common good. Conflicts of interest in overlapping air sovereignty territories and the Flight Information Region between Indonesia and Singapore are one example of the disharmony of the practice of modern international cooperation in the management of air and air navigation safety, which is based on an instrument of international cooperation. The …

Jonathan C. Gibbs: Florida's Only Negro Cabinet Member, Joe M. Richardson Apr 2021

Jonathan C. Gibbs: Florida's Only Negro Cabinet Member, Joe M. Richardson

Florida Historical Quarterly

Historians have contended that during the period of Reconstruction when the Republican party dominated the political stage in Florida, the state was controlled by incompetent, illiterate, and venal Negroes. A critical examination of primary sources, however, shows that this is not a valid conception. Negro office holders were always in a decided minority and among those who held office on the state and local level there were many capable men. The best example of a Florida Negro who disproves the stereotyped freedman politician is Jonathan C. Gibbs, one of the best educated and most cultured persons holding a political office.

Memoir Of A West Pointer In Saint Augustine: 1824-1826, Cecil D. Eby, Jr.

Florida Historical Quarterly

In May, 1824, Second Lieutenant Alfred Beckley of the Fourth Artillery, United States Army, reported for duty at Fort Marion, St. Augustine, Florida, where he remained until April, 1826. He was green and untried - a twenty-two year old West Pointer who had graduated ninth in the Class of 1823- and except for his aversion to “French brandy” and “Old Sledge,” he was perhaps a typical example of the officer-gentleman that was the backbone of the peacetime army of that time. Born in Washington City in 1802, Beckley could recall as guests in his home such dignitaries as Joel Barlow, …

Fraud And Intimidation In The Florida Election Of 1876, Jerrell H. Shofner Apr 2021

Fraud And Intimidation In The Florida Election Of 1876, Jerrell H. Shofner

Florida Historical Quarterly

The Presidential Election of 1876 was the most controversial election in American history. It is remembered because of the extended dispute over its outcome and because it has since been regarded as the end of Reconstruction in the South. The uncertain outcome was due to duplicate electoral certificates from Florida, South Carolina, and Louisiana. These were the only Southern states which still had Republican governors. By various combinations of fraud and violence, both Democratic and Republican parties in these three states had managed to secure electoral certificates for their respective presidential candidates. Samuel J. Tilden, the Democratic candidate, received 184 …
