Don’T Die A Woman If You Want Your Own Way: Idealization Of Florentine Noblewomen Through Posthumous Renaissance Portraiture, Asha Fletcher-Irwin

Art History Senior Papers

Renaissance women’s portraiture served a narrative purpose for the patron, always informed by whether the painting’s subject was alive at the time of painting. My own interest in posthumous portraiture came from a single sentence in renowned Renaissance scholar Patricia Simons’ article on the identification of Tornabuoni women in the Santa Maria Novella. She wrote of Ghirlandaio’s fresco of Giovanna Tornabouni, painted after her death, in which he copied a profile portrait done during her lifetime but decided to further idealize it.[1] Renaissance portraiture was never accidental, and female Florentine portraiture of the era was particularly riddled with symbolism. …

Life Along The Color Line In Little Rock: An Archeological Investigation Of Two Sites On South Arch Street, Devin Sorrows Apr 2021

Life Along The Color Line In Little Rock: An Archeological Investigation Of Two Sites On South Arch Street, Devin Sorrows

Theses and Dissertations

The recent unearthing of two archeological sites in Little Rock, Arkansas revealed objects imbued with symbolism, complexity, and memory. The people who left these objects behind were residents of the West Ninth Street neighborhood, an epicenter of African American social and economic activity in central Arkansas from the middle nineteenth through the late twentieth centuries. Utilizing multidisciplinary avenues, including W.E.B. Du Bois’ metaphor of the color line, archeology, and extensive archival research, this thesis investigated the material culture of the two sites. The historic record provided important contextual elements to the stories of the Arch Street residents, while the archeological …

Metamorphosis: An Exploration Of Transformation In Artmaking, Scarlet Sevits Apr 2021

Metamorphosis: An Exploration Of Transformation In Artmaking, Scarlet Sevits

Honors Projects

My creative project begins with wanting to know how the art making process relates to the process of metamorphosis and the extent to which this process can achieve realism. To explore this question, I chose related subject matter that is the female mythological figures of Ovid’s epic poem Metamorphoses who undergo transformation of the human body. I also chose a methodology that relates to my question. The acts of painting and writing can be explored as processes of transformation and both processes attempt to convince the viewer or reader of reality: the reality of a living figure or the emotional …

(1) The groovebox is equipped for both audio recording and live performance, both of which are analyzed in this research. The machine has many innovative elements that have carried over into modern music technology as well as some limitations that have since been left behind. This study acts as a historical evaluation of the growth and improvements …
