In Memoriam: Richard C. West, Janet Brennan Croft

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

Richard C. West (1944-2020) was one of the pioneers of serious Tolkien scholarship. He was the founder of the Tolkien Society at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. West is known particularly for his invaluable resource Tolkien Criticism: An Annotated Checklist. Among West’s other scholarly works, his 1975 essay, “The Interlace Structure of The Lord of the Rings” (in Jared Lobdell’s collection A Tolkien Compass) has proven to have particularly long-lasting impact. West had a long affiliation with the Mythopoeic Society.

Eat Like A White Man: Meat-Eating, Masculinity, And Neo-Colonialism, Saphronia Carson Apr 2021

Eat Like A White Man: Meat-Eating, Masculinity, And Neo-Colonialism, Saphronia Carson

The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal

Gender Studies scholarship has argued that one significant way contemporary hegemonic masculinities are constructed and reinforced is through meat consumption. Conversely, plant-based diets such as veganism and vegetarianism are considered feminine. This paper builds on an emerging body of research that traces this gendering of meat and plant-based diets to British colonialism in India. Drawing on ecofeminist and postcolonial theory, it shows how British colonizers feminized Indian dietary cultures, specifically Hindu vegetarian diets, to reinforce their own sense of masculinity. Through critical analyses of marketing and media, it demonstrates how these colonial gendered food images continue to populate contemporary imaginations. …

Sporting Houses, Soiled Doves, And Bad Repute: Houses Of Ill Fame In Marquette, 1870-1943, Emily Tinder Apr 2021

Sporting Houses, Soiled Doves, And Bad Repute: Houses Of Ill Fame In Marquette, 1870-1943, Emily Tinder

Upper Country: A Journal of the Lake Superior Region

Within the male-dominated economic landscape of Marquette's founding era, many women turned to the illicit business of selling sex to make a living. In the absence of self-created primary sources, court case records and newspaper accounts dating between 1870 and 1943 reveal small pieces of the lives of dozens of such women. Yet while the stories of underground miners and northwoods lumberjacks have been studied in detail, these sex workers have been ignored and forgotten almost entirely; a broader social history, without moral bias, can account for many of the women who worked alongside the men who dominate our historical …

Italian Immigrants In The Lake Superior Basin, Russell Magnaghi

Upper Country: A Journal of the Lake Superior Region

From 1870 through 1920 hundreds of thousands of Italians arrived in the United States and Canada seeking economic opportunity and better lives. They were attracted to cities of the Midwest – Minneapolis-St. Paul, Chicago, Milwaukee, Detroit, Cleveland – and eastern Canada – Montréal and Toronto -- where as cheap labor they found jobs in factories, railroads, urban construction, and service businesses and created new lives in the Midwest.

Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Tells Your Story? A Marxist Analysis Of "Hamilton" And Its Relationship To The Broadway Economic System, Alana Ritt Apr 2021

Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Tells Your Story? A Marxist Analysis Of "Hamilton" And Its Relationship To The Broadway Economic System, Alana Ritt

Honors Projects

Lin-Manuel Miranda’s mega-hit Hamilton: An American Musical has been both a critical and academic darling since its premiere in 2015. A historical retelling of America’s inception through the eyes of an oft-ignored founding father, the musical weaves together a diverse cast and hip-hop musical stylings in order to tell the story of “America then, as told by America now.” While many critics and scholars alike have praised the musical for putting an exciting and accessible twist to American history, others have argued that the musical is not nearly as “revolutionary” as it claims to be. This essay is designed to …

There is a look into why the text is being studied, what alchemy is, what literature is out there, why the narrative perspective lens was chosen, and the actual analysis. From Criticism To Complicity And Back Again: Criticality, Audience, And Desire In The Art Of Sherrie Levine And Jeff Koons, Kelly L. Jost

Theses and Dissertations

Despite strong similarities in Sherrie Levine’s and Jeff Koons’s art, a comparative exploration of their work has never been undertaken. To draw a comparison between Levine and Koons, while redressing the critical and public perception of their art, I reconsider the nature of three pivotal concepts—criticality, audience, and desire.

Ñe Juon Enaaj Jeḷā Kōkḷaḷ Eban Peḷọk: Teaching Marshallese Immigrants, Riley Post

Honors Projects

Under the Compact of the Free Association (1983) treaties, Marshallese immigrants are free to live and work indefinitely without visas; however, American schools and educators have not been equipped with data and resources that can be used to address the cultural and linguistic diversity of their new neighbors. Therefore, the research question considers which resources and practices can help Marshallese immigrants succeed academically within the American education system. The findings, supplemented by the perspectives of local Marshall Islanders, suggest that educators need increased awareness of important cultural differences and further develop their cultural competency. Language teachers in particular may also …
