Prominent Biblical Themes During The Revolutionary War, Jacob Jones Apr 2021

Prominent Biblical Themes During The Revolutionary War, Jacob Jones

Tenor of Our Times

Ever since humanity has gone to war with itself, both sides of the conflict often times have used respective religious texts to argue that their god or gods were on their side and against their opponents. Saint Augustine promulgated this idea further in his theory of Just War. Colonists during the American Revolution were not exempt from this tendency but participated fully in it. Because of their Calvinistic leanings, influenced by Edwards and the First Great Awakening, North American colonists frequently referenced their own Divine text, the Bible, and went to Sacred Scripture to prove to their side that America …

Rumors of the scheme – eventually dubbed the “Black Sox Scandal” – circulated around Major League Baseball through the 1920 season until a trial was finally called against the accused players.

At the completion of the trial in 1921, the jury found …

In that space of uncertainty, eleven characters navigate discoveries, news, and realities that they must learn to accept and move forward with. In short, episodic scenes, the eleven characters that we meet along the way introduce and momentarily resolve their struggles in the same time we have with them. The tiny …

Carpe Diem And Consolation: Horace's Imitation And Manipulation Of Greek Lyric Models, Ruth Wilmot

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

This thesis examines the influence of Greek lyric poetry, primarily Sappho and Alcaeus, on Horace’s carpe diem poems. Horace weaves Greek lyric themes and meters into his poetry. He also imitates the structure of alternation scenes and injunction passed down in the lyric tradition from the poet Archilochus. However, Horace distinguishes himself by adding uniquely Roman elements and varying the tones of his speaker. He utilizes the variety of tones or perspectives in order to highlight the proper response to death, enjoying the symposium.

The Seen And The Known, The Visible And The Invisible, Jeff Wasch Apr 2021

The Seen And The Known, The Visible And The Invisible, Jeff Wasch

Philosophy Student Work

In this project I make the argument that we never really see what we know. What I have found is that there are two fundamentally different kinds of content which make up experience. The first kind of content is the phenomenological content of experience. This content is purely passive and is constructed by our sensory organs. In short, phenomenological content constructs a perceptual field which is what is seen. The second kind of content is the semantic content of experience. This content is deployed by our conceptual and linguistic capabilities which stems from the fact that humans are fundamentally social, …

Virtue, Agency, And The Silence Of Reasons, Abhi Kalpeshkumar Ruparelia Apr 2021

Virtue, Agency, And The Silence Of Reasons, Abhi Kalpeshkumar Ruparelia

Honors Theses

In this essay, I argue that John McDowell’s highly influential conception of Aristotelian virtue, which I refer to as the “silencing” thesis, presents us with a philosophically unattractive picture of virtuous agency. I begin by summarizing McDowell’s view in the context of the philosophical problem that he attempts to solve, namely the virtue/continence distinction. Next, I raise an initial objection against McDowell’s view. I argue that the silencing thesis commits us to a psychologically implausible understanding of virtuous agency. I then go on to provide a potential response to my criticism on McDowell’s behalf and argue against it. Finally, I …

Comparing Lithic Artifacts And Native American Activity At Stark Farm, An Early Contact Period Site In Northeast Mississippi, Gillian Steeno Apr 2021

Comparing Lithic Artifacts And Native American Activity At Stark Farm, An Early Contact Period Site In Northeast Mississippi, Gillian Steeno

Honors Theses

Supposed ancestors of the modern-day Chickasaw, the occupants of Stark Farm inhabited the area known today as Starkville, Mississippi. These Native American peoples left behind archaeological evidence of their occupation, especially in the form of large midden-filled basins. In order to investigate these refuse pits, a lithic analysis was completed using stone typology in order to infer supposed activities. Each of the five contexts are compared to each other to determine which assemblages have similar elements and which ones prove to be unusual in comparison. Through this stone tool analysis, domestic and non-domestic activities and areas in the site can …

Disparities In Access To Assisted Reproductive Technology Among Hispanic Women In The United States, Madison Gallagher Apr 2021

Disparities In Access To Assisted Reproductive Technology Among Hispanic Women In The United States, Madison Gallagher

Honors Thesis

Infertility is a health problem that affects approximately 7 million women in the United States (Ethics Committee of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, 2015). Due to the high costs of reproductive medicine and infertility treatment, these services tend to be expensive and have limited accessibility without full insurance coverage. Emerging literature outlines the disparities in access to proper treatment for reproductive complications. These existing studies highlight that many minority populations in the United States experience increased challenges regarding access to reproductive medicine and infertility treatment. Among these minority groups are Hispanic women, who are more likely to require reproductive …
