Carlos Castaneda (1925-1998): Reading Between His Lines, A Summary Judgment, Jay C. Fikes Phd Apr 2021

Carlos Castaneda (1925-1998): Reading Between His Lines, A Summary Judgment, Jay C. Fikes Phd

The International Journal of Ecopsychology (IJE)

Don Juan is a fictional character. Yaqui in Sonora and Arizona have no history of peyote rituals. These two facts help explain why, by 1975, Castaneda’s followers were seeking shamans comparable to Don Juan among the Huichol of Mexico. In recent years peyote tourists have invaded the sacred land where Huichol venerate the peyote spirit. The rising tide of tourists in that area is rapidly depleting peyote and has stimulated Mexican authorities to incarcerate Huichol peyote hunters (Fikes, 1993; 2013). In the early 1990s Castaneda created a cult, Tensegrity, which taught disciples stylized movements combining “tai chi, modern dance and …

Plastic Shamans, Intellectual Colonialism And Intellectual Appropriation In New Age Movements, Joseba I. Arregi Phd Apr 2021

Plastic Shamans, Intellectual Colonialism And Intellectual Appropriation In New Age Movements, Joseba I. Arregi Phd

The International Journal of Ecopsychology (IJE)

The reality of colonialism plagues indigenous populations and continues into the present, generating new scenarios of oppression. This new oppression is tied to so-called alternative models of progress, to the success of sustainable development, and to the recognition of the importance of biodiversity in the 21st Century. This work presents three processes of biological and cultural appropriation which constitute a new chapter in the long history of colonial aggression and indigenous resistance.

Covid-19 And Challenges To The Traditional Understanding Of Individual Medical Autonomy, Callon A. Green Apr 2021

Covid-19 And Challenges To The Traditional Understanding Of Individual Medical Autonomy, Callon A. Green

Honors Theses

Throughout history, vaccines have provided the human population with the ability to combat dangerous illnesses and avoid preventable suffering. Despite the benefits vaccines provide to the public health of the United States, anti-vaccination sentiment and resistance to vaccine uptake are still prevalent in the modern day. As the COVID-19 pandemic has developed into a major public health crisis that can be controlled through vaccination, the issues underlying vaccine resistance are becoming more critical to return to normal life. Using COVID-19 as a case study, it is evident that the individual choice to deny vaccination can have consequences on the health …

More Than Sectarianism: How Have State And Non-State Institutions Used Violence To Form The Current Iraqi State And What Is The Effect?, Caitlyn Perkins

Honors Theses

This thesis examines the role of violence in Iraq in establishing the current Iraqi state. My chapters provide historical and theoretical context to the subject before getting into the analysis. The goal of this thesis is to show that violence in Iraq is not only caused by sectarian differences, but has been used and influenced by leaders, outside governments, and non-state institutions for personal gain and political goals at the cost of the Iraqi people.

“Wrestling With The Angels”: The Limits Of Postcolonial Performativity, Antonette Talaue Arogo Apr 2021

“Wrestling With The Angels”: The Limits Of Postcolonial Performativity, Antonette Talaue Arogo

Akda: The Asian Journal of Literature, Culture, Performance

This paper examines the current state of postcolonialism in the Philippines, represented by the critical works of J. Neil C. Garcia. It argues that the present privileging of difference in the mode of postcolonial (hybrid) performativity, as Garcia theorizes the intersection of postcolonialism and queer theory, creates the urgency for a re-examination of its denigrated other, sameness. By first delineating the contours of Garcia’s framework, it explains how hybridity is an inadequate setting for the understanding of salient and necessary but under-elaborated elements of postcolonial thought, namely, voluntarism or intentionality and universalism, the very objects of Garcia’s critique. The paper …

Some Notes On The Semerap Dialect Of Kerinci And Its Historical Development, Ernanda Ernanda Apr 2021

Some Notes On The Semerap Dialect Of Kerinci And Its Historical Development, Ernanda Ernanda

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

This article investigates the historical development of a hitherto undescribed Kerinci variety, the Semerap dialect, from a comparative Malayic perspective. The morphophonological characteristics of Kerinci languages are unusual within the Austronesian language family. This preliminary study, therefore, pays special attention to the characteristic four-way split of the historical root- final *V(C)# in Semerap lexemes: absolute, oblique, K-words, and G-words. Like other Kerinci varieties, the Semerap dialect features a type of phonological word-shape alternation, generally known as “phrasal alternation”, which also impacts on its syntax. This alternation (absolute vs. oblique) is determined by the syntactic position of the root, but also …

South Borneo As An Ancient Sprachbund Area, Alexander Adelaar Apr 2021

South Borneo As An Ancient Sprachbund Area, Alexander Adelaar

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

In South and Central Kalimantan (southern Borneo) there are some unusual linguistic features shared among languages which are adjacent but do not belong to the same genetic linguistic subgroups. These languages are predominantly Banjar Malay (a Malayic language), Ngaju (a West Barito language), and Ma’anyan (a Southeast Barito language). The same features also appear to some degree in Malagasy, a Southeast Barito language in East Africa. The shared linguistic features are the following ones: a grammaticalized form of the originally Malay noun buah ‘fruit’ expressing affectedness, nasal spreading in which N- not only nasalizes the onset of the first syllable …

Iban As A Koine Language In Sarawak, Chong Shin Apr 2021

Iban As A Koine Language In Sarawak, Chong Shin

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

This article attempts to delineate the issue of linguistic homogeny in Iban variants in Sarawak (Malaysia). In brief, the Iban speakers are claimed to descend from Upper Kapuas watershed, Western Kalimantan (Indonesia). Based on local traditions and oral materials, this ethnic group began to move out from Kapuas watershed and penetrate into Sarawak in sixteenth century. After several generations, they expanded to become the major ethnic group in the state. Several recent studies show that the number of ethnic Ibans in West Kalimantan is fairly small and the distribution of Iban communities often displays a pattern of distant pockets or …

Vowel Fronting, Raising, And Backing In Luzon And North-Central Sulawesi, Jason William Lobel Apr 2021

Vowel Fronting, Raising, And Backing In Luzon And North-Central Sulawesi, Jason William Lobel

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

This article presents an overview of four shifts – low vowel fronting, low vowel backing, back vowel fronting, and mid vowel raising – found in a number of languages on or near the Pacific coast of Luzon in the Philippines and in north- central Sulawesi in Indonesia. A more extensive illustration of low vowel fronting is given for Umiray Dumaget than has previously been made available, and a second, sporadic correspondence in Umiray Dumaget is shown to be only irregular and unconditioned. Interactions with Philippine-type morphology are also shown to result in synchronically productive alternations in Umiray Dumaget and several …

The Particle Ma In Old Sundanese, Aditia Gunawan, Evi Fuji Fauziyah

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

This article will analyse the distribution of the particle ma in Old Sundanese texts. Based on an examination of fifteen Old Sundanese texts (two inscriptions, eight prose texts, and five poems), we have identified 730 occurrences of ma. We have selected several examples which represent the range of its grammatical functions in sentences. Our observations are as follows: (1) ma not only appears in direct dialogues, but also in narrative texts, both prose and verse; (2) ma functions as a copula in nominal sentences, connecting subject and predicate; (3) in conditional clauses containing the conjunction lamun, ma has a function …

Indonesian Discourse Particles In Conversations And Written Text, David-M Karàj

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

The aim of the present paper is an analysis of four most frequent Colloquial Indonesian discourse particles (lho, kok, sih and dong) and the comparison of their occurrences in both spontaneous spoken conversations as well as in written texts (articles from a youth magazine). The author's motivation for choosing the terms discourse particles (instead of for example pragmatic particles) is explained and a new definition of the phenomenon is proposed. First the particles' meanings as given in various dictionaries are presented, it is followed by examples from spontaneous conversations. Next, examples from written text are given, followed by an analysis …

Crossed Control Revisited; The Structure And Interpretations Of "Want" And So On + Passive Verb In Malay/Indonesian, Hiroki Nomoto Apr 2021

Crossed Control Revisited; The Structure And Interpretations Of "Want" And So On + Passive Verb In Malay/Indonesian, Hiroki Nomoto

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

In Malay/Indonesian, when certain predicates such as "want" are followed by a passive verb, an ambiguity arises about who has the desire and other attitudes in question. The attitude-holder can be either the surface subject or the passive agent. This article critically assesses the data and claims presented in three recent studies (Mike Berger 2019; Paul Kroeger and Kristen Frazier 2020; Helen Jeoung 2020) through consideration of additional data. It shows that the ambiguity is empirically robust, contrary to the doubts expressed by Jeoung, and that the restructuring analysis advocated by the latter two studies has problems with its primary …

Reciprocality In Papuan Malay, Yusuf Sawaki Apr 2021

Reciprocality In Papuan Malay, Yusuf Sawaki

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

Reciprocality, also known as reciprocal situation or reciprocal constructions, constitutes an expression which describes both the forms and meaning of an activity embodying a mutual relation. Papuan Malay, a pidginized lingua franca in Western New Guinea, has three types of constructions expressing reciprocality: lexical reciprocals, prototypical syntactic reciprocals with the baku construction, and syntactic reciprocals with the discontinuous satu... satu construction. Some additional constructions are considered to be reciprocal-like. These reciprocal constructions vary in their argument structure and valence operations. In argument structure, most constructions allow two kinds of argument structure: Type 1, which takes only a subject argument, and …

The Coming And Going Of "Come" And "Go"; Multi-Verb Directional Motion Constructions In Surinamese Javanese, Sophie Villerius Apr 2021

The Coming And Going Of "Come" And "Go"; Multi-Verb Directional Motion Constructions In Surinamese Javanese, Sophie Villerius

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

This article examines multi-verb directional motion constructions in Surinamese Javanese, a heritage language undergoing structural influence from Dutch and Sranantongo. These are constructions which express 'direction away' by means of a V2 lunga 'go away'. They are more frequent - and used with more different V1s - than in Indonesian Javanese, the baseline. The frequency change is a pattern change, a result of cross-linguistic transfer from Sranantongo, in which multi-verb constructions to express 'direction away' are very frequent. The extension of the usage contexts to more V1s is a form of semantic extension, and it is the first stage of …

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

Researchers use different approaches when collecting and managing primary language materials during fieldwork. Yet it is important that this work is done in a transparent way, so that it can be used by other researchers, who might have other aims, as well as by the speaker community who might want to use or take note of the collected materials. In this article we use our research experience in language data collection in and around Indonesia in fieldwork projects of three kinds: descriptive fieldwork, linguistic surveys, and projects investigating language contact. Our aim is to provide an introductory and practical guide …

The Surviving Sunset Of Manila Bay And The Ethics Of Environmental Justice In Philippine Ecopoetry, Rina Garcia Chua Apr 2021

The Surviving Sunset Of Manila Bay And The Ethics Of Environmental Justice In Philippine Ecopoetry, Rina Garcia Chua

Akda: The Asian Journal of Literature, Culture, Performance

The Philippines, a country rich with natural resources, has taken steps to preserve its environmental megadiversity through the government’s existing environmental laws. However, reality seems to show a glaring disparity between what is being protected and what is being abused. The question is: what is fair to all? This paper’s primary purpose is to explore the aesthetics of local ecopoetry to discover whether the representation of environmental justice in literature can promote ecological fairness in the Third World. Using Hume’s concept of aesthetics to explore the inconsistency between the environmental laws and the message of the selected ecopoems, this study …

Pandang Dunia: Penentu Kekuatan Dan Perubahan Tradisi Masyarakat Tradisional, Johanis Putaratama Kamuri

Paradigma: Jurnal Kajian Budaya

Traditional society is a society that is strongly influenced by tradition. However, the fact is a society can also change such strong tradition. This research aims to understand the driving force that allows the influence of tradition and changes in traditions by traditional societies. Through a systematic review of relevant literature, this research complements Giddens' structuration theory with MacIntyre's thoughts about cultural components that make up the cognitive structure and shows that worldview - a virtual structure in cognition that corresponds to the structure of society - is the force that determines the influence and change of traditions. Therefore, different …
