When The Legend Becomes Fact, Print The Legend, Michael Farinelli May 2021

When The Legend Becomes Fact, Print The Legend, Michael Farinelli

COD Library Student Research and Award Symposium

For this paper, I talked about how directors John Ford and Howard Hawks impacted the acting career of legendary actor John Wayne. I discuss how Wayne rose to prominence in Ford's film Stagecoach in 1939, but how Hawks was the one to take his acting to another level by giving his characters more depth. Ford and Hawks essentially "talked" amongst each other through Wayne and made him into this greater idea with their westerns.

"Susanoo Annotated", Samuel Bostwick

COD Library Student Research and Award Symposium

For this project, I opted to take a deep dive into a religious culture I was not familiar with, namely, Shinto. To demonstrate my knowledge on the subject, I decided on annotating one of the myths of the religion; I selected the myth of Susanoo slaying the Orochi from the Shinto chronicle known as the Kojiki. The citations are presented in MLA format, obtained largely from the College of DuPage's library databases.

Cupid & Psyche, Mars Pinkelman, Luna Shunk, Leo Grabowski-Grant May 2021

Cupid & Psyche, Mars Pinkelman, Luna Shunk, Leo Grabowski-Grant

COD Library Student Research and Award Symposium

The Tale of Cupid and Psyche was a research topic easily curated by the three of us. We as a collective decided upon which rendition of the story we would like to reference from, as well as represent details from other renditions that fit our analysis. We all had specific details in mind that we wanted to discuss and represent, specifically Cupid's relation to Venus as well as Psyche's butterfly wings. Before we began conversing on ideas about individual topics, we all discussed what the story meant to us, and why we wanted to research it. Our biggest inspiration was …

The Women Of Wrath, Sylvia Morna Freitas, Erinique Robinson, Bella Ruiz

COD Library Student Research and Award Symposium

Our group decided that we wanted to research the Ancient Greek myths of Pandora, the Harpies, the Fates, and the Furies to discover what these mythological figures stood for in the eyes of the Ancient Greeks. Once our research in our respective topics was complete, we came back together to look for comparisons between our separate figures, and the similarities we found eventually led us to the name of our project: The Women of Wrath.

Void, Beth Berg May 2021

Void, Beth Berg

COD Library Student Research and Award Symposium

Void is a proposed exhibition that collects modern and contemporary artworks that surround the idea of being nothing and something at the same time. It is full of pieces of art that are paradoxes, unorthodox in their creation or being, who at first glance may look like they have nothing to say, but at the same time, are saying everything. They are filled to the brim with unknowns, dark corners, empty spaces; places where you, as the viewer, are allowed and encouraged to step in, to fill in that silence, and occupy that space yourself.

Evaluating Microfinance And The Potential To Economically Empower Women In The Sacred Valley Of Peru, Allison Mcnamara May 2021

Evaluating Microfinance And The Potential To Economically Empower Women In The Sacred Valley Of Peru, Allison Mcnamara

CISLA Senior Integrative Projects

In the past 30 years, microfinance loans have become a highly popular strategy to reduce poverty and economically empower people in developing countries. Women in particular have become the primary recipients of microfinance loans. However, recent studies show that the loans only have short-term benefits, and ultimately contribute to the indebtedness of the Global South. This paper studies the effectiveness of microfinance loans in the Sacred Valley of Peru (Cusco), and their ability, or lack thereof, to economically empower women in this region.

In a city torn apart by racial tension, Damien Cavalieri is an adolescent without a tribe. His mother -who pines for the 1950s Brooklyn Italian community she grew up in- fears he lacks commitment to his heritage. Complicating matters, his efforts to make friends and date girls outside of the Italian community are thwarted time and again by circumstances beyond his control. When a tragic accident shakes Damien to his core, he begins a journey of self-discovery that will lead him to Italy, where …

Hunger, Capitalism, And Modern Gothic Literature, Becky Tynan May 2021

Hunger, Capitalism, And Modern Gothic Literature, Becky Tynan

Honors Program Theses and Projects

In Ireland, the Great Famine of the 1840s caused not only hunger and starvation, but also diseases, emigration, and a rupture in the social framework. Many social critics of the time argued that a lack of food came from an imbalance in society between those who could afford to eat and those who could not. Hunger was described as a disease because British colonial society depended on feeding citizens from its economic and political menu. Irish people under British landlords lacked the ability to own land outright and this supported an inequality in land ownership that in turn affected government …

Honors Program Theses and Projects

Everyday Trauma: Narrativizing The Self In Chris Ware’S Graphic Novels, Jacob Bibeault May 2021

Everyday Trauma: Narrativizing The Self In Chris Ware’S Graphic Novels, Jacob Bibeault

Honors Program Theses and Projects

The term “graphic novel”—that is, a book-length narrative that employs the comics medium to tell its story—has entered into the vocabulary of comics enthusiasts and readers alike. But, despite the popularity of contemporary graphic novels, many graphic novelists began their careers writing underground comics that garnered little mainstream attention.

Site Catchment Analysis Of The Middleborough Little League Site, Christine Leigh Paquette May 2021

Site Catchment Analysis Of The Middleborough Little League Site, Christine Leigh Paquette

Honors Program Theses and Projects

The Middleborough Little League Site in Middleborough, MA has undergone all phases of archaeological investigation, yielding nearly 70,000 artifacts and debitage that enhance our knowledge and understanding of the pre-historic past. This site is unique for its amount of ceremonial objects recovered, more than any other site in southeastern Massachusetts. Many artifacts of this site’s assemblage are made from lithic materials not available within the local catchment area – defined by a 15km radius from the site’s location. These factors beg the question of how this site fits into the context of others within the region. This project analyzes this …

The Air That Moves Between Us, Maia Lynn Daschke

Honors Program Theses and Projects

When I enrolled in my first creative nonfiction workshop my junior year of college, I was immediately taken with the genre. I had always loved writing, but I had never written about myself. Growing up I wrote fiction, and as I got older my writing was entirely comprised of academic pieces only. As soon as the nonfiction workshop allowed me to write about myself, I began using writing as a form of therapy and self-help. I was able to work through my feelings on the page and turn my emotional trauma, my regrets, and my embarrassments into artwork, which has …

Good News And Bad News, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

This weekend, there was some good news, and there was some bad news in sport, a high and low, and both of considerable significance. The good news came from hockey. The bad news, in some ways bigger than the good news, came from horse racing. Both cases involved one of the biggest names in each of the sports: Connor McDavid and Bob Baffert.

An Examination Of The Influence Of Literacy Upon Political, Cultural And Class Unity In England And Francia During The Early Middle Ages, Matthew Abbott May 2021

An Examination Of The Influence Of Literacy Upon Political, Cultural And Class Unity In England And Francia During The Early Middle Ages, Matthew Abbott

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

At first glance, the collapse of the Roman Empire also meant a breakdown of the unifying bureaucratic and cultural bonds tying together Europe, and thus, a collapse of the Empire to a fractious mass of warring dukedoms and kingdoms. Yet, despite this loss of central Roman governmental authority, the retained Latin and emerging vernacular literacy encouraged the old bonds and fostered new connections within the elite classes. Among the successor states to the Roman Empire, Anglo-Saxon England and Francia provide strong evidence of the significant role that literacy played in the maintenance and establishment of cultural bonds. Despite significant differences, …

Teaching Philippine Literature And Illness: Finding Cure In Humanities, John Paolo Sarce

English Faculty Publications

Health and illness as themes are uncommonly being touched in literature classrooms. Other than the lack of interdisciplinary studies or specialists in this field in the Philippines; often teachers are also confronted with tons of materials that they are either overwhelmed to teach or find it difficult to deliver on their classes. This is the goal of this paper; help teachers gain confidence and basic knowledge of teaching literature that discusses health and illness especially at this time of history. Helping both teachers and students to understand and appreciate literature as a space for developing empathy while also honing their …

Edgar Allan Poe: Addressing The Haunting Legacy Of American Exceptionalism, Kaitlyn Quinn May 2021

Edgar Allan Poe: Addressing The Haunting Legacy Of American Exceptionalism, Kaitlyn Quinn

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

The term “American exceptionalism” is synonymous with the American identity, yet it can prove to be a dangerous association. Donald E. Pease in “American Exceptionalism” states, “Despite [John] Winthrop’s ‘A Model of Christian Charity’ (1630) fostering a tendency to view America in religious terms…American exceptionalism was more decisively shaped by the ideals of the European Enlightenment” (Pease). Puritan leader John Winthrop first introduced “American exceptionalism” in his sermon “A Model of Christian Charity.” Winthrop proclaimed, “For wee must consider that wee shall be as a city upon a hill” (Winthrop 2). Certainly, Winthrop’s words resonated with the Puritans as they …

The Way We Remember It: The Popular Memory Of The Battle Of Gettysburg, Glenn Dietrich May 2021

The Way We Remember It: The Popular Memory Of The Battle Of Gettysburg, Glenn Dietrich

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

The relationship between history and memory is an essential and complicated concept that significantly affects how the public remembers the past. A prime example of this complex relationship between history and memory is true in the most famous battle of the Civil War. Gettysburg is one of the most critical events in American history, for which thousands of books and countless historians have retold this momentous battle. In the case of the popular memory of Gettysburg, I argue that the significant amount of academic historiography, popular media, and American history textbooks have established a reconciliationist memory. This memory focuses more …

Curators And Active Participants: Archives, Exhibits, Engagement, And Outreach Through Teaching, Rebecca Fitzsimmons

Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library

This presentation focuses on how a set of digital humanities workshops offered to university faculty helped them incorporate new resources and methods into their teaching. The first workshop was an overview of digital tools that focused on getting started without feeling overwhelmed, ways to incorporate art and archival resources into projects, and approaches to facilitating meaningful experiences in the classroom. The second workshop refined this material by focusing on how the same idea and content could be used to create three different digital humanities projects—a collection database and map, an online exhibit, and a digital publication. The exhibitions and digital …

Hans Staden's Warhaftige Historia: How A Tale Of Brazilian Captivity Affirmed Staden's Protestant Identity, Joy Zanghi May 2021

Hans Staden's Warhaftige Historia: How A Tale Of Brazilian Captivity Affirmed Staden's Protestant Identity, Joy Zanghi

The Gettysburg Historical Journal

Hans Staden’s Warhaftige Historia detailed his experience as a captive to the Tupinambá in Brazil in the 1550s. The text serves as a gateway into the minds of Europeans in Brazil during this time period. After spending years working for the Catholic Portuguese in Brazil and nine months as a captive, native Hessians viewed Staden as a “foreigner” upon his return to his homeland. Staden used his text as a way to confirm his identity as a staunch Protestant and a devoted Hessian through a dedication to Prince Philipp and numerous allusions to his faith. In addition to solidifying his …

The Complex Relationship Between Jews And African Americans In The Context Of The Civil Rights Movement, Hannah Labovitz May 2021

The Complex Relationship Between Jews And African Americans In The Context Of The Civil Rights Movement, Hannah Labovitz

The Gettysburg Historical Journal

The Civil Rights Movement occurred throughout a substantial portion of the twentieth century, dedicated to fighting for equal rights for African Americans through various forms of activism. The movement had a profound impact on a number of different communities in the United States and around the world as demonstrated by the continued international attention marked by recent iterations of the Black Lives Matter and ‘Never Again’ movements. One community that had a complex reaction to the movement, played a major role within it, and was impacted by it was the American Jewish community. The African American community and the Jewish …

From Georgian England To The Arctic: Gender And Cultural Transformation In The Samuel Hearne Expeditions (1769-1772), Bridget B. Kennedy

The Gettysburg Historical Journal

From 1769 to 1772, Samuel Hearne embarked on the first European overland expedition to the Arctic under orders from the Hudson’s Bay Company. In search of copper reserves and sites for future company forts, the Hudson’s Bay Company outfitted Hearne with a group of Chipewyan and Cree guides that would take him to the lands past the Arctic Circle where no other European had been. As the only European in his expedition party, Hearne had to quickly adapt to the Athabascan way of life and found his English and imperialist cultural ideas challenged by his native travel companions. Hearne also …

The Extraordinary Chambers In The Courts Of Cambodia: An Extraordinary Success Or An Ordinary Failure?, Vamika Jain

The Gettysburg Historical Journal

This paper will examine the effectiveness of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia at providing some measure of transitional justice to the victims of the Khmer Rouge regime. It delves into an expanded role of tribunals that extends beyond the courtroom and seeks to highlight faults and success of the ECCC as lessons for future iterations of international courts and tribunals.
