A belief is one’s personal attitude regarding an issue in the universe that contains evidence of truth to it. A delusion can be defined as a peculiar belief that contradicts reality, scientific evidence, and rational thinking, and may be attributed to personality disorders. In order to determine where a delusion is a belief, it is important to recognize the circumstances under which certain beliefs are held. While a delusion sounds similar to a false belief, it is an entirely unique phenomenon. In the case of personality disorders like the Capgras delusion, schizophrenia, and Reverse Othello syndrome individuals genuinely believe in …

The Chimera: Multiple Selves, Conflicting Desires, And Fluctuating Power Relations In Qualitative Research, Su Jung Um
The Qualitative Report
In this article, I (re)constructed and (re)presented a dialogic inquiry among my chimeric selves engaged in a study which I conducted from 2013 to 2017 to examine teaching experiences of graduates from a social justice-oriented preservice program. I interrogated the roles of my different, disparate, and discontinuous selves in the research process – as a former teacher, a former instructor of my research participants, a researcher with particular academic and political opinions, and as a foreigner working toward a doctoral degree from/in a U.S. higher education institution. In this article, I demonstrated how my chimeric selves with conflicting desires and …

The COVID-19 pandemic has prompted a unique global experience, arousing both exclusionary nationalistic and inclusionary responses of solidarity. This article aims to explore the discursive and linguistic means by which the COVID-19 pandemic, as a macro-event, has been translated into local micro-events. The analysis studies the global pandemic through the initial statements of 29 leading political actors across four continents. The aim is to examine discursive constructions of solidarity and nationalism through the social representation of inclusion/exclusion of in-, out-, and affiliated groups. The comparative analysis is based on the theoretical and methodological framework of the socio-cognitive approach to critical …

Mixed (F)Ixed Messages, Lauren A. Verrett
LSU Master's Theses
Many individuals have an understanding that our lives have a timeline, and this timeline is full of objectives that we perceive as absolutes. Through personal observations it has become apparent that there are many amazing men and woman that are stagnant because they were raised to believe that meeting these goalposts are a priority. In an age of individualism, it is evident that every individual has control of their own life through their actions. However, in this same age of technology and social media, the anxiety of not meeting certain requirements or standards is even more apparent than previous generations. …
Power Structures, Michael A. Whitehead
Power Structures, Michael A. Whitehead
LSU Master's Theses
Power Structures is a series of drawings and prints inspired by my fixation with the intricate utilitarian architecture and dystopian atmosphere of Louisiana’s petrochemical corridor. The architectural forms within this body of work juxtapose components of disparate industrial sites to form ruinous monuments to power and progress. The Power Structures are composites of photographs, technical drawings, and memories I have made in my time studying Cancer Alley. I introduce machined aircraft components, gate valves, and various fasteners into the architectural forms of petrochemical plants as elements of misdirection, blurring the line between reality and memory, fact and fabrication.

[Thoughts On] The Painter & The Act Of Painting, Samantha Rosado
LSU Master's Theses
In the satirical manifesto that accompanies my work, humor, and sarcasm play an important role in understanding the narrator’s tone. The information included is both factual and imagined, pulled from stories and experiences of a group of painters. My hope is to help aspiring painters develop their own rules and philosophies based on what they learn through the canon of art history. As a writer I aim to motivate those who feel under-represented in the world of fine art and craft to reject feelings of inadequacy. As an artist I make with the intention of being vulnerable and honest.
Neverending Loop, Joseph Nivens
Neverending Loop, Joseph Nivens
LSU Master's Theses
The intention of NeverEnding Loop is to depict the trauma of queer adolescense contrasted by the shadow of the closet that follows LGBTQ+ children into adulthood. The reality for queer people is that coming out is a process that never ends and a task that can create a lonely existence for those that are different from the norm. The artwork aims to convey the very real and confusing struggle of finding your identity as a queer person existing in a heterosexual world.
NeverEnding Loop explores loops and cycles in short animations, sculptural forms with repeating imagery, and mixed media forms …
Body/Mind:Matter, Mary Ellen Ratcliff
Body/Mind:Matter, Mary Ellen Ratcliff
LSU Master's Theses
Body/Mind:Matter presents the unfiltered experiences of living in a period of momentous instability. Three life-sized figurative sculptures stage my emotional journey towards mindfulness as a direct response to the pandemic and my growing concern for our collective future. A winding network of crocheted yarns and growing vines interweave the troubled figures to signify our complex dependencies upon one another and our environment.
The condition of the encumbered bodies is a result of the worried mind. Revitalized matter proposes reconciliation by introducing a sense of hope; decaying surfaces reveal new life; fused wires hold up under immense pressure; and soft woven …

Many foreign researches, according to the author, have contributed to the development of the Moroccan civilization. In fact, urbanism is considered as one of the most important manifestations of the city, as it consists of a very special and well designed structure as well as walls, fortifications and gates. These characteristics play an essential role in protecting the city from any external attacks. This report represents the plan followed by the researcher in writing this thesis. It mainly includes: the history of the military architecture in Fez during the Marini era; its types and characteristics. It also includes a detailed …

This article represents some inquiries about Mohamed Dahman’s book entitled: Nomadic and stability. The researcher believes what motivated the author to write about this issue is the lackof studies that address the issue of sociology in the Sahraoui context. Therefore, this book is mainly about two eras; the pre- Spanish colonial period, 2- the period of stability and the occurrence of the social, legal institutions. Aatouf tried to analyze the content of the chapters of the book. He titled the first chapter as: Nomadic, as a life style. Dahman, in this chapter, tried to analyze the different types of Bedouins …

The article discusses the factors that contributed to the defeat of Athens, which was a very powerful country. These factors were mainly about the leaders that gave priority to the private interests over the public ones which they consider as an act of treason. This led to the defeat of Athens which made it at the mercy of its enemies. The theme of “Treason” is considered an important key term in the regard, as it represents the Athens dystopia. Another factor that led to this defeat, mentioned in the text, is Athens failure in the campaign against Sicily in 403 …

In her publication, the author expressed that the tribal gatherings in southern Morocco are of an extremely complex nature. According to Dr. Fatima Faiz, the element of water is considered a sacred element to these tribes as it embodies all life’s details. Also, the water is considered a sacred element for its pivotal role in ritual magic practices. The author asserts that water rituals in the southeast is not just a folkloric phenomenon, but it rather refers to the peculiarities of society as a well-structured social structure. At last, the author concluded her publication by stating that renewing the connection …

This publication stated that the Sufi heritage, whether in manuscript or publication, is an immense scientific material that reflects two main issues: the ethical and educational aspirations of those who created it as well as their intellectual orientation, and that this heritage indirectly symbolizes the living conditions and the social and political conditions of those who created it. In addition, the author mentioned that the literature written about the heritage of Sufism is varied and numerous which is usually dependent on the multiplicity and diversity of the intellectual visions and the methodological trends of those who compiled it. These writings …

The article deals with the issue of the Islamic endowment, and that from two angles: the first is the jurisprudential angle, and the second is the contemporary investment angle in defining the terminological consideration of the issues of the Islamic endowment. The interest in investing endowments and preserving their continuity now the same. This allows for a fundamental issue, namely, the preparation of investment programs that take into account the interests and legitimacy aspects. In addition to maintaining the delicate balance between its openness to the requirements of preponderant interests and preserving the endowment that is embodied in the survival …

The discussion about territorial integrity through what is raised by the relations between the Moroccan metropolises and their desert expanses from a scientific, cognitive and intellectual aspect is a unified talk. The latter is due to the strong bonds that unite Moroccan with their surroundings, whether Sahrawi or otherwise, throughout history which evidently confirms that they were deeply aware of the significance of what these bonds build thanks to scholars and their great knowledge. The relations between the Sahara and the rest of the Morocco’s regions also provide and allow a great possibility for the expansion of the flag. Therefore, …

Wild Animal Suffering And The Laissez-Faire Intuition, Beka Jalagania
Wild Animal Suffering And The Laissez-Faire Intuition, Beka Jalagania
Between the Species
Are we required to assist wild animals suffering due to natural causes? The laissez-faire intuition (LFI) says that we are not. On this view, although we may have special duties to assist wild animals, there are no general requirements to care for them. In this article I critically examine the origins of the LFI and assess its reliability. In particular, I attempt to provide answers to the questions such as how people who have come to endorse this intuition form it and whether it is a genuine moral intuition. I conclude that the LFI is the result of various external …

Review Of Andy Lamey's Duty And The Beast: Should We Eat Meat In The Name Of Animal Rights?, Angus Taylor
Between the Species
In Duty and the Beast, Andy Lamey confronts arguments for what he calls new omnivorism – recent arguments that profess to undermine the moral injunction against eating meat that is so prominent in the animal protection (animal rights) movement. Instead of rejecting animal protection as such, the new critics claim that in the pursuit of this objective the consumption of some meat is permissible or even obligatory.
