Immodest Immortality: Emperor Maximilian I'S Artistic Program And The Ambraser Heldenbuch, 1504-1519, Jessica Cochran
History ETDs
Maximilian I (r. 1493-1519) utilized various forms of artistic and literary media throughout his reign to control his public image after his death. This thesis focuses on a manuscript project that has historically received little scholarly attention. The Ambraser Heldenbuch, produced between 1504 and 1517, preserves German heroic epics, many of which would otherwise be lost today. The manuscript has been highly valued for its literary and linguistic significance, but this thesis argues that the entire project sheds light on Maximilian’s plan to immortalize not only his own reputation, but also that of his family. This thesis focuses on …
Through Savage Dogs: Police Dogs, African Americans, And Opportunity For Change Amidst The Civil Rights Movement, Kyle Oswald
Through Savage Dogs: Police Dogs, African Americans, And Opportunity For Change Amidst The Civil Rights Movement, Kyle Oswald
Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado
How did the use of police dogs affect the American civil rights movement? This paper argues that police dogs during the movement furthered the protesters’ cause through violent conflicts between law enforcement and protesters. The use of police dogs during this movement characterized the interconnected historical struggle between African Americans and the white supremacist status quo represented by law enforcement. While initially serving as tools for law enforcement to fight crime, police dogs became brutal symbols of the status quo’s power against the protesters. However, instead of ceding to the status quo, protestors embraced a form of martyrdom to continue …

Does Gender Matter? Job Stress, Work-Life Balance, Health And Job Satisfaction Among University Teachers In India, Sandip Solanki, Meeta Mandaviya
Does Gender Matter? Job Stress, Work-Life Balance, Health And Job Satisfaction Among University Teachers In India, Sandip Solanki, Meeta Mandaviya
Journal of International Women's Studies
This study investigates gender differences in the perceived level of stress of university instructors in India. An online cross-sectional survey was completed with 86 respondents comprised of 51 males and 35 females in the state of Gujarat. Results indicate that job stress on work-life balance is significantly stronger for females. Additionally, male respondents scored higher in managing anger at work compared with female respondents and reveal a stronger detachment with work. Further, male respondents have more health-related issues compared with females due to job stress and imbalance in work life, while females exhibit lower career resilience due to family characteristics …
Gendering The Public Sector: Women’S Status In Local Administrations. A Case Study From Spain, Eva Bermúdez-Figueroa
Gendering The Public Sector: Women’S Status In Local Administrations. A Case Study From Spain, Eva Bermúdez-Figueroa
Journal of International Women's Studies
Women’s role in political representation has been deeply studied in the administration and political literature, but scarcely researched from an employment point of view. Furthermore, there is a lack of attention to public employment in administrations, specifically municipalities, which are the closest public level to the citizenry. We claim women's employment in public administration presents similar characteristics to private employment—occupational segregation, wage gap, glass ceiling—despite being a traditional niche of protected employment for women in Europe and globally. This fact is contrary to what might be expected, from a guarantor of equality in the public sector.
Women And Local Government Elections In Turkey: Analysis Of Supply And Demand-Side Framework, Abdul -Malik Abdulai, Ayten Ceter, Israel Nyaburi Nyadera
Women And Local Government Elections In Turkey: Analysis Of Supply And Demand-Side Framework, Abdul -Malik Abdulai, Ayten Ceter, Israel Nyaburi Nyadera
Journal of International Women's Studies
How do women perform in Turkish local government elections? Existing studies have delved on the subject of participation and representation of women in political activities and the main concern has been to assess the factors responsible for the underrepresentation of women in politics. However, previous studies have largely focused on the representation of women in national legislative assemblies seemingly to assert that political representation of women is confined to national politics and their representation in local governments is largely overlooked. This paper seeks to fill the lacuna in the literature by focusing on participation and representation of women in local …
Characterization Of European Female Informal Investors, María De Las Mercedes
Characterization Of European Female Informal Investors, María De Las Mercedes
Journal of International Women's Studies
In recent years, most sectors have benefited from an explosion in the creation of startups in different entrepreneurial environments. Along these lines, there has been a growing interest in the role of informal investors in the creation of new companies with the aim of identifying the characteristics that could help governments and regulators to promote different measures that help economic growth. Various studies identified that informal investments (that is, those that cover the financing needs of business plans in their entrepreneurial stage) contribute to entrepreneurial activity at national level. The objective of this analysis is to identify the factors that …
'Noble Mothers' And Their Others: Racialized Women Entrepreneurs And Poverty Finance, Heather Montes Ireland
'Noble Mothers' And Their Others: Racialized Women Entrepreneurs And Poverty Finance, Heather Montes Ireland
Journal of International Women's Studies
Microfinance has become standardized within global development policy, disproportionately impacting the lives of women of the global South and, increasingly, in the global North with the dismantling of the welfare state. Poverty finance policies employ an entrepreneurial model to facilitate women’s labor market participation whereby borrowers are extended microcredit, or small loans, to invest in their microbusinesses. Global poverty finance is, however, deeply gendered and racialized in ideology and practice. This paper explores the ways that entrepreneurialism, as a cultural formation, privatizes women’s labor into normative gendered, feminine, and domestic labor sectors alongside the expansion of markets and neoliberal restructuring …
Quality Of Work And Unpaid Reproductive Labour In The South African Labour Market, Odile Mackett
Quality Of Work And Unpaid Reproductive Labour In The South African Labour Market, Odile Mackett
Journal of International Women's Studies
Since the 1970s and 1980s, women’s increased labour force participation has caught the attention of scholars, governments, labour unions and organisations such as the ILO. The increase in female labour force participation has accompanied the globalisation and liberalisation of product and labour markets around the world. As a result of these changing characteristics around the labour force, particularly as it relates to growing precariousness in the labour market, the ILO developed the Decent Work Agenda to set a standard with which to measure workplace vulnerability. They also listed gender equality as a cross-cutting goal of the Agenda and recognise the …
“Not Women’S Work”: Gendered Labor, Political Subjectivity And Motherhood, Mary E. Wilhoit
“Not Women’S Work”: Gendered Labor, Political Subjectivity And Motherhood, Mary E. Wilhoit
Journal of International Women's Studies
This article challenges broadly applied beliefs about the gendered nature of informality and the marginalization of single mothers to argue that many such women in Ayacucho, Peru routinely sought out formal-sector jobs and used these to exert authority over certain local processes of development. I argue that this situation, influenced in part by the male-dominated nature of the lucrative but completely informal coca economy, may also reflect Andean ideologies of maternal authority and the freedom afforded to single, rather than married, women. This article draws on over sixteen months of fieldwork in rural Ayacucho, during which time I observed women’s …
Impact Of The Turkish Labor Market On Physical Activities And Sports, Ersöz Gözde, Meltem İnce-Yenilmez
Impact Of The Turkish Labor Market On Physical Activities And Sports, Ersöz Gözde, Meltem İnce-Yenilmez
Journal of International Women's Studies
The sports industry is growing fast on a global scale and is inclusive of both the manufacturing and service sectors because of its versatility and diversified workforce. In Turkey the growth rate in college graduates with degrees aligned to the industry is significant. However, despite the representation of women in the industry as athletes and teachers, within sports management women remain significantly underrepresented. This discussion highlights the cultural norms that contribute to gender representation and forecasts the gender equity benefits that would accrue to greater female representation in the sports industry.
Crafted For The Male Gaze: Gender Discrimination In The K-Pop Industry, Liz Jonas
Crafted For The Male Gaze: Gender Discrimination In The K-Pop Industry, Liz Jonas
Journal of International Women's Studies
This paper explores the ways in which the idol industry portrays male and female bodies through the comparison of idol groups and the dominant ways in which they are marketed to the public. A key difference is the absence or presence of agency. Whereas boy group content may market towards the female gaze, their content is crafted by a largely male creative staff or the idols themselves, affording the idols agency over their choices or placing them in power holding positions. Contrasted, girl groups are marketed towards the male gaze, by a largely male creative staff and with less idols …

Loose Connections In The Just Society, Benjamin Parviz
Loose Connections In The Just Society, Benjamin Parviz
Theses
John Rawls’ influential A Theory of Justice presents a liberal theory in which individuals gain “a sense of justice” that commits them to the success of the just society above other interests or life plans. Critics of Rawlsian liberalism such as Taylor, Sandel, MacIntyre, Walzer, and the communitarians have variously complained that his theory inadequately accounts for individual commitment to community as distinct from commitment to the whole of society. In this essay I consider Rawls’s theory in light of the arguments of these community concerned critics in order to understand whether these complaints have any merit. In particular, I …
From Stasis To Ecstasy: Tracing Bernard Of Clairvaux's "Queer" Influence On French Gothic Art, Jackson O. Larson
From Stasis To Ecstasy: Tracing Bernard Of Clairvaux's "Queer" Influence On French Gothic Art, Jackson O. Larson
Art & Art History ETDs
I trace the progression of figural sculpture in the Latin West from the static statues of the late-tenth century to the ecstatic statues of the mid-thirteenth century. I explore the various reasons for the return of freestanding figural sculpture and suggest that the return is indicative of an eroticization of the Christian holy figures. I suggest that Bernard of Clairvaux’s erotic theology in the twelfth century resulted in a synthesis of eros and Christian devotion that allowed latent classicism to find purchase in Christian art. I submit that Bernard’s influence on European art is a form of “queering”—a process by …
The Transformation Of Identity In Early Medieval England: Continuity, Disruption, And Creolization, Michael Sean Limmer
The Transformation Of Identity In Early Medieval England: Continuity, Disruption, And Creolization, Michael Sean Limmer
History ETDs
The period following Rome’s administrative withdrawal from Britain (c. 410 CE) has sparked intense debate for centuries, spawning a variety of theories concerning ethnic identity and the nature of cultural exchange on the island. Presently, the very nature of the term “Anglo-Saxon” itself is at the center of these discussions. This thesis examines historical, archaeological, and genetic evidence to cast a light on who constituted the people of Britain during this migration period through to the time of Alfred, and to what extent creolization might have played out. Ultimately, the evidence from this period suggests that ethnic identities cannot reasonably …
Battle Rock: Anatomy Of A Massacre, Adam R. Fitzhugh
Battle Rock: Anatomy Of A Massacre, Adam R. Fitzhugh
Dissertations and Theses
On June 9, 1851, nine men under the direction of a steamboat captain and land speculator named William Tichenor landed on the southern coast of the Oregon Territory at present-day Port Orford with the intention of establishing a permanent settlement. Tichenor's plan was to establish a commercial port that would supply gold mining endeavors in the interior. The landing party's instructions were to survey the townsite while Tichenor traveled to San Francisco to gather more men and supplies. Before departing, he promised the group he would return in exactly two weeks. He also assured them that the local Quatomah Indians, …

We tried in this work to do the correction and remedial work for language and prosodic mistakes which were very huge in number, still the poems were very excellent and valuable, but, these mistakes disfigured its language rhythms. In our correction and remedial work we depended on number of Arabic language dictionaries, our long scientific …
