The NatureCulture collaborative study abroad course represents a central outcome of the Collaborative Research Grant and has undergone substantial conceptual, curricular, and pedagogical development. While finalization of a site-specific itinerary has been delayed due to unanticipated challenges in securing a stable and academically viable location, the collaborative course itself is fully designed and pedagogically complete. Grounded in interdisciplinary, team-taught instruction, the NatureCulture model integrates environmental humanities, creative writing, intercultural learning, and eco-pedagogy to foster place-based, experiential, and critically reflective learning. Within this framework, faculty have developed complementary courses that collectively serve students across multiple stages of the curriculum.

This article suggests that Linear B sign 21 (of unknown origin)

may derive ultimately from the Ancient Egyptian ‘wedjat eye’

(Eye of Horus). A point of special interest here is the possibility

that the pronunciation of Linear B sign 21 (designated as ‘qi’)

derives in abbreviated form from the Proto-Indo-European dual

of ‘eye’ and would therefore be the oldest Greek attestation of

that reconstructed PIE form.

Untangling The New Deal Slogan’S Origin Stories, James Kimble Ph.D.

Existing scholarship on the emergence of Franklin D. Roosevelt’s new deal slogan is inconsistent and incomplete. This article constructs a revised history of the phrase by scrutinizing the contradictory stories of its origin. The investigation initially establishes the historical context by examining the phrase’s trajectory prior to Roosevelt. It then considers the various accounts of those who have been credited with coining the slogan on his behalf. Finally, the article recovers the indispensable contribution of Charles R. Macauley, who has become the forgotten man in debates over new deal’s murky beginnings.

Universe Without A Cause: A Reply To David Lu, Daniel Linford

David Lu has recently argued that denying the Modified Causal Principle (MCP)—that if the universe began to exist, then it has a cause—leads to the conclusion that we likely inhabit an Omphalos universe, one that began recently with the appearance of age. Lu goes on to argue that if the universe is likely Omphalos, then independent measurements of the universe’s age are unlikely to agree. I offer three families of objections. First, Lu’s probabilistic reasoning faces technical challenges and, even if those challenges are overcome, cannot rule out an Omphalos universe. Second, I propose an alternative hypothesis that does so. …

Legend has it that Jane Austen excluded the topic of slavery in toto from the text of Mansfield Park even though (or because) the family patriarch, Sir Thomas Bertram, spends the first half of the novel on his estate in Antigua. It is true that Sir Thomas is off-camera. However, in the family circle one evening shortly after his return from the West Indies, the reticent heroine, Fanny Price, attempts to open a discussion of the slave trade—without success. Principlism is one of the leading approaches to AI ethics. Developed originally to address bioethical issues in medicine and research, the theory requires decision-makers to consider various ethical principles to justify their actions. Despite its dominance in bioethics and growing popularity in AI ethics, principlism faces serious theoretical and practical criticisms. One serious criticism is that since ethical principles are combined ad hoc, conflicts inevitably arise between them, leading to inconsistencies. While defenders of principlism propose a process for resolving such disputes, contemporary critics argue that this process is incomplete, and at best, principlist frameworks can only help structure analysis …

Neuroaesthetic frequency tuning posits that deliberate selection of musical parameters can modulate large-scale neural systems to support emotional memory retrieval and cognitive regulation in neurodivergent populations. Drawing on contemporary evidence from network neuroscience, cognitive musicology, and affective science, the article synthesizes how rhythmic, harmonic, and lyrical structures align with Default Mode (DM), fronto-parietal control, salience, motor, and limbic systems, and how these alignments can be targeted to balance internally oriented mentation with task engagement. This study examines the emergence of digital Sufism as a modern spiritual phenomenon. It investigates the participation of Sufi groups on social media, the themes conveyed in their online sermons, and the ways their digital strategies compare with other Islamic organizations. The article further explores how Sufi orders navigate virtual environments, questioning whether they reveal elements of esoteric knowledge in these spaces. Located on chromosome 20, the prion protein gene (prnp) is responsible for neuronal health and supporting healthy brain function. Missense mutations in specific areas of the gene, however, result in an abnormally folded protein, referred to as a prion. When the abnormally folded version of the prion protein comes into contact with normally folded proteins in the brain, it causes the regular protein to misfold, creating a cascade effect. The neurodegenerative disorders that result from mutated PRNP present similarly, but are distinguished from each other by where exactly in the gene the mutation occurred. This paper examines how two Philippine children's books depict state surveillance and its effects on a child's perspective of family, authority figures, and childhood. Through analysis of Augie Rivera's Isang Harding Papel and Sandra Nicole Roldan's At the School Gate, this project makes a connection between children's literature and surveillance studies, offering new framework to engage with children’s literature depicting authoritarian regimes and state violence, especially in cases where children were targets of their governments. Character Kinetics: An Interactive, Immersive Installation On The Mindfulness Of Asemic Writing, Danielle S. Desmarteau

Character kinetics is an installation art piece that explores how writing asemically (without language) can ease the body and mind into the present moment, allowing one to focus on the material and movement of mark-making. Throughout the semester, I held workshops where participants were invited to scribble it out, to express their thoughts and surroundings without needing to make sense in the context of language. The resulting pieces were transformed into sculptural paper forms suspended in air, creating an interactive three-dimensional space inviting viewers to analyze the infinite possibility of interpretation within asemic symbolism.

Emptiness Is Enlightenment: Two Interpretations Of Nāgārjuna's Middle Way As Buddhist Soteriology, Isabella R. Sullivan

This thesis investigates the soteriological implications of Nāgārjuna’s doctrine of emptiness (śūnyatā) as presented in the Mūlamadhyamakakārikā (MMK), or Root Verses of the Middle Way. While Nāgārjuna’s radical denial of intrinsic existence (svabhāva) is widely recognized as a masterful critique of metaphysics, modern scholarship remains divided on whether this "right view" can sufficiently ground the Buddhist Path to Liberation. This project centers on a comparative analysis of two prominent modern interpretations: Jay Garfield’s semantic anti-dualism and Giuseppe Ferraro’s anti-metaphysical realism.

What is known of the baseball career and associated events in the life of John W. “Bud” Fowler (1858–1913), an inductee into the National Baseball Hall of Fame, is described in a chronological set of essays. Some essays are incomplete, reflecting the limited information available. In addition, the absence of essays for months, sometimes nearly entire years, also highlights gaps in what we know about Fowler’s career. These aspects of the essays are intended to help focus additional study by researchers on particular dates and places to fill the gaps and present a fuller understanding of this baseball pioneer’s life. …

This project addressed finding meaning and value in old age. The research conducted explored barriers to achieving meaning and value and how to overcome those obstacles. The research specifically focused on senior adults who reside in a Christian-based assisted living home located in the Twin Cities, Minnesota. In response to this problem, the researcher studied the lives of three older biblical characters, Jacob, the author of Psalm 71, and Anna, and reviewed relevant literature on barriers senior citizens face today. This article sweeps away glossy abstractions obscuring the indenturing of women in sexual servitude in Japan. These abstractions were generated by anthropologists writing in English in the first two decades of the 21^st century who inverted the relationship between perpetrator and victim to suggest that female customers exploited hosts. To overturn this view and expose the ‘gendered reality that [i]s really going on’ in Japan, this article differently explains from a feminist perspective how present-day host and scout businesses indenture Japanese women in sexual servitude. This reflective practice case study examines the studio environment of a small ensemble of female actors aged 16-19, in the rehearsal of a one-act play. Performing arts researchers working in youth spaces commonly adhere to conventions of ethnodrama and facilitate a process in which participants contribute personal stories as performance material. The present paper uses a published text (Slut by Patricia Cornelius) to position participants as actors, rather than devisors who must conjure original material. Background: In recent years, the sociopolitical landscape in the United States has shifted due to an increase in state-level legislation regarding LGBTQ+ rights, a trend that has been particularly pronounced in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Given continued challenges of college transition and recent changes (e.g., COVID) leading to increased use of college counseling services and past studies exploring spiritualty/religion and resilience pertaining to psychological well-being (PWB), this study explored the relationship between spirituality, resilience, and PWB in college students. Three scales, the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale, Daily Spiritual Experience Scale, and the Ryff Psychological Well-Being Scale, were used to measure the relationship between spirituality, resilience, and PWB. Results of this study showed support for the relationship between spirituality, resilience, and PWB in college students. Through an analysis of historical editions of the Eastern Michigan University student newspaper, The Eastern Echo, I explore the history of queer student activism on EMU’s campus. Contextualized by broader LGBTQ+ history, I assess changes over time and common themes that defined LGBT student activism, revealing a rich history going back nearly six decades. The research was done in an effort to better understand how Eastern came to be known as one of the most diverse and accepting college campuses in Michigan.
