Review, Introduction, And Preliminary Documentation Of Marginalia In Portland State University’S Fasciculus Temporum/Malleus Maleficarum Sammelband, Samuel Barnack
Extra-Textual Elements
This paper presents an overview of the contents of the new database of written marginal notations in Portland State University’s fifteenth-century printed codex, and some of the research threads that can be taken up from a study of those notations.
The motive for this project was an interest in readership usage of the codex and the two books contained within it. It begins by discussing terms that Andi Johnson and I elected to use to tag and name different categories of features, then I discuss some of the findings and possible future research avenues that can expand on them.
Finally, …
Hunting The Other: Witch Trials In Lorraine, 1490s-1590s, Morgan Gubser
Hunting The Other: Witch Trials In Lorraine, 1490s-1590s, Morgan Gubser
Malleus Maleficarum
This paper provides a general survey of witch trials in sixteenth-century Lorraine, where Portland State’s 1490 incunable was held by the abbey of Saint-Avold (Saint-Nabor) of Metz. It includes a brief introduction to the region, information on structures of authority, and a description of the witch trials undertaken there.
It will also include notes on what statistical analysis currently exists regarding Lorraine witch trials, as well as notes regarding the connection that witch hunting has to the PSU Malleus Maleficarum in Lorraine. There is also a statistical analysis included that takes data collected from the existing database of witch trial …

Possible Methods For Incunabula Digitization For Preservation And Analysis, Steven Andrews
Provenance and Preservation
This paper explores different approaches that PSU’s Special Collections Department might take toward digitizing its 1490 incunable containing Werner Rolewinck’s Fasciculus temporum and second-edition Malleus Maleficarum. Digitization will reduce wear-and-tear of the volume and allow access to its contents by a wider range of users.
The Imaginal Lexicon Of Aging Studies, William Ebenstein
The Imaginal Lexicon Of Aging Studies, William Ebenstein
Publications and Research
Aging Studies focuses on the cultural, humanistic and experiential aspects of aging insofar as these are already embedded in literature, art, language and everyday life. The lexicon of this multi-disciplinary field has evolved in response to shifts in cultural attitudes, social roles, and conceptual frameworks. At the same time, many age-related words have links to poetic imagery and ancient myths, and to evocative etymologies that conjure an historical context. The article looks at the ongoing and surprisingly difficult effort to find the right word to call an older person. It reviews the language and literary genres associated with longevity. And, …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study examines the multitude of ways in which White supremacy manifests in the education system and examines how White teachers specifically are working to dismantle White supremacy in middle school classrooms through culturally responsive education. This educational criticism and connoisseurship study focuses on the interactions of White teachers in relation to their Black students, along with observations of their teaching and planning methods. The following research questions guided this research: How are White teachers implementing a culturally responsive classroom environment for Black students? How do White educators plan and enact a culturally responsive curriculum for Black students? How do …
Transnational Religious Pluralism And Identity Formation: Oscar Romero And Salvadoran Diaspora After The Civil War, Kristian A. Diaz
Transnational Religious Pluralism And Identity Formation: Oscar Romero And Salvadoran Diaspora After The Civil War, Kristian A. Diaz
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This project considers the cognitive dissonance experienced by Salvadoran Catholics as civil war violence and their Catholic faith came face-to-face with Romero’s path towards canonization gathered momentum. Through binational, ethnographic observation and interviews, I gathered diverse and sometimes contradictory perspectives of local Salvadorans, transnational pilgrims at the celebration of Romero’s beatification, and Salvadoran Catholics in Los Angeles. I center the beatification event rather than the canonization mass at the Vatican two years later, in 2018, because my primary concern is the meaning Romero holds for Salvadoran’s themselves, including those living in the United States. Through the beatification and canonization, the …

History, Cognition And Nostromo: Conrad’S Explorations Of Torture, Trauma, And The Human Rage For Order, Richard Ruppel
English Faculty Articles and Research
Focusing on Joseph Conrad’s Nostromo, this essay historicizes the treatment of what we now call post-traumatic stress disorder, demonstrating how Conrad anticipated our current understanding and treatment of the illness. The second part of the essay addresses Nostromo’s treatment of historiography. Part three is concerned with epistemology and the relationship between neurological discoveries concerning the gap between perception and consciousness, relating those discoveries to Conrad’s use of delayed decoding.
Doodling As Self-Expression: Building Self-Efficacy In Normally Functioning Adults, Journey Coward
Doodling As Self-Expression: Building Self-Efficacy In Normally Functioning Adults, Journey Coward
Art Therapy | Theses and Dissertations
While previous studies identify doodling as a useful educational tool, this study sought to determine if doodling can build creative or emotional self-efficacy. Self-efficacy is an individual’s belief in their own capacity to express behaviors necessary to attain specific performance goals. The current study also sought to determine if doodling can be a form of self-care. Research collected was quantitative and qualitative using surveys to measure both creative and emotional self-efficacy along with a doodling activity. Ten participants were recruited through convenience sampling on social media and were included in the study after meeting the inclusion criteria of identifying themselves …

Tipping Toward A New Academic Consciousness, Letizia Guglielmo, Esther Skelley Jordan
Journal of Feminist Scholarship
The COVID-19 pandemic and racial reckoning of 2020-2021 have led many faculty in higher education to see the profession and their place in it in a new light (Walton, 2022). While people are broadly engaged in a large-scale cultural re-evaluation of work, labor conditions, and equity, this awakening has posed an existential threat to many academics’ senses of identity, purpose, and community. Through autoethnographic narratives, the authors make meaning of this tipping point through the feminist intersections of space, power, and consciousness. The authors explore coaching and mutual mentoring as strategies for creating and holding space for disrupting these norms …

Fugitive Knowledge And Body Autonomy In The Folklore And Literature Of Zora Neale Hurston And Gloria Naylor, Renée M. Vincent
Fugitive Knowledge And Body Autonomy In The Folklore And Literature Of Zora Neale Hurston And Gloria Naylor, Renée M. Vincent
Journal of Feminist Scholarship
Amidst battles for Covid-19 vaccine mandates and accessibility, media coverage of judicial proceedings stemming from state-sanctioned racialized violence, and the exacerbation of gendered workplace/space inequality via a new virtual reality, the year 2021 marks yet another conflict over the legality of abortion in the United States, with conservative Supreme Court justices aiming to walk back the legalization of a woman’s constitutional right to terminate pregnancy as per Roe v. Wade. Through an exploration of the historical record in conjunction with Zora Neale Hurston’s Their Eyes Were Watching God and Gloria Naylor’s Mama Day, signifiers of what Marilyn Motz calls “fugitive …

“Subverting” The Neoclassic Constraints: The Presence Of Magic In Early Commedia Dell’Arte, Yangzhou Bian
“Subverting” The Neoclassic Constraints: The Presence Of Magic In Early Commedia Dell’Arte, Yangzhou Bian
Theatre Student Scholarship
The project is an initiating discussion about the dramatic function and social-ideological implication of magic and magical elements in the surviving corpus of the Italian improvisational theater commedia dell’arte scenarios from the early seventeenth century. The essay begins with a cursory exploration of the position of commedia dell'arte amongst other notable theatrical forms blossoming across the European continent in the late renaissance. The study then focuses on eight plays selected from the 1611 Scala Collection to further examine the use of magic by commedia performers, followed by individual analysis of plot construct and dramaturgical theories. Finally, observations and connections made …
Mei Lan-Fang: The Masculinist Idealization Of Femininity, Yangzhou Bian
Mei Lan-Fang: The Masculinist Idealization Of Femininity, Yangzhou Bian
Theatre Student Scholarship
Mei Lan-fang was the most well-known Beijing Opera practitioner specializing in the impersonation of historical and mythological female characters. His captivating performance style is known as “The School of Mei”. It balances the external stage presence and internal precision and attends to the minutiae. His performances were drawn predominantly from the classic repertoire, and they have won him the position that “no other Chinese actor attained and retained” (Scott ii). Despite the general perception of Mei’s contribution to the emancipation of women through his work and his self-assertion of sympathy towards their suffering, the underlying motivation may not be as …
Fancy Should Go Forth: Conversations Between Subject And World In "Mont Blanc" And Beachy Head, Liam Waterman
Fancy Should Go Forth: Conversations Between Subject And World In "Mont Blanc" And Beachy Head, Liam Waterman
2022 Undergraduate Awards
In both contemporary Ecocriticism and Romantic studies, the position of the human subject in relation to their world, and to the historical context of that world, has remained a contentious issue. Regarding Percy Shelley’s poem Mont Blanc, Frances Ferguson states that “critics seemed to have agreed on one thing… that it is a poem about the relationship between the human mind and the external world. After that, the debates begin” (172). These debates likely arise from the actual absence within the poem of any certain or unified way of thinking about the relationship between the human subject and the …
Moral Performativity In Eighteenth-Century Abolitionism And Black Lives Matter, Emma Stredder
Moral Performativity In Eighteenth-Century Abolitionism And Black Lives Matter, Emma Stredder
2022 Undergraduate Awards
The shallow phenomenon of moral performativity is consistently prevalent from the abolitionist movement of the eighteenth-century, to the Black Lives Matter movement of the twenty-firstcentury. Olaudah Equiano’s extraordinary abolitionist text, The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano, investigates and utilizes this phenomenon as he offers readers across centuries the opportunity to recognize the tenacious inequality which Black people face, as well as the paradoxical value that moral performativity provides. Through a close reading of Equiano’s religious argument, as well as his sentimental family scene, it may be recognized how egoism has the potential to unite with sentimentalism, and …
Default (Dis)Trust And The Medical Profession, Nathalie C. Diberardino
Default (Dis)Trust And The Medical Profession, Nathalie C. Diberardino
2022 Undergraduate Awards
Trust is typically taken to be an essential constituent to the patient/physician relationship. One way that trust can manifest in the context of medical care is in a default attitude; that is, the initial stance of trusting one takes upon entering any given interaction with a medical professional. In this paper, I identify the current default attitude of (dis)trust that certain marginalized groups are justified in taking towards the medical profession, and I explain why this default is not ideal. I then argue for my account of the ideal default attitude of trust, which I call medial trust. …

Unraveling The Beginning Phase And Final Phase In The Emergence Of The French Alliance, Marvin L. Simner
History Publications
It is widely acknowledged that the military alliance between the United States and France, established in 1778, was largely responsible not only for a number of American victories over the British, but also for the end of the Revolutionary War. While much has been written about this topic as well as the events that occurred between 1777 and 1778 which led to the alliance, far less is known about the factors that took place in 1775/1776 that contributed to the initial need for the alliance as well as the factors that surrounded the culmination, signing, and the final acceptance of …
