Sermon And Song: A Musically Integrative Homiletic, Catherine E. Williams
Sermon And Song: A Musically Integrative Homiletic, Catherine E. Williams
Yale Journal of Music & Religion
For centuries the interdisciplinary dyad of sermon and song has been in the toolkit of effective preachers. Yet scholarship on conjoined preaching and singing has been relatively sparse, despite the abundance of strong biblical, historical, and cultural warrants for its effectiveness as a means of proclamation. Seminary students have been known to graduate without ever seeing the synergistic combination of sermon and song in a preaching syllabus. With the help of musical analogue Theme and Variations, this essay illustrates a variety of ways this preaching method works for musical and “non-musical” users alike. It highlights the spiritual and cultural value …
The Dance Of Ādi Śakti: The Goddess In The Songs Of Bharati And Nazrul, Achintya Prahlad
The Dance Of Ādi Śakti: The Goddess In The Songs Of Bharati And Nazrul, Achintya Prahlad
Yale Journal of Music & Religion
C Subramania Bharati (1882-1921) and Kazi Nazrul Islam (1899-1976) were significant poet-songwriters of the Indian freedom struggle. Their works explore a wide range of themes – political, philosophical, romantic and devotional. Both poets were educated in rāga music, which is prominent in many of their songs. Bharati wrote in Tamil, while Nazrul wrote in Bangla. It is highly unlikely that they read or were influenced by each other’s works. However, one finds several similarities in their poetry, especially the importance given to the goddess Ādi Śakti in her various forms, Kālī in particular. The goddess plays a major role in …

Bodies Of Silence, Floods Of Nectar: Ritual Music In Contemporary Brahmanical Tantric Temples Of Kerala, Paolo Pacciolla
Yale Journal of Music & Religion
The Tantric concept of sound (nāda) as universal life-force has seen worldwide diffusion over the last few decades but such a fame does not reflect academic interest in the impact of Tantra on music. Indeed, while a number of essays have been written to demonstrate the contribution of Tantrism to the evolution of Indian religions and culture, its contribution to music has been left largely unexplored.
The word Tantra refers to a pan-Asian religious phenomenon spread over numerous centuries and including a wide number of sects having different and even opposite philosophical and theological approaches which may be …
Liturgy And Musical Inculturation In A Post-Apartheid South African Catholicism, Austin Chinagorom Okigbo
Liturgy And Musical Inculturation In A Post-Apartheid South African Catholicism, Austin Chinagorom Okigbo
Yale Journal of Music & Religion
There is a developing trend within mainstream South African Churches to incorporate styles of traditional African music and cultural elements in liturgical functions. This is happening in places where such ideas were hitherto unwelcome because mission churches witnessed the denigration of indigenous African cultures by Europeans during the eras of both colonialism and apartheid. Inculturation Theology underscores the current drive for liturgical transformation. It comprises a part of Black Theology in South Africa, which developed as an intellectual framework for liberation during the time of the anti-apartheid struggles. Using the ethnographic study of the cultural mass at Emmanuel Cathedral in …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The existence of the mosque is a holy place for Muslims. Apart from being a place of worship, it also functions as a center for Muslim activities in regulating the life of Muslims. Mosques have many functions, one of which is as an educational institution. So that this function can support activities related to the life of the people and run well and optimally, it is necessary to have supporting facilities and infrastructure. One of the supporting facilities and infrastructure for mosques as educational institutions is a library, which will provide reading facilities that can increase knowledge and religious insight …

Raise of the Absent
Behind the meaning stifled by the oblivion of things and events, by the fragmentation of duration, there is the figure and the fatal enigma of self-identity. Each life is first of all a silence, a postponement of the intimate word, the re verse of a voice, a "limbee" presence. Whoever decides to write about oneself knows well that his exercise is the temptation to take in the trap of words this silence, this setback, this limbo, this murmuring obscurity.

Some Major Problems of Modern Paremiology
Before getting to the heart of the matter, let us first make an empirical observation: in Arab societies, the recurrence of proverbial statements both at the level of oral communication and at the level of written texts is a reality that is evident. It imposes itself on it. Proverbs occupy a prominent place in Arab societies. For a very long time, the Arabs have manifested their taste for this type of concise, very expressive and full of teachings speech.

The Autobiography between two Traditions
It is here a contribution to the reflection around the autobiographical practice in Maghrebin literature of the French language, a practice which is placed between two literary and cultural traditions, if not more. The most obvious at least are the French tradition, and more generally Western, the Maghreb tradition, and more generally Arab.

Politics And Creative Writry: Conrad's "Nostromo" And "The Secret Agent" & "Warren's" All The King's Men, Nofal Lotfi

All through this paper, some three core texts are made use of ; namely, Joseph Conrad's Nostromo (1904) and The Secret Agent (1907), and Robert Warren's All the king's Men(1946). However, the discussion is by no means confined to these three works; a broader outlook is in fact required to cope with thedifferent aspects that relate to are search of this kind. This is perhaps why the present paper will have to go beyond the core texts and attempt to find elsewhere other salient points that can meaningfully add to the main ideas contained in the research.

Notes on the Autobiography
I give these notes on the autobiography as they are, without trying to mask their discontinuity with an explicit link, the inconsistency being sometimes, as R. Barthes says, preferable to the order which distorts "E" and rules of the game.Any literary text is closed to be an act, from the double point of view of the writer and the reader, that is to say that it must involve in the author of "overwhelming consequences" (A. Gide) and influence his life by modifying, through an uncompromising analysis, his outlook on himself, at the same timethat his relationship …
The Ancient's View Of The Poet And Poetry, Brahim Soussi
The Ancient's View Of The Poet And Poetry, Brahim Soussi
Dirassat
The poet’s position in society has always been much discussed throughout the ages and inall civilizations. Thus the poet is accepted and receives praise sometimes, but is rejected and banished from society at other times. The poet's oscillation between these two extremes has always existed and will exist, it seems, as long as there is poetry. However, these two contradictory attitudes towards the Poet and Poetry have never received complete consensus from the different classes of society. The absence of this agreement, no doubt, denotes the necessity of the poet's voice for some and its danger fo rothers.
