معايير دفع التعارض بين المصالح المتزاحمة عند العز بن عبد السلام Criteria For The Payment Of Conflicts Between Crowded Interests According To Al-Ezz Bin Abd Al-Salam, Abdullah Muhammad Al-Saleh, Khadija Abdel Rahim Al Deki

Jordan Journal of Islamic Studies

Craftivism Between Nationalism And Activism In Ukraine And Belarus, Alla Myzelev Mar 2022

Craftivism Between Nationalism And Activism In Ukraine And Belarus, Alla Myzelev

Art History

This article outlines the history and significance of Craftivism in Eastern Europe. Using two case studies of artists it investigates the use of the craft language in Eastern Europe and its usability for activism. Do-It-Yourself culture, of which Craftivism is part, rejects the commercialism, gender norms and the conventional lifestyle in the Global North. Use of crafts as a language of political and social struggle allows to convey the message in a less confrontational but nevertheless very pertinent way. The craftivism is a successful language for the feminist political struggle in the Eastern Europe.

An Ideology Of Racism: Community Representation, Segregation, And The Historical Cemeteries Of Panama City, Florida, Ethan David Mauldin Putman

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Mortuary research in historical archaeology has always acknowledged the cultural and symbolic links between cemeteries and the people who created them. Studies across multiple disciplines focus on what data can be gained about past societies from historical cemeteries, and they tend to ascribe to an understanding of the ‘cemetery-as-model.’ This idea of the local burial ground as a mirror of the community that formed it seems reasonable, even logical, but few of these studies have taken the time to compare the historical context of the societies in question to the results of their cemetery analyses. The assumption of the cemetery …

Curb Your Heroism: How Larry David, An Old, Bald Misanthrope, Won The Hearts Of Millions, Scott T. Allison, James K. Beggan, Olivia Efthimiou

Heroism Science

For eleven television seasons, viewers of the series Curb Your Enthusiasm have been witness to a main character in Larry David who paradoxically displays attributes that are both endearing and revolting. This article offers an analysis of Larry David’s character with the goal of ascertaining his heroic nature, specifically focusing on whether he best meets the scientific criteria for a hero or for an antihero. Drawing from the literature of heroism science, we examine a large body of evidence from episodes of the series supporting arguments for both heroism and antiheroism in Larry’s character. Consistent with definitions of heroism, Larry …

The East Big Cypress Case, 1948-1987: Environmental Politics, Law, And Florida Seminole Tribal Sovereignty, Harry A. Kersey, Jr.

Florida Historical Quarterly

Congressional enactment of the Seminole Indian Land Claims Settlement Act of 1987 paved the way for resolution of a thirty-nine-year political and legal conflict between the Seminole Indians and the state of Florida over control of one of the most environmentally sensitive regions in the state.1 The area, known as the East Big Cypress Reservation, was a 28,000-acre tract lying in western Broward and Palm Beach counties, and it formed a rectangle measuring approximately six miles north to south and eight miles east to west. On the west, the tract abutted the federal Big Cypress Indian Reservation, which was acquired …

"The Fox Goes To France": Florida, Secret Codes, And The Election Of 1876, James C. Clark Mar 2022

"The Fox Goes To France": Florida, Secret Codes, And The Election Of 1876, James C. Clark

Florida Historical Quarterly

Samuel J. Tilden’s defeat in the 1876 presidential election has long been the subject for contention and discussion. While many of the causes have received attention, the role played by the secret telegrams between New York and Florida has been overlooked. Confusion over the codes utilized for the telegrams prevented Tilden’s operatives in Florida from purchasing the vote of a key state official. Had the attempt succeeded, the state’s four electoral votes might have been awarded to Tilden, and the prize of the presidency would have gone to him and the Democratic party.

The Florida, Atlantic And Gulf Central Railroad, 1851-1868, Canter Brown, Jr. Mar 2022

The Florida, Atlantic And Gulf Central Railroad, 1851-1868, Canter Brown, Jr.

Florida Historical Quarterly

The role of the Florida, Atlantic and Gulf Central Railroad (FA&GC) in Florida’s development and politics, during the period beginning with the line’s incorporation in 1851 and lasting until its initial forced sale in 1868, was substantial and controversial. While the sixty-mile line was smaller than either the Pensacola and Georgia Railroad (P&G) or the Florida Railroad (FRR), its eastern terminus was Jacksonville which, only a village in 1851, rapidly developed into the principal port on Florida’s Atlantic coast. Equally propitious, its western end lay at Lake City on the edge of Florida’s rich plantation belt. The FRR’s terminus at …

Review Essay:--Alfred I. Du Pont: His Impact On Florida, Jerrell H. Shofner

Florida Historical Quarterly

Through the pages of this large and well-written book, Joseph Frazier Wall delivers all that the title promises and much more. Beginning with the origins of the du Pont family in the eighteenth century and ending with an epilogue about Ed Ball’s covetous management of the du Pont estate during the half century after Alfred’s death, Wall not only portrays the huge du Pont family through a half dozen generations, but also says a great deal about the growth of business, industry, technology, and finance in the context of the history of the United States from its revolutionary inception in …

West Florida's Creek Indian Crisis Of 1837, Brian R. Rucker Mar 2022

West Florida's Creek Indian Crisis Of 1837, Brian R. Rucker

Florida Historical Quarterly

Although Andrew Jackson’s forays into Spanish West Florida in 1814 and 1818 dispersed several hostile bands of Creek Indians, scattered parties remained in isolated forests and swamps. When Florida was transferred to the United States in 1821, settlers moving into the new territory soon were confronted with the presence of these natives. The majority were located in the central portion of the territory, but sizable bands lived in northwest Florida. The Treaty of Moultrie Creek, signed in 1823, provided for the settlement of approximately 800 friendly Creeks on reservation lands along the Apalachicola River. Smaller bands also lived along the …

Unforgotten Threat: Florida Seminoles In The Civil War, Robert A. Taylor Mar 2022

Unforgotten Threat: Florida Seminoles In The Civil War, Robert A. Taylor

Florida Historical Quarterly

Confederate Florida, far removed from the clash of massed armies to its north, remained in many respects on the periphery of Civil War fighting. The state by no means, however, escaped the war’s impact as violence and the potential for violence served to its residents almost daily reminders of the national struggle. One dimension of Florida’s Civil War experience, a factor which threatened the escalation of violence throughout the conflict, previously has been neglected by students of the state’s history. That factor was the potential for Indian war.
