Fifty years after the arrival of German prisoners of war in Florida their story is still little known.1 Admittedly their presence was minimal since only about 4,000 out of the 378,000 German prisoners who spent time in America were detained in the state. Florida was one of forty-five states with POWs, and the base camp at Camp Blanding, with its fifteen side camps, was only one of 155 base camps in the continental United States.

During World War II, government agencies and private businesses recruited millions of American women for employment in wartime industries and in other nontraditional fields when the nation’s young men left for war. Government propaganda, national periodicals, and local newspapers worked in unison to promote female employment, and popular songs like “Rosie the Riveter” inspired allegiance on the home front. In a radical departure from previously sanctioned public behavior, older, married women— many with children— entered the country’s labor force en masse. In Memoriam: George E. Pozzetta, Florida Historical Society

George E. Pozzetta, professor of history at the University of Florida and editor of the Florida Historical Quarterly, died on May 19, 1994, after a brief illness. Born in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, George received a bachelor of arts degree and a master’s degree from Providence College and a Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He taught at the University of Florida for twenty-three years and served as associate chair and graduate coordinator of the Department of History. An internationally renowned authority on immigration history and ethnicity, George authored or edited six books, including The Immigrant World …

"Hell-By-The-Sea": Florida's Camp Gordon Johnston In World War Ii, David J. Coles

World War II was a profoundly transforming experience in the development of the South and the state of Florida. As historian George Tindall has noted of the region, “To a greater degree than the previous war it put people on the move: to shipyards, war plants, training camps, and far-flung battlefields.” Military facilities costing more than four billion dollars came into being throughout the South, and Florida shared fully in this expansion. The war also brought increased prosperity to both rural and urban areas and hastened the demands of black residents for greater political and economic opportunities.

Florida politicians show up in strange places. Shawn Ryan, pop music writer for The Birmingham News, authored a column on March 2, 1990, about Governor Robert Martinez’s attempt to purge Florida record stores of obscene material. A special session of the Florida legislature had just pulverized the governor’s antiabortion legislative package. Martinez sought to recover by ordering a record by 2 Live Crew, “As Nasty As They Wanna Be,” removed from record store shelves in Dade County. A recent body of scholarly literature has extensively studied moonshining and the enforcement of federal liquor laws.1 Focusing mainly on the post-Reconstruction mountain South, historians have portrayed moonshiners as traditionalists who resisted federal liquor laws in order to “preserve a way of life that was being threatened by the centralizing forces then shaping America.“2 In one encompassing study, for example, Wilbur R. Miller raised the question: “What are the conditions under which unpopular laws can be enforced, and what are the limits of their enforcement?” After investigating this matter, Miller found that the universal hostility of Democratic state officials to …

Lieutenant Colonel John Wilder of the Union occupation force was stationed for most of the Civil War in Key West. A week after Robert E. Lee’s surrender at Appomattox he visited Cedar Key. Located near the mouth of the Suwannee River, Cedar Key was an important rendezvous point for refugees, Union troops, Confederate deserters, and Unionist sympathizers. On April 20, 1865, Wilder wrote his mother that when he arrived there were about 2,000 white refugees, a “great curiosity; crackers most of them— that is poor whites, not more intelligent or virtuous than the negroes.” He described them as “pale, cadaverous, …

In 1912 journalist Marc Goodnow visited the pine forests of north Florida seeking information for an article he was writing on the turpentine industry. Goodnow’s findings, which appeared in an exposé entitled “Turpentine: Impressions of the Convicts’ Camps of Florida,” shocked the nation. In the article Goodnow described how he stood in horror and watched as a black convict was forced to be a “runner” in a deadly game of hide and seek. In this weekly occurrence, which trained camp dogs to track down escaped convicts, the man was given a five-minute head start and then required to lead the …

Few figures in American history have inspired such an extraordinary amount of historical and biographical literature as Martin Luther King, Jr. Since his death in 1968, innumerable books have been written about King specifically or about his role in the civil rights movement. Suspending or removing public officials from office at any level of government and at any point in time always has provided cause for serious concern. Impeachments, suspensions, and removals of municipal, county, or federal officers cause two major constitutional issues to surface which must be resolved to the populace’s satisfaction. The first is the right of citizens, through the electoral process, to be guaranteed their legitimate representation and to remain the ultimate judge of all elected officials’ tenure in office. Carpetbagger reputations suffered greatly for most of the century following the end of Reconstruction. Within the past few decades, however, historians have reexamined the careers of many of these individuals and discovered that they made more positive contributions to southern life than previously thought.1 On the regional level this trend was exemplified by the 1988 publication of Richard N. Current’s Those Terrible Carpetbaggers: A Reinterpretation. In Florida, revisionist study was launched in the 1960s and 1970s when Joe M. Richardson and Jerrell H. On April 13, 1911, Representative Thomas F. West of Santa Rosa County introduced a joint resolution in Florida’s House of Representatives intended to amend the state constitution. 1 West’s proposal, designated as House Joint Resolution (HJR) 222, called for the adoption of two popular progressive-era reforms, the initiative and the referendum.2 Although strenuously opposed by a conservative minority in both legislative houses, HJR 222 achieved the necessary votes to gain passage with relative ease.
