Pensacola's Medical History: The Colonial Era, 1559-1821, William S. Coker

Florida Historical Quarterly

A number of studies have been written about various aspects of Panzacola’s / Pensacola’s medical history during the colonial era, which encompasses the first Spanish period (1559-1763), the British era (1763-1781), and the second Spanish presence (1781-1821). This essay attempts to synthesize the disparate studies of hospitals, doctors, patients, medicines, illnesses, diseases, and medical practices of colonial Pensacola. The cumulative record indicates that, despite their best efforts, medical practitioners encountered numerous problems, among them a shortage of personnel, funds, and medicine, as well as the prevalent fevers, over which they had no control.

East central Florida underwent a revolution in the 1950s as an army of 75,000 technicians, engineers, and scientists poured into the sleepy fishing communities stretching from Titusville to Melbourne along the Atlantic Coast.1 The year 1958 was one of significant change for the country and for Florida. In January, the United States launched its first satellite into orbit. In July, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed into law the bill creating the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). A month later the Defense Department’s Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) called for the creation of a new super-rocket code-named Saturn.2 Less attention …

Jacksonville Before Consolidation, James B. Crooks

At the inauguration of the new Jacksonville city-county consolidated government in October 1968, Local Government Study Commission Chairman James Jacqueline Daniel wrote that “Jacksonville had experienced a political renaissance.” Ten years later, Jacksonville mayor Hans Tanzler declared that consolidated government was “the salvation” of the city. In 1993, at the twenty-fifth anniversary celebration of consolidated government, then-Mayor Ed Austin called for rekindling “the spirit that drove the consolidation effort . . . because our form of government is the envy of cities around the world.” Tanzler, chairing that celebratory occasion, agreed, adding, “[c]onsolidation has been described as Jacksonville’s ‘Greatest Moment.’“

It is appropriate that this volume stresses Florida’s heritage of diversity because Samuel Proctor in his many contributions to this state’s history explored, wrote, taught, edited, and celebrated its rich variety of people and institutions. During his fifty-plus-year relationship with the University of Florida and his thirty years editing the Florida Historical Quarterly, Proctor nurtured research and edited histories of Native Americans, African Americans, immigrants, women, Jews, and other Floridians ranging from poor crackers to millionaire businessmen. Proctor also pioneered the use of oral history in this region, edited twenty-five facsimile volumes of rare books on Florida for the Florida …

The Spaniards prepared a list of householders soon after their victory over the British at Pensacola on May 10, 1781, although the exact date of the document is unknown. They used this list to wrap other documents and it carries a note: “Varios memoriales dentra y otros papeles en Yngles qe. u guardan pa. en caso de reclaman” (inside are various memorials and other English papers that are kept in case of claims).

The North American Southeast remained a wild borderland where Indian tribes, the United States, Spain, and Great Britain competed fiercely for supremacy. After the War of 1812 Spain kept a tenuous hold on Florida; however, Spanish authorities could not enforce peace on the border and were unable to prevent black slaves from fleeing to Florida and joining the Seminole Indians. Seen from Washington the peninsula was a natural appendage to the United States, and James Monroe’s administration hankered to possess it.

During the past several years, the Florida sugar industry has been under the journalist’s microscope and scrutinized as no other agricultural enterprise in America. In March of 1899, a prominent Spiritualist from Amelia, Ohio, J. Clegg Wright, sent a letter to a medium residing in Cassadaga, Florida. Wright informed Emma J. Huff that he planned to attend the following year’s Spiritualist convention in the Sunshine State. Congratulating her for having a “fairly good meeting this year,” he added: “It must be a hard region in which to sow the seed of progressive thought. The South Land is behind. How can bisexuality be represented in fiction in a way that is realistic and nuanced? This article presents five strategies of representing bisexuality in fiction, listed here as Implying, Demonstrating, Describing, Using Explicit Labels, and Having Conversations. These practical approaches highlight craft techniques that writers can implement in their own work. By articulating some of the ways in which bisexuality is already written in fiction, these strategies provide tools for writers to write bisexuality in ways that work against common stereotypes. These strategies are presented through an interdisciplinary lens, primarily relying upon Creative Writing Studies, …

Setting The Scene For Community-Based Learning: Creative Writing As A Platform For Inquiry And Integrative Learning, Adam Watkins

Journal of Creative Writing Studies

Creative writing pedagogy has received a surge of critical interest of late, though much remains to be said about its capacity to support trans-disciplinary learning outcomes, such as those related to community-based learning. Through an assessment of a place-based course focused on community-based learning, this article provides evidence that creative writing assignments can be an effective learning tool for cultivating community engagement and intercultural competencies. The educational value of creative writing, this study shows, has much to do with its unique mode of inquiry, which is well suited for integrating diverse perspectives, multi-modal research, and multiple ways of knowing.

Music software is becoming advanced enough to make it difficult for the average person to tell the difference between a MIDI mockup and a recording of an orchestra. This study compares the emotional responses subjects have to electronically created recordings to the emotional responses subjects have to orchestral recordings. Little research has been done on this subject. I hypothesized that the two recordings would communicate the same emotions, but the live recordings would create more emotional intensity. 65 subjects between the ages of 18 and 24 from various musical backgrounds were tested. Understanding The Benefits Of Latino Giving Circles: An Emancipatory Research Study, Adriana Loson-Ceballos

Dissertations

This dissertation shows how Latino giving circle members understand their philanthropy and how participation affects their well-being, civic engagement, and philanthropic activities by focusing on giving circles’ composition, members’ goals, and perceived benefits. I used an emancipatory research paradigm with Latino-focused critical race theory, LatCrit, to study the Latino Giving Circle Network (LGCN). A survey was used for data collection, and research platicas were employed in the survey’s analysis; both were selected and designed centering Latinos to overcome challenges in researching Latinos.

Demographic findings reveal a range of Latino experiences. Sixty-six percent reported Mexican ancestry, compared to 83% of California …

Calvin's significance in the development of federal theology has received much attention. Scholars have often neglected, however, the role that his exegesis played in his own construal of covenant ideas. More specifically, Calvin's reading of covenant in the book of Hebrews has played a negligible part in reconstructing Calvin's broader understanding of covenant. By looking closely at Calvin's exegesis and the terminological diversity in his commentaries on Hebrews 8–10, a more complex picture emerges. The federal terminology employed in these sections of his commentaries evidences exegetical sensitivity and doctrinal complexity. Calvin not only stands in the stream of Reformed covenant …

A range of interpretations can characterize supernatural legends as religious or non-religious—or somewhere in between. Religious audiences quickly categorize supernatural religious legends as such, but they hesitate when interpreting supernatural non-religious legends and supply multiple interpretations. Folk group paradigms influence these interpretations, and a variety of factors in turn influence which paradigms are used. The most important of these factors is a hierarchy of folk groups, which each individual has uniquely created and to which they refer when interpreting stories and experiences. When the most important of these folk groups fails to fully interpret a narrative, individuals will use folk …
