The eminent Samir Sayegh has contributed substantially to Arab modernism as a critic, historian, and artist himself.¹ His writings in Arabic are well known, through numerous journal articles, interviews, and most notably his 1988 book, Islamic Art: A Speculative Reading of Its Philosophy and Aesthetic Particularities.²
Further, his thinking impacted scores of students and colleagues in architecture or graphic design from the American University of Beirut, where he lectured from 2003 to 2007.

This article argues that since the 1970s a duality divides the concept of Islamic Art. On the one hand, we have Islamic Art as the subject matter of a modern mode of historical inquiry, invented and developed in the colonial period in Europe but then taken up by scholars from around the world, including Muslim academics. This is the Islamic Art of Islamic Art History as a field of secular scholarship.
But then, in the decolonization period, and more pronouncedly since the 1970s, we witness the birth of another concept of Islamic Art that is not focused on the past. …

A review of Basel Abbas and Ruanne Abou-Rahme’s installation Oh shining star testify at the 12th Berlin Biennale (2022), where the artists present Palestinian lives and deaths by disrupting the progressive chronologies of Palestine’s ongoing obliteration.
The essay considers the representation of racist epistemologies through recourse to the work of Saidiya Hartman and Fred Moten, while also situating the installation within a lineage of cultural productions that respond to the histories of genocide.

The exhibition Beirut and the Golden Sixties: A Manifesto of Fragility highlights what the curators argue is the fragility of the narrative surrounding Beirut’s “Golden Age” – the period leading up to Lebanon’s civil war.
This review traces the genesis of the exhibition and presents its displays at Berlin’s Gropius Bau and the MAC Lyon. Several works are showcased to demonstrate how the curators constructed the exhibition’s five sections, which focus on place, body, form, politics, and the Civil War.
The review offers contextualization for an exhibition rich in diverse artworks and archival materials that contain a multitude of narratives.

This article frames the history of anticolonialism in the Arab world as a history of gender, sex, and power. By thinking with early twentieth-century Arab intellectuals, it revises the assumption that the heterosexual body enters into politics primarily as a site of regulation and control. Europeans justified colonialism in the Arab East by arguing that Arabs were like children who needed tutelage before self-rule. Arab writers contested these temporal assumptions through their own theories of human development. Some figured childrearing as a form of temporal engineering through which Arab women would control human and civilizational growth. Others, like cosmopolitan Arab …

This is an overview of how creative writing is currently taught in Italy and of the reasons why this discipline is struggling to establish itself in public universities. After investigating the relationship between Italian academia and creative arts, I will look at the private nature of these courses in relation to issues of inclusion and diversity; and will highlight some of the pedagogical concerns deriving from having imported the anglophone model. The second conjunct of the Republic’s account of justice—that justice is “not meddling in the work of another”—has been neglected in Plato literature. This paper argues that the conjunct does more work than merely reiterating the content of the first conjunct—that justice is “doing one’s own work.” I argue that Socrates develops the concept at work in this conjunct from its introduction with the Principle of Specialization in Book II to its final deployment in the finished conception of justice in Book IV. The field of rhetorical aesthetics has a long and rich history. Despite that history, however, aesthetic artifacts have yet to be considered with the same weight that conventional rhetorical artifacts are. My project is to consider the rhetorical effectiveness of aesthetic artifacts, making a case for more inclusion of these types of artifacts in rhetorical theory. I will demonstrate the effectiveness of the aesthetic by performing a comparative analysis of both an aesthetic and conventional reaction to the 2019 fires at Notre Dame de Paris. The space is collaboratively managed by the Department of Art, Art History, and Design and the Library with the intent of providing students with valuable experience in curating and mounting exhibitions. In the past several years, the Tampa Bay area has experienced a reckoning with regard to the intentional erasure, destruction, and abandonment of historic African American cemeteries such as Zion Cemetery in Tampa or St. Matthews Baptist Church Cemetery in Clearwater. Scholars, journalists, community members, archaeologists, and others have contributed to a growing movement that aims to identify and document these sacred sites in an effort to prevent further destruction.
