Economic Impact Of Covid-19 On The Christian Camp Industry In 2020, Tori Beckwith Apr 2022

Economic Impact Of Covid-19 On The Christian Camp Industry In 2020, Tori Beckwith

Senior Honors Theses

This study seeks to develop a greater understanding of the economic impact of Covid-19 on the Christian camp industry in 2020. The sample used to conduct this study was 778 camps in the United States. These were subdivided into four population groups (list the four groups here in the parenthesis) for optimal comparison analysis. The 2020 camp’s operational status was assessed through a four-question quantitative survey on the Covid-19 impact. The survey was emailed to various camp organizations and uploaded to google forms for greater population exposure. A comparison was made between the 2020 camping year and the non-Covid-19 camping …

"A Woman's Lot To Suffer" : Recognizing The Intersectionality Of Oppression And Resistance In Min Jin Lee's Pachinko, Elianna Srikureja Apr 2022

"A Woman's Lot To Suffer" : Recognizing The Intersectionality Of Oppression And Resistance In Min Jin Lee's Pachinko, Elianna Srikureja

Honors Theses

Min Jin Lee's novel Pachinko (2017) portrays the historically based lives of a displaced Korean family during Japan's colonization of Korea from 1905-1945. The novel's attention to the ways that colonial endeavors complicate Confucian family and national structures exemplifies the interrelation between gender and racial oppression facing Lee's Korean women in both the public and private domain.

However, by centering female voices all too often silenced, Lee also depicts resistance modes that subvert such oppression. Using feminist and postcolonial theory, historical analysis, and close reading analysis, this project examines both the construction of oppression and the subversive resistance measures taken …

"In My End Is My Beginning": Families, Factions, Faith And Femininity As The Fatal Inheritance Of Mary Queen Of Scots, Mary Archbold Apr 2022

"In My End Is My Beginning": Families, Factions, Faith And Femininity As The Fatal Inheritance Of Mary Queen Of Scots, Mary Archbold

History & Classics Undergraduate Theses

Mary Stuart Queen of Scotland’s long imprisonment and tragic execution has long overshadowed the brilliance of her early political strategy. Crowned and anointed Queen as an infant, raised in France, Mary had the disadvantage of returning to Scotland into a complex and contentious court at the height of the Scottish Reformation and noble power. As a woman, she faced the misogyny and discrimination of her nobles and the prominent preacher, John Knox. Her devotion to her Catholic faith only gave her enemies further ammunition against her. Despite these daunting factors, she managed to maintain a political strategy of factionalism, with …

Augustan War And Peace: Analyzing The Role Of The Military In Maintaining The Pax Augusta In The Augustan Age, Maxwell Hovasse Apr 2022

Augustan War And Peace: Analyzing The Role Of The Military In Maintaining The Pax Augusta In The Augustan Age, Maxwell Hovasse

History & Classics Undergraduate Theses

The end of the Roman Republic was affected by decades of civil war, leaving the Roman population desperate for an end to the violence. Augustus’s rise to power was the solution for this violence. Augustus’s victory over Marc Antony both effectively ended the Roman Republic and the long period of civil unrest. As the new sole and undisputed ruler of the Roman world, Augustus sought to bring Rome into an era of peace, which would be known as the Pax Augusta, meaning the Augustan Peace. However, given that the Romans viewed peace as existing when an enemy had been completely …

Rebranding The Native: Selling The ‘Ideal’ Indigenous Worker At The Carlisle Indian Industrial School, 1879-1918, Luke Prior Apr 2022

Rebranding The Native: Selling The ‘Ideal’ Indigenous Worker At The Carlisle Indian Industrial School, 1879-1918, Luke Prior

History & Classics Undergraduate Theses

Brigadier General Richard Henry Pratt of the United States Army established the Carlisle Indian Industrial School in 1879, which was the foundation the United States federal government used to establish over twenty-five similar schools. From its founding to its closure in 1918, every aspect of the Carlisle School, whether curriculum or even football, sought to create an ‘ideal’ Indigenous worker that was sold to America as the new stereotypical Native American. To reach this goal, Carlisle stripped its students of their cultures by cutting their hair, changing their dress, restricting their use of native languages, and teaching from an American …

Hope contributes to positive development in adolescents, and religious and spiritual contexts may be particularly important for developing and supporting hope. However, extant literature on hope, religion, and spirituality neglects their synergistic relation, leaving questions about how they work together to support development. In this study, we explore how religiousness and spirituality (R/S) inform hope by identifying unique synergies that might be particularly useful in difficult contexts. Multilevel qualitative content analyses of interviews conducted with 18 thriving Salvadoran adolescents (50% female, Mage = 16.39 years, SD = 1.83) involved in a faith-based program provided evidence that the ideological and relational …

John Williams: Scoring And Interpreting Emotions In Film Music, Hadlee Lane Hubbard Apr 2022

John Williams: Scoring And Interpreting Emotions In Film Music, Hadlee Lane Hubbard

Senior Honors Theses

This research paper examines how John Williams’s film scores convey an emotional narrative to the audience. First, the literature review will discuss pertinent theories on film music and emotions informing the current research. The paper then establishes Williams’s composing style, and centers on his connection to the classical symphonic composers and to the film music of the Golden Age of Hollywood. The research then analyzes how John Williams’s music influences emotions in prominent scenes from several of his films including Jurassic Park, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and The Empire Strikes Back. Finally, the paper concludes with a …

A Rebuttal To The Word Of Faith Movement, Brant Wenger Apr 2022

A Rebuttal To The Word Of Faith Movement, Brant Wenger

Senior Honors Theses

The Word of Faith movement teaches that all believers will experience good health and wealth. Issues arise, however, when not all believers enjoy health and wealth like they were promised. The intent of this study is to examine the history of the Word of Faith movement and expose the falsehoods that are propagated by them. It is the position of this writer that the Word of Faith movement is grounded in the manipulation of Scripture and perverts the gospel preached by Jesus and His disciples. As a result, these teachings do not present a message of salvation but one that …

Music Is The Intervention: The Intersections Of Music As A Therapeutic Activity In At-Risk Youth, Gladys H. Gonzalez Landaverde Apr 2022

Music Is The Intervention: The Intersections Of Music As A Therapeutic Activity In At-Risk Youth, Gladys H. Gonzalez Landaverde

Senior Honors Theses

Across the United States, public schools face many discrepancies in the quality and caliber of education that a student can expect to receive. While schools try to address the vast needs of students, many children and adolescents are unfortunately faced with choosing between prioritizing their education and the circumstances faced outside of the school day. The discrepancies in schooling range from the quality in the commonly accepted core curriculum like English and mathematics to the opportunities offered outside of traditional academia like music. Unfortunately, at-risk students are unlikely to have access to music education in the same ease as their …

Beneath The Surface: A Memory Play On Asperger's Syndrome, Conner Case Apr 2022

Beneath The Surface: A Memory Play On Asperger's Syndrome, Conner Case

Senior Honors Theses

While academic, formal research proves to give readers an intellectual understanding of Asperger’s syndrome, this thesis serves as an approach to understanding the psychology of an Aspie on an emotional level. Through both research from peer-reviewed studies and the personal perception of an Aspie writer, a playwright develops a script inspired by the psychological aspects of Tennessee Williams’ memory play, The Glass Menagerie, to create an informative, yet engaging story about an Aspie protagonist. The playwright seeks to express that Aspies, despite their stereotypically cold exteriors, are emotionally complex individuals beneath the surface.

Anys D’Aprenentatge: Solfeig, Teoria, Harmonia I Contrapunt (¿I Si Tot Hagués Estat Un Malson Racista?), Antoni Pizà

Publications and Research

Explicitness And Rationale: Purposefulcommunication In Asynchronous Online Writing Tutor Sessions, Anna Rollins Apr 2022

Explicitness And Rationale: Purposefulcommunication In Asynchronous Online Writing Tutor Sessions, Anna Rollins

English Faculty Research

Introduction: In the February 2018 interview in The Chronicle of Higher Education “What’s Wrong with Writing Centers,” a tutoring strategy utilized frequently in the writing center setting was problematized: nondirective tutoring (Jacobs). Much writing center tutoring pedagogy advocates for a tutoring session to function as a conversation, with the tutor posing open-ended questions about a student’s writing and the student writer revising her own writing based upon answers formulated in response to the tutor’s particular, probing questions (Ryan and Zimmerelli). Nondirection as a tutoring strategy, though, has received pushback, and some argue that direct tutoring that provides students with explicit …

Fungal Chapel, Gabrielle Joy Cerberville Apr 2022

Fungal Chapel, Gabrielle Joy Cerberville

Masters Theses

FUNGAL CHAPEL is an interactive installation exploring the ties between people and place through the deconstructed visual language of Judeo-Christian religious iconography. Comprising five sculptures; BELFRY, OFFERTORY, BAPTISMAL, DOORWAY, and ALTAR, visitors are encouraged to interact on multiple levels of physical touch and consciousness, including pouring water, self-expression through writing, interacting with sonified fungal biodata, meditation, and offering and receiving gifts. Most of the objects in the chapel are “sounding sculptures” hooked up to contact microphones with added effects, and can be manipulated to produce a variety of musical sounds. Through the process of semi-guided ritual as an individual moves …

A-Z Database List Review: Getting Started And Keeping The Momentum, Sonali Sugrim Apr 2022

A-Z Database List Review: Getting Started And Keeping The Momentum, Sonali Sugrim

Publications and Research

Libraries have multiple portals to access their electronic resources. At Queens College, the two access portals are the catalog, Ex-Libris’ Primo, and Springshare’s A-Z Database List. The most recent comprehensive review of the A-Z Database List was conducted five years ago by the previous electronic resources librarian. As such, the list had multiple formats for displaying information and lacked consistency. The supporting information for the overall layout of the list was not helpful to users nor library staff. Users should be able to search for the resources they want without getting bogged down by unnecessary jargon, inconsistencies, and fluff.

It …

Missiological Intelligence: Taking Cultural Intelligence To A New Level In Guanacaste, Costa Rica, Adam Vaughan Apr 2022

Missiological Intelligence: Taking Cultural Intelligence To A New Level In Guanacaste, Costa Rica, Adam Vaughan

Doctor of Ministry (DMin)

Many people thrive on the mission field while others seem to flounder. This includes some missionaries who must return to their home country prematurely. The correlation between flourishing and floundering for missionaries on the field is not necessarily limited to a lack of passion, biblical knowledge, effort, or even language proficiency. All missionaries need a comprehensive set of tools, and one that has been seriously neglected in missiological training is Cultural Intelligence (CQ). CQ is a modality of intelligence within the umbrella of Social Intelligence, as categorized under the Multiple Intelligence Theory. With the rapid increase of globalization, those who …

The Prevalence Of Unaddressed Trauma In The Lives Of Ministerial Leaders And Pastoral Care-Oriented Steps To Greater Spiritual And Emotional Health, Deanna D. Shrodes Apr 2022

The Prevalence Of Unaddressed Trauma In The Lives Of Ministerial Leaders And Pastoral Care-Oriented Steps To Greater Spiritual And Emotional Health, Deanna D. Shrodes

Doctor of Ministry (DMin)

Ministerial leaders carry an abundance of responsibility in innumerable areas while simultaneously managing life-threatening crises at the same time. They provide pastoral care for those they serve in addition to overseeing a plethora of areas such as discipleship, program development, fundraising, and conflict management. Pastoral leaders often keep unhealthy and unsustainable schedules and receive inadequate compensation particularly in comparison to their professional counterparts. The weight of the ministry alone lends itself to stress and burnout if the leader is not careful to maintain adequate self-care. If unaddressed trauma is present along with all of the stressors commonly found in the …

Intentional Male Allies/Advocates: How Male Leaders Can Successfully Champion Female Ministers In The Assemblies Of God U.S.A., Saehee H. Duran Apr 2022

Intentional Male Allies/Advocates: How Male Leaders Can Successfully Champion Female Ministers In The Assemblies Of God U.S.A., Saehee H. Duran

Doctor of Ministry (DMin)

While the Assemblies of God (AG) endorses women in ministry through its position paper and bylaws, a dichotomy has existed between its egalitarian theology and practice since its inception in 1914. One key to narrowing such a gap involves intentional and countercultural male leaders who actively train, empower, affirm, and mentor women called to ministerial leadership. This research defines biblical egalitarian leadership, identifies exemplary female leaders and their male champions in the Old and New Testaments, and explores the best practices of male allyship for female leaders through a literature review and a qualitative survey of active AG male allies …
