From Spark And Flame: A Study Of The Origins Of Gunpowder Firearms, Avery D. Shepherd
From Spark And Flame: A Study Of The Origins Of Gunpowder Firearms, Avery D. Shepherd
Tenor of Our Times
All modern civilizations look to gunpowder for their weapons of war. Few advancements have been able to match their destructive capabilities, versatility, and ease of production. While it is clear to see the modern usage of the advancement, gunpowder’s origins have been debated over centuries. A study of gunpowder is a study of alchemy throughout the middle ages and across the known world. That study begins in China around the 9th century, where the invention is developed into a weapon of war. Advancements in gunpowder weapons continued as the neighboring Mongols took the technology for themselves. From there, the Westward …

Glenn Curtiss: Master Of Sky And Sea, Paxton Davis
Tenor of Our Times
Glenn Curtiss Was a pioneer in American aviation who despite not being the most well-known, made contributions that lead to new realms for airplane development. In his early life, he owned a bicycle shop, and was an impressive motorcycle racer. Through this, he learned how to create lightweight, powerful engines. Curtiss then used this knowledge to improve upon the capabilities of the airplane. Curtiss's airplane designs helped him win several races around the world and gave him new ideas about aviation development. Some of his most significant contributions went to naval aviation with his invention of the hydroplane and the …

The Work Of The Women: The Misogyny Of The Contagious Disease Acts And The Women Who Opposed Them., Graceann Green
Tenor of Our Times
In 1866 the Contagious Disease Acts were passed in England, these Acts were set into place in order to reduce the number of venereal diseases that were being contracted by military men living in garrison towns and naval dockyards. The Acts however, only targeted women at the heart of the issue and allowed for nonconsensual, unethical, and violating medical examinations to be conducted in women who were suspected of prostitution. This paper gives a glimpse into some of the women and their works who were instrumental in the efforts to repeal the Acts and improve the rights and lives of …

Johnson And The Old Roman: Comesky, Johnson, The Black Sox, And The Emergence Of Kenesaw Mountain Landis, Isaac Copeland
Tenor of Our Times
An investigation into the Black Sox Scandal's effect on the rivalry between Ban Johnson and Charles Comiskey, and the appointment of Judge Kennisaw Mountain Landis as the Commissioner for Major League Baseball. The Black Sox Scandal was an intersection for many powerful men of the early 20th century in Baseball and Gambling, as well as the battleground for one of the great unknown rivalries in Baseball: between the American League Commissioner Ban Johnson, and White Sox owner Charles Comiskey. Both men sought to destroy the other and used everything in their means to bring the other down.
Collaborative, Conflicted, And Complicit: A Case Study Of Church And State Tension And Its Effect On Lisbon, Josh Brooks
Collaborative, Conflicted, And Complicit: A Case Study Of Church And State Tension And Its Effect On Lisbon, Josh Brooks
Tenor of Our Times
For as long as the Catholic Church interacted with the monarchs of other countries, both factions tried to assert authority over each other. In the case of Lisbon, the Church and State tension manifested itself in both factions fighting for control in Lisbon's trading sphere and education, or working in apparent collaboration in the form of the Inquisition. Due to these factors, the government and the Catholic church slowly started to erode Lisbon into a place where they were weak, whether it came from the Inquisition's persecution, or deteriorating the institutions of Lisbon. By looking at this case study of …

The Pandemic's Impact On The Efficacy Of Chaplaincy At The Baldwin State Prison, John Gomez
The Pandemic's Impact On The Efficacy Of Chaplaincy At The Baldwin State Prison, John Gomez
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Chaplains usually provide pastoral care for inmates, staff members, and counseling for offenders and offenders’ families. Because of the pandemic, they have not provided adequate pastoral care and counseling in their respective facilities. The restrictions imposed by the pandemic have negatively impacted the chaplain’s ability to adequately provide pastoral care and counseling in most federal and state correctional institutions. The Department of Georgia Correctional facilities, particularly at the Baldwin State prison, has also experienced this decrease in pastoral care and counseling due to the pandemic. In the Georgia Department of Corrections, all visitations, including lawyers and clergy, have been suspended …
Pastoral Leadership: The Importance Of Succession Planning Development And Transition In Our Local Churches, Michelle Renee Jenkins
Pastoral Leadership: The Importance Of Succession Planning Development And Transition In Our Local Churches, Michelle Renee Jenkins
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
A pastoral succession plan will address the issues of who will be responsible for leading the respective congregation if something happens to the current Pastor. Without clear direction, leaders leave their flocks in precarious positions. The problem is that churches may not have a concise succession plan to identify a qualified leader to take up the leadership mantle. The study will lay the foundation from a biblical perspective on the importance of identifying a leader’s successor and the advantages of providing a smooth transition for the assembly. The research will stress the importance of pastors not only identifying their successors …
To Stay Or Step Down: Assessing The Pastoral Qualifications Of Pastors With Prodigal Children, P. Kevin Garber
To Stay Or Step Down: Assessing The Pastoral Qualifications Of Pastors With Prodigal Children, P. Kevin Garber
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The pastor’s home life is a reflection of his ability to effectively lead Christ’s church. Two seminal New Testament passages (I Timothy 3:1-7, Titus 1:5-9) address, among other qualifications, the behavior and testimony of the pastor’s children. This vital aspect of a pastor’s leadership within the home must be given important emphasis and due consideration. With an examination of the nuances of these two seminal passages, exploration of published literature relevant to this topic, and an in-depth investigation of three pastoral case studies, the writer will offer a resource for pastors and parishioners who are facing the dilemma of whether …
A Qualitative Phenomenological Study In Perceived Experiences That Enhanced Gospel Zeal In Christian Educational Leaders, Arlynne Gail Perley-Huebscher
A Qualitative Phenomenological Study In Perceived Experiences That Enhanced Gospel Zeal In Christian Educational Leaders, Arlynne Gail Perley-Huebscher
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to investigate and reveal the perceived experiences that enhanced Gospel zeal in Christian educational leaders in ministry. Scholarly studies reflect that contemporary ministry trends affect Christian educational leaders' longevities (Barna, 2020a) but do not address effects on Gospel zeal. The researcher cites Ryle (1880, Chapter One, Para. 2) regarding the Gospel zeal phenomenon, “Zeal in Christianity is a burning desire to please God, to do His will, and to advance His glory in the world in every possible way. It is a desire, which is not natural to men or women. It …
