I recently asked some of my fellow poets what the purpose of poetry is to them. The consensus? Sharing experience and meaning with the reader. But what is the point of sharing these ideas if there is no one with whom to share? Poetry readers are dwindling in numbers for two main reasons: the first being that most people believe poetry to be elitist because they have only read poetry from the periods where this was true; the second reason is that “poetry” is widely available to the common person in the form of music. Connecting Old Techniques With New Ideas, Brendan Ryan

Metalworking is an ancient field that provides numerous methods to create a similar outcome. This semester I’ve been studying several traditional techniques in jewelry making while attempting to incorporate my own designs. The techniques that I have been focusing on are casting and stone-setting. For casting, I have been experimenting with both lost-wax casting and sand-casting in order to create thoughtful, one-of-a-kind works. Casting is often the best method to use when creating organic designs. My designs include snakes and historic Viking imagery that is often easier to create by carving wax and manipulating sand molds.

Folk dance appears around the world and much of the time what these performers wear becomes the most famous image of a nation or country. Mexico folklorico spans throughout the nation. Its regions are home to a variety of iconic looks that vary even more so within each subculture. The image of the many folk dresses of Mexico is unmistakable and rooted in both the indigenous cultures and the colonial Spanish ties of the nation, both of which can still be visually traced back today in modern folklorico. My process begins with an idea, the content of the piece. The Gilded Cage depicts human beings’ tendency to recede within - or “cage” - themselves when faced with the world’s perceived afflictions and villains. However, in doing this, they are also kept from life’s splendor. The Gilded Cage is an installation work that creates an atmosphere. I used cage iconography and imagery to convey the intangible space which people construct as internal spaces of protection. The metallic luster and sumptuousness of the liquid gold leaf juxtaposed against the blood-red microcrystalline wax enhances the piece’s tension and duality. The gilding …

This project was the core of creating an experience-based learning opportunity focusing on the communication and policy promotion aspect of political campaigns. It is about a sustainability efforts campaign that lets students have a voice in the future of Lindenwood. It focused on gathering background information about students' opinions regarding decision-making processes and the techniques that the University uses in the future. The central part of the project was focused on implementing this research.
