On Friday, May 3, 1901, most of Jacksonville's downtown business and residential district was destroyed by fire. Mary L'Engle telegraphed her father, J.C. L'Engle, who represented Duval County in the State House: "Big fire Jax. Our three houses burned. We staying at Westmoreland Hotel. Fire still burning." In Tallahassee, Governor William S. Jenning received a telegram from an unknown correpondent: "The city of Jacksonville in flames. Armory destroyed. I think it would be advisable to send four companies [of militia] to the city at once."

Serious scholarly invetigation of slavery in Florida began with the 1973 publication of Julia Floyd Smith's Slavery and Plantation Growth in Antebellum Florida, 1821-1860. In her own way Smith was a pioneer. She was the first to lay out the basic contours of slavery's history in Florida, and she grounded her narrative on extensive use of archival records, census data, traveler's accounts, legislation, and even slave narratives. Her focus was restricted to the American slaveholders who poured into middle Florida after 1821 and who thereafter extended the southern frontier of the cotton belt. She framed her book within the literature …

Jacksonville's consolidation with Duval County on October 1, 1968, marked a major turning point in the history of this northeastern Florida coastal city. Prior to this event, Jacksonville and the surrounding Duval County struggled with a variety of problems. Despite rapid growth in the metro area, the city lost population, endured racial conflict, and suffered substantial environmental pollution. While other Southern cities faced many of the same problems, the glamour that soon shone upon the Sunbelt seemed to elude this city on the St. Johns River. Partly it was comparative. The drainage of the Florida Everglades haw been a highly debated issue since the mid-nineteenth century. In the 1840s, the United State Congress and the state of Florida passed legislation that encouraged reclamation.1 Nothing came from that effort, but during the next decade Congress began transferring Everglades land to the state of Florida, stipulating that all earnings made from the lands be reinvested in their reclamation.2 To manage the development of these lands, in 1855, the state created an Internal Improvement Fund and appointed trustees who oversaw projects that the Sunshine State hoped would attract people, capital, and agricultural developers. …

Several scholars have offered information and opinions on the date of construction of the Spanish stone fort and stone watchtower at San Marcos de Apalache.1 Two Spanish dedication tablets from the fort, presently in the collection of the Henry Morrison Flagler Museum, Palm Bach, have been cited in these attempts at temporal assignment, but there has been no scholarly attempt to doument the tablets or translate inscriptions on them.2 This essay presents information on the tablets, a transcription of the engraved tablet, comparison with similar architectural features, and some thoughts on the dating of the tablets and their bearing on …

In reviewing works on Florida territorial history, well-known scholar Herbert J. Doherty Jr. noted in 1958 that many individual church histories had been written but most were "not good history." Even though he later conceded that Catholic and some Protestant denominations were "adequately treated" in denominational history survey, a true religious history-one that synthesizes church histories- remain unavailable. The role of religion on Florida's territorial frontiers is largely hidden from history.

One of the least known and seldom chronicled military events in American history in the three-year conflict known as the Third Seminole War. Also labeled the Billy Bowlegs War, this final uprising of the Seminole tribe occurred in South Florida between 1855 and 1858. Few of the military outposts established during the war remain; the enduring legacy of most is a roadside marker or street sign. "Catching Smoke" is a creative nonfiction essay collection that focuses on living in the south and the hardships associated with matters of poverty, addiction, incarceration, and family cycles. This collection ponders all the ways that the concept of smoke affected my family's life and gives multiple meanings to the phrase and title "Catching Smoke." Artifacts (pictures, letters, etc.) are used throughout to express a family narrative concerned with keeping a record, destroying family secrets, and examining the "shadows" of truth.

My main aim is to define assertiveness, to distinguish assertiveness from aggressiveness, and to raise the question of whether we should be assertive. Most articles on assertiveness are from the field of psychology. In psychology, assertiveness is defined as a healthy way of expressing oneself. But what does assertiveness mean? How should we define assertiveness and is assertiveness desirable, or is it closely connected to aggressiveness? Should we say that assertiveness is a part of our character, an innate quality, or an acquired skill? Observational drawing has many benefits, yet it can be a difficult and frustrating curriculum for students and teachers alike. As I was teaching elementary and college art classes simultaneously, I noticed a significant discrepancy between my younger and older students. Students in my elementary art classes loved to draw and often expressed how excited they were to make art. However, students in my college art classes were more hesitant and self-conscious about drawing and did not believe they could progress artistically. The First World War altered the view of masculinity held by many in Germany and shredded what many regarded as unchangeable fixtures of German life. For German men, much of the interwar period meant dealing with the losses from the war, reconfiguring what it meant to be a man. This reconfiguration of gender took place in a context of change in Germany. Many women entered the workforce to replace the lost men. The economic downturn and reliance on funding from the United States motivated many within Germany to examine gender roles and to reassemble masculinity to meet changing circumstances.
