Reading The Traumatic Moment: The Role Of Socioeconomic Systems In The Color Purple And The Bluest Eye, Andrea Doll

Undergraduate Theses

There are many points of sameness between Alice Walker's The Color Purple and Toni Morrison's The Bluest Eye. Both novels occur in the mid-20th century and focus on protagonists within the same race, gender, and relative class. Of all the similarities between the texts, the most influential is the trauma, sexual and otherwise, shared between Pecola Breedlove and Celie. Most notably, both characters experience incestuous rape resulting in pregnancy shortly after their first menstruation. Despite their numerous shared events and attributes, what occurs after their sexual trauma differs drastically for each character. At the end of The Color Purple …

Honors College Theses

Historians of the Civil Rights Movement in Georgia have primarily focused on how the national movement unfolded in the city of Atlanta. More recent scholarship has highlighted the role Martin Luther King Jr. played in Albany; however, many of these analyses focus on figures within the larger movement rather than focusing on local, grassroots organizers. Additionally, their primary focus tends to be on the role of Black men, leaving behind the voices of Black women who led alongside them. Through a Long Civil Rights Movement (LCRM) approach, I argue that Black women in Savannah, Georgia played an instrumental role in …

There exists a multitude of definitions and concepts that describe the movement between and from one linguistic code to the next, commonly referred to as code-switching. Each definition given differs not only between fields of research but also within said fields of research, making it incredibly difficult to create one unified definition for code-switching. The two most popular fields of research that have extensively studied code-switching are sociolinguistics and literature/literary studies, with both fields having basic tenets of study that create different nuances in how code-switching is described by researchers in each respective field of study. Three years ago, at the Russia-Africa Summit in Sochi, Russian President Vladimir Putin promised African leaders that Russo-African relations would be based on respect of territorial and national sovereignty. After the summit, both sides signed military and other agreements, something that would be beneficial to Russia in the future.

A case in point has been Africa’s response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

“A Woman ‘In The Snow Among The Clocks And Instruments’”: How Adrienne Rich Reimagined The Lives Of Women Astronomers, Ashley Q. Lear, Kayla D. Taylor

In 1968, Adrienne Rich, the renowned feminist, poet, and author of Diving Into the Wreck and Of Woman Born, celebrated the career of Caroline Herschel and other women in the scientific community by writing “Planetarium.” The dedication reads, “Thinking of Caroline Herschel (1750-1848) astronomer, sister of William; and others.” At the time, Rich was struggling with her own experiences as a mother and wife to a fellow academic. Like many career women in the 1960s, her identities were often in competition with one another for her time and attention, and the additional obstacles that came with being a trail …
