Dartmouth Global Health Equity In Rwanda: An Oral History, Joseph Martinelli
Dartmouth Global Health Equity In Rwanda: An Oral History, Joseph Martinelli
Dartmouth College Master’s Theses
After the genocide in Rwanda in 2014, there were as few as 100 physicians left to provide health care for the entire country. The Rwandan Ministry of Health reached out to US academic institutions for assistance in rebuilding capacity and educating Rwanda’s next generation of medical professionals. The Human Resources for Health (HRH) program in Rwanda was instituted and led by the Rwandan Ministry of Health with support from the Clinton Health Access Initiative. The Geisel School of Medicine led by its Center for Global Health Equity, participated in the HRH program in Rwanda, from 2012 to 2019. This oral …

From Tiktok To Transcendence: Reclaiming Focus Through Contemplative Education, Araceli Gordus Huizar
Knowledge and Creativity Expo
In an era shaped by the attention economy and digital technology, students in higher education navigate constant stimulation that fragments attention, increases stress, and challenges emotional regulation. Research in psychology and neuroscience suggests that chronic exposure to social media, AI tools, and multitasking environments contributes to divided attention and diminished cognitive performance. While institutional responses, such as phone bans, attempt to manage distraction, they often fail to cultivate the internal capacities necessary for sustained focus and meaningful learning.
This paper argues that contemplative education--grounded in Buddhist and Hindu contemplative traditions and informed by humanistic psychology and contemporary mindfulness-based interventions--offers a …

Odu Love Permanent Outdoor Public Sculpture Research/Proposal, Cristina N. White
Knowledge and Creativity Expo
For the Knowledge and Creativity Expo, I am proposing the installation of an official Virginia LOVEworks sign on the Old Dominion University campus, supervised by faculty member John Roth. This project is part of my own undergraduate research for becoming a public artist. This endeavor will assist in practical and direct training on submitting concepts in a Public Art RFP (Request for Proposal) for municipal, state and/or regional public sculptures, as well as avenues to obtain funding to execute and establish a successful career as a public artist.
As a Carnegie R1 research institution, ODU has a unique opportunity to …

Two Wrestlers: An Unrealized Herculean Pendant To Michelangelo’S David, Theodore Mayberry
Two Wrestlers: An Unrealized Herculean Pendant To Michelangelo’S David, Theodore Mayberry
Knowledge and Creativity Expo
Following the completion of Michelangelo’s David 1504, Gonfalonier Piero Soderini presented the emerging Florentine artist with a proposal for a second statue on behalf of Florence’s government: a statue of Hercules to stand alongside the David at the entrance of the Palazzo Vecchio. Michelangelo readily accepted, however the commission never came to be; what remains of Michelangelo’s vision for the Herculean pendant now resides in the Casa Buonarroti Museum of Florence: a rough terracotta model of Hercules and Cacus. Upon review of the scholarship documenting Michelangelo’s unrealized Hercules as well as his David, an intriguing pattern can be observed …
Voice And Pain: Representations Of Disability In Adaptations Of “The Little Mermaid”, Ace Molloy
Voice And Pain: Representations Of Disability In Adaptations Of “The Little Mermaid”, Ace Molloy
Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects
Hans Christian Andersen’s 1837 story, “The Little Mermaid,” is a popular fairy tale that has been adapted several times by writers, filmmakers, and game developers. It is one of the few fairy tales with explicit portrayals of disability; the mermaid in the tale is nonspeaking and experiences chronic pain, as well as being a mermaid—a nonnormative figure who is aligned with disability. This paper looks at the ways that the mermaid is portrayed in literary, film, and new media adaptations from a disability-justice perspective. Examining multiple representations of the character, I argue that while feminist adaptations erase her disability and …

"Bibliotherapy In Counseling, Spirituality, And Self-Care-How Reading The Right Book Can Heal", Michelle P. Cross
English
Bibliotherapy can be used as an integral component of mental and emotional self-care, spiritual growth, and professional therapy. Reading can be instrumental for sharpening mental acuity, alleviating depression, and furthering spiritual journeys. Bibliotherapy can provide a modicum of treatment to those who cannot access traditional clinics or religious/spiritual centers.

Our research into the online clothing shopping industry has revealed an opportunity to mobilize the strengths of online shopping to build an in-person community. One company we researched, Poshmark, a social, peer-to-peer resale app, uses the strengths of social media to create an online community-based secondhand clothing market. However, one of the largest problems facing society today is the ease of replacing human connection with screen time in today’s world. Online shopping provides convenience, variety, and a larger reach than traditional stores do. However, the human element is often lost. Our company seeks to take the goal of Poshmark to …
