Women’s participation in business enterprises has attracted much attention from policy makers, researchers, NGOs, politicians, the government sector, and international agencies. This is because it has been identified that women’s involvement in income generation tends to boost family income, support children’s education, improve health of family members, provide food, build assets for the family, and contribute to general development of economies. Does Entrepreneur Gender Matter For Entrepreneurial Motivation: Answers From Micro Small And Medium Enterprises (Msmes) Of Assam, Ankita Sarmah, Bedabrat Saikia, Dhananjay Tripathi

With regard to SGD-5, this study attempts to examine the association between entrepreneur’s gender and their entrepreneurial motivation and to discover if entrepreneur’s gender influences the motivation. The study further tries to see if entrepreneurial motivation varies on the grounds of entrepreneur’s gender. Based on a qualitative approach, the study uses interview data of 320 MSME entrepreneurs from Assam, India. Two hypotheses—there is no association between entrepreneur’s gender and the entrepreneurial motivation (H01) and there is no significant difference between the mean rank of male and female entrepreneurs with respect to their motivational factors (H02)—are postulated and tested using Chi-Square …

While modern-day Florida conjures images of Disney World and sunny beaches, the black experience in the Sunshine State from around 1880 to 1930 was not so bright. Race relations in Florida were equal to, if not harsher than, other Southern states. Consequently, understanding race relations in Florida must be contextualized in reference to the mores, traditions, and values that governed the South as a whole and wreaked terror against black people in large measure.2

American author Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings described her adopted home in north-central Florida as "an enchanted land." Her love for her surroundings was evident in rich descriptions of the seasons, the forces of nature, and the lives of the people around her. Immediately upon arrival in 1928 at Cross Creek, a tiny hamlet about twenty miles southeast of Gainesville, Rawlings immersed herself in the local hunting and fishing culture. She came to understand and appreciate the lifestyle of the people of the nearby "Big Scrub" country, who depended on the land for their survival. Along with this understanding, Rawlings came to …

Floridians have always had complex, contentious, and dynamic relationships with the Everglades. Most Floridians in the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century saw the Everglades as a wasteland and supported draining useless swamp in order to facilitate economic progress. The publication of Marjory Stoneman Douglas' The Everglades: River of Grass (1947) and the advent of modern environmentalism encouraged Floridians to reconsider the identity and value of the Everglades, seeing it as a 'river of grass' that needed protection and restoration. These two views, however, only scratch the surface of the multiplicity of ways Floridians have perceived and interacted with …

In his song Miami 2017, Billy Joel imagined Miami, Florida, as a refuge for an impending apocalypse. In the narrative, or diegesis, Joel builds, Miami is never mentioned. But as Joel describes how dangerous New York has become in this futuristic scenario, the city's citizens, we are led to believe, will once again flee south, just as the song tells us they did almost eight years earlier.

Calvin Stowe once conversed with Goethe on his Florida porch. His wife Harriet Beecher Stowe, well-known author of Uncle Toms Cabin, set up this context when she first explored Orange Park in the spring of 1867 and found an enthralling climate and landscape inclined to mix the actual with the imagined. By 1868 the Stowes purchased a house on the St. Johns River in Mandarin and by 1872 completed renovations, most significantly the porch. For Harriet, this open-air space-she called it her "veranda"-harbored dreams and visions for writerly inspiration. On the porch, Calvin reads, translates, and hallucinates while Harriet listens …

To many scholars, the West Florida Revolt of 1810 served merely as a transitional period in American history. As Andrew McMichael points out in Atlantic Loyalties, the eastern Spanish borderlands of Louisiana and the Floridas suffered constant upheaval in the 40 years between 1778 and 1818. Late in October of 1810, as citizens and statesmen throughout the United States focused almost entirely on an imminent conflict with Great Britain and apprehensively monitored Napoleon's armies in Europe, the president of the United States, James Madison, quickly convened an emergency session of his cabinet members. Great Britain and Napoleon were not, however, the reason for calling the secret cabinet meeting.
