Nestled along the shore of Biscayne Bay five miles south of Miami is the community of Coconut Grove. Founded in the 1870s, it sits atop a limestone ridge and still has a sizeable hardwood hammock (tropical forest). The location, the shade, and the availability of fresh water were certainly a lure to early settlers. One early settler it attracted was John Thomas 'Jolly Jack" Peacock, who lived in the bight which was named after him as 'Jack's Bight."

Beryl Oates* was nineteen years old when Deputy Sheriff James Allen Black arrested her just after 10:00 am on a Saturday morning in February 1944 on suspicion of having a venereal disease. She was detained until she could be seen by Doctor and Captain Solomon Kolack who worked for the US Public Health Service as the disease control officer for Orange County, Florida. When he saw her, Kolack would have tested Beryl for syphilis and, if she tested positive, she would have probably been confined in the rapid treatment center in Ocala for a lengthy and painful course of arsenic …

Today, Florida boasts important venues for the performing arts. Orlando is ringed by dozens of theme parks that furnish entertainment for masses of people seeking to sample "popular" culture. These popular forms of entertainment are a backdrop for the somewhat smaller stage of "elite" or "serious" performing arts: Ringling's Asolo Center for the Performing Arts in Sarasota and the Fringe Theater Festival in Miami, which attract thousands of people each year, are examples. These are two faces of the same human need for performance before an audience, and for spaces to gather the audiences.

A Liberated Journalist And Yankee Women On The Florida Frontier, John T. Foster, Jr

Journalist Ellen Augusta Hill wrote an unusual newspaper column for two years in the 1880s- one that contains both her own extraordinary ideas and many of those of her rural readers. By tracing the journalist's effort and the response it helped to generate, a picture emerges of women who have received little attention in Florida history. Neither Hill nor her followers were native-born Floridians, or even Southerners. They were Yankee women who came from New York and, perhaps surprisingly, from both Ohio and Illinois. The topics covered by Hill and the dialogue engendered departed from earlier journalistic activities in Florida. …

The role of Florida's interior settlements and relatively modest settler population has never been assigned much historical significance vis-a-vis the Second Seminole War (1835-1842). With few exceptions, the historiography has focused on the military aspects of this protracted conflict, with certain key battles, military commanders, Native American leaders, and the destruction of the east coast sugar plantations garnering the most interest.2 The ramifications of President Andrew Jackson's Indian Removal Act (1830) which celebrated the prospect of placing "a civilized population on large tracts of country now occupied by a few savage hunters"3 are well-known, along with the treaties of Moultrie …

Community radio is a community-led broadcasting service that serves as a tool for development for communities around the world. This research study explores the development benefits of community radio in the United States using a case study of Federal Communications Commission (FCC)-licensed FM community radio stations to evaluate the role of community radio in communication and information sharing and promoting sustainable social change and development. To fulfill the objectives of the case study, data was collected from 55 community radio stations in the United States using mixed-questionnaire digital surveys and supplementary virtual interviews. This paper displays analysis of the songs I performed for my required graduate recital. The goal was to break down the challenges of the music, which included sets from Johannes Brahms, Francis Poulenc, Samuel Barber, John Musto, and Franz Joseph Haydn. My hopes are for people to see how I performed this recital from both a technical and emotional standpoint.

This paper centers around the treatment of Walt Whitman's poetry in Ned Rorem’s War Scenes, Kurt Weill’s Four Walt Whitman Songs, and Ethan McGrath’s Four Whitman Settings. In this paper, these works are explored through formal and textual analysis along with investigating the backgrounds of the works and their composers. Further background information will include wider discussions on form and compositional history. In addition, the technical considerations and challenges of singing the selected songs will be examined.

Medieval Feminist Forum: A Journal of Gender and Sexuality

The penultimate verse of Henryson’s Testament of Cresseid suggests the possibility that Troilus raised a monument in memory of his former love, Cresseid: “Sum said he maid ane tomb of merbell gray” (l. 603). Examining the political implications of this uncertain act of memorialisation, this article considers how Henryson's poem mobilises the reader's emotional response to constitute Cresseid as a mourned subject, whose subjectivity is recognised only insofar as it is limited to suffering and death. In doing so, the Testament also establishes a subjectivity for women that offers conditional tolerance predicated on respectable behaviour, contributing to the historical production …
