This presentation explores hegemonic societies in the Caribbean and the Southern Cone of Latin America as framed by the cultural phenomenon of high queer visibility in four films: Fresa y chocolate (1995) by Tomás Gutiérrez Alea and Juan Carlos Tabío, Antes que anochezca (2000) by Julian Schnabel, El beso de la mujer araña (1985) by Héctor Babenco, and Hoy quiero volver solo (2014) by Daniel Ribeiro. It examines the social consequences that each of the main characters must pay to their hegemonic societies because of this visibility. This presentation investigates Spanish feminist themes and how two authors—Emilia Pardo Bazán and Dolores Ibárruri—affected the role of women in their society during Franco’s regime. This presentation will discuss the main themes contributed by these two authors and how they fought against Francoism, Franco’s society, and the chauvinistic ideas and rules created for women during the regime.

After decades of political instability left the people of Nicaragua to suffer with homelessness and poverty, the government turned to the tourism industry as a last effort to generate much-needed revenue, which had initially promised economic results. This essay will argue that the tourism industry was developed unsustainably for local populations and explain how the government's push for a tourism industry focused only on the needs of the tourists visiting their country rather than the needs of the locals participating in the tourism industry.

This essay analyzes the underlying causes of the socioeconomic and income inequalities from which Chile still suffers. Moving through a brief historical analysis, it discusses such inequalities from the perspective of the 2019 protests. Finally, the essay identifies three primary potential causes of the unrest and inequality. The unequal education system, unstable political institutions, and disagreement of the management of valuable natural resources all exist as a barrier to achieving a satisfactory level of equality among the people of Chile.

Asking questions about what Painting is in the 21st century and the dominant narratives it can challenge, my paintings complicate the viewer’s reading of pictorial hierarchy and the projection of human relations in the world. I de-hierarchize and decentralize the compositional components that make up a painting by using patterns to create spatial depth, not European perspectival conventions. In dialogue with modernists such as Matisse who drew from the visual vocabulary of “The Orient”, my central forms derived from architecture and ornamental fragments possess a body-like presence. Norm and the People is a 90-minute hybrid film about the Minister and activist Norman Eddy and the work he and other activists did in Spanish Harlem from the 1940s through his death in 2013. The film is told through interviews, archival photos and videos, reenactments, and puppets.

Beside Yingzao: An Index Of Chinese Building Traditions, Tianyi Hang

Masters of Environmental Design Theses

Yingzao referred to the Chinese architectural practice prior to the nineteenth-century introduction of the term jianzhu, the translation of “architecture.” The earliest preserved illustrated government-issued building standard was titled Yingzao fashi. Published by the Southern Song government in 1103, Yingzao fashi defined and regulated technical terms used to describe imperial construction as well as specified the labor costs of certain building techniques. These terms inform our understanding of the traditional Chinese way of categorization and knowledge system of architecture and architectural elements.

This episode analyzes this yuefu piece from different perspectives. As many of the popular songs of the Han, this poem contains dialogue and monologue at the same time. The poem follows a daring woman’s emotional changes from her initial rage against her lover from the south who jilted her to an unsettling feeling of anxiety.

Cultivating Compassion In Catholic Teachings: An Invitation To Relationship With Immigrants And Refugees With Hiv/Aids, Anna Salvestrin

Undergraduate Honors Theses

In 1989 the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops released Called to Compassion and Responsibility. This document, which articulates the official Catholic Church teaching on HIV/AIDS, emphasizes personal responsibility in limiting the spread of HIV and calls for compassion toward the sick. The bishops direct their document to Catholic clergy and parishioners and offer recommendations for government policy and parish actions that affirm human dignity. This thesis argues that the document's recommendations do not adequately consider the experiences of immigrants and refugees with HIV/AIDS and neglect sufficient attention to their lived experiences. In future documents, the bishops should use the …
