Special Issue Introduction By Fhq Editors, Connie L. Lester Jun 2022

Special Issue Introduction By Fhq Editors, Connie L. Lester

Florida Historical Quarterly

In the planning of the 500 Years of Florida History series, we decided that the complexity of the nineteenth century was too challenging for a single issue. As a result, we divided the century at the end of Reconstruction and expanded it to 1920 and the extension of suffrage to American women with the ratification of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. The seven articles that focused on the earlier decades of nineteenth century appeared in the winter issue of Volume 94 and were edited by James Cusick. Those articles covered a range of topics from literature to Native …

Pentasyllabic Shi Poetry : Landscape Poetry : Landscapes Of The Mind, Lucas Rambo Bender Jun 2022

Pentasyllabic Shi Poetry : Landscape Poetry : Landscapes Of The Mind, Lucas Rambo Bender

How to Read Chinese Poetry Podcast

This episode discusses the prehistory of Chinese landscape poetry. In the centuries before poets began to write consistently of their concrete, personal experiences out in nature, landscape appeared in poetry primarily as a foil for the city and the court, where most poets were writing. In this role, the natural landscape could be terrifyingly inhospitable or wondrous and pure. Either way, it was for the most part imagined rather than experienced, a site more often for mental roaming than for extended in-person exploration.

Commemorating The Past: Nebraska Museum Practices In Interpreting, Memorializing, And Mythologizing History, Carissa Dowden

Department of Geography: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Commemorative landscapes are spaces that have a symbolic meaning to a group of people and are often identified by a government or by a local community. These landscapes act as “symbolic conduits” to both express and legitimize interpretations of the past, though geographic interpretations are largely limited to the American South and Europe (Alderman and Dywer 2012). This research seeks to better understand landscapes of commemoration and memorialization in Nebraska, specifically how memories of the West and pioneers are constructed and represented within heritage and history institutions. Applying methods in geography, public history and digital humanities, this research considers both …

Identity Formation Of Migrant Characters In Catalin Dorian Florescu’S Novels Jacob Beschließt Zu Lieben And Der Mann, Der Das Glück Bringt, Aratee Kaewsumrit

Journal of Letters

This research article outlines the process of identity formation of migrant characters in the novels Jacob beschließt zu lieben (2011) and Der Mann, der das Glück bringt (2016) by Catalin Dorian Florescu, a famous contemporary Swiss author who was born in Romania. The study shows that the characters in both novels form their identities in similar ways. Such identity formation which crosses cultural boundaries, and the settings in places of cultural hybridity like Banat …

Thai Government And The Problem About Korean Prisoners Of War After The End Of The Second World War, Thep Boontanondha Jun 2022

Thai Government And The Problem About Korean Prisoners Of War After The End Of The Second World War, Thep Boontanondha

Journal of Letters

The status of Korean Prisoners of War (POWs) after the Second World War differed from that of Japanese soldiers, and also Allied soldiers who had been POWs of the Japanese Army. Japanese soldiers and civilians were recognized by the Thai government and the Allies as defeated combatants and were treated as prisoners. Allied Dutch, Australian and British soldiers and civilians, who were captured and used by the Japanese Armed Forces as coolies, were viewed as victors. Hence, these former POWs were treated kindly, with the Government providing as many necessities of life as possible and following their demands. The status …

Psychometric Characteristics Of Academic Language Discourse Analysis Tools, Courtney (Cici) Brianna Claar Jun 2022

Psychometric Characteristics Of Academic Language Discourse Analysis Tools, Courtney (Cici) Brianna Claar

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Academic language plays a key role in students’ educational success, yet its development in primary grades is poorly understood and often neglected (Snow & Uccelli, 2008). Academic language skills may enhance overall academic performance if targeted early and intensively. However, current methods of assessment are not sufficient to understanding the construct well enough to develop evidence-based intervention strategies. This investigation examined the psychometric properties of two discourse analysis tools designed to directly measure students’ comprehension and production of academic language. Academic language samples (n = 7,887) from a previous cohort-design study (n = 1,040; Kindergarten through third grade participants) were …

Narrative Fiction And Collective Representation Biases (Socio-Cultural Study), Loui Khalil

Journal of the Arab American University مجلة الجامعة العربية الامريكية للبحوث

The subject of the study is related to the textual city, which represents a partial narrative shadow of the real city. The study is based on the hypothesis, "All forms of groups within the Syrian city during the Baath Party rule lack cohesion and order"! Thus, the aim of the study was to seek, prove or deny this hypothesis. To achieve this purpose, the study used the tools of the sociological approach and cultural criticism to reveal the biases inherent in the texts. As a result, the hypothesis has been accepted and the need to differentiate between two types of …

There Was Confusion, Carter Cumbo Jun 2022

There Was Confusion, Carter Cumbo

Stonecoast MFA Theses and Capstones

This collection is about a young man with an overactive mind trying to make sense of life in early recovery from alcoholism. It focuses on the reckoning of his past, how it appears to go with him into the present, and the relationships that exist on the periphery of his adamant self- examination. It is about the realization that his obsessive process of self-examination, and desperation for answers to life’s universal questions, pale in comparison to the wisdom of his own lived experience. It is a journey through current and past life and the reckoning of a confused mind.

Stumptown On Strike With Garrett Palmer, Garrett Palmer Jun 2022

Stumptown On Strike With Garrett Palmer, Garrett Palmer

PDXPLORES Podcast

In this episode of PDXPLORES, Garrett Palmer (History, '22) discusses the 1934 Portland Waterfront Strike. The strike has largely been portrayed as "static", where striking workers clashed with the establishment at the hiring halls and the docks of Portland. While that is correct, it is a bit simplistic; we can glean more from the event by considering how urban space, the relationship between metropole and hinterlands, and the role of unconventional groups played roles in the strike. That line of inquiry ultimately showcases that this event was anything but static, as groups like church parishes, the Communist Party, sex workers, …

War, Love, And Journeys: A Comparative Analysis Of Conceptual Metaphors In Political Speeches, Kelly N. Woods

Theses and Dissertations

In convention speeches and inaugural addresses, presidential candidates and newly-elected presidents attempt to persuade listeners to vote for and support them. One persuasive tool that they use in these speeches is metaphor, considered a fundamental form of reasoning (Lakoff & Johnson, 1980). The present study focuses on three conceptual metaphors (POLITICS IS WAR, POLITICS IS A JOURNEY, and POLITICS IS LOVE) used in 40 speeches given by American presidents from 1944 to 2021 in order to see if there are differences in metaphor usage across political party (i.e., Democrat and Republican) and across speech type (i.e., nomination acceptance and inaugural …
