Floodwall Magazine

The Gladys Boen Scholarship is awarded “for the best short story, poem or collection of poems, or essay submitted by an undergraduate currently enrolled in the university.” The Creative Writing Scholarship Committee had this to say on Maren Schettler’s “The History of Hurry”: “With its fragmented form and its melding of criticism with the personal essay, Maren Schettler’s essay enacts the very principle defended in her essay’s argument: that we must slow down, resist the urge to hurry, and break free from the rule of clocks and calendars.”

The Gladys Boen Scholarship is awarded “for the best short story, poem or collection of poems, or essay submitted by an undergraduate currently enrolled in the university.” The Creative Writing Scholarship Committee had this to say on Caitlin Scheresky’s “Between,” the runner-up for this year’s Gladys Boen Scholarship: “In this poem, Caitlin Scheresky addresses the inexorable march of time and the impossibility of escaping its inevitable progress. Yet, in that space, Caitlin’s poem generates hope, closeness, and tenderness.

The Napoleonic Code: Property, Succession, And Gender, Deanna Small

Scholarly Horizons: University of Minnesota, Morris Undergraduate Journal

Through an investigation of excerpt of the 1804 Napoleonic Code, this paper explores the way the law impacted inheritance, property laws, and women's place in the law in Napoleonic France. These laws shaped the legal system for years to come and aimed to create an image of France that fit with Napoleon’s vision. This paper alongside an annotated copy of excerpts of the Code presents a focused investigation of the language of the law and the various ways laws were actually practiced or circumscribed by French citizens.

The Paratexts Of Audience Engagement: Cover Matter That Draws In And Keeps Readers, Athena L. Edwards Jul 2022

The Paratexts Of Audience Engagement: Cover Matter That Draws In And Keeps Readers, Athena L. Edwards

All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations

Within the book publishing industry, purchase statistics often determine a book’s success. This metric neglects crucial factors of reader engagement (i.e., reception and anticipation of current and future work) such as level of interest and appreciation. By blending key concepts from work on assemblage, ecology, reader-response, audience invoked, and media studies, this thesis attempts to (re)invigorate the discourse of book paratexts’ role in inspiring reader engagement. As a manifestation of various voices performing and contextualizing a core text for readers, paratexts are a key component to the discursive uptake of books by readers and their publics. Book covers, specifically, are …

This portfolio contains two projects. The first is an analysis of The Truman Show, which is an American comedy film from 1998. Gender Equity And State-Mosque Relations In Middle East North Africa: A Case Study Of Tunisia, Joy Amarachi Agbugba Jul 2022

Gender Equity And State-Mosque Relations In Middle East North Africa: A Case Study Of Tunisia, Joy Amarachi Agbugba

Dissertations and Theses

Why is the Middle East North Africa region consistently ranked the lowest on the gender equity scale? This question is quite perplexing and that has driven several scholarly researchers to investigate the situation of gender and women's rights within the states in the region. In this research, I explore the various theories explaining the cause of gender inequity in this region including the Islam thesis/social modernization theory, political-economic theory, and psychological/social structural theories, with an emphasis on the Islamic thesis theory. I argue that the state's support and prioritization of Muslim/sharia law over federal law is a major contributor to …
