Music: Seeking Pleasure, Emotional Language, Ritualized Communication, Jillian N. Gerlach Jul 2022

Music: Seeking Pleasure, Emotional Language, Ritualized Communication, Jillian N. Gerlach

Interdivisional Studies Summer Fellows

The impetus for my project was how I view listening to music as a spiritual or religious experience. Listening to music, instead of practicing religion, satisfies my inclination toward spirituality. In the introduction to my paper, I outlined how music exists in my life. I thought it was valuable to provide my unique experience to give context to my research. I created a diagram that delineates how I interact with music and the benefits I derive from listening to music. During this self-reflection, I realized listening to music functions like a ritual for me. I noticed my individual ritualized listening …

Successful Post-Covid Theatre Recruitment And Retention Practices, Biliana Stoytcheva-Horissian, Kevork Horissian, Aaron Scully, Shawna Mefferd Kelty Jul 2022

Successful Post-Covid Theatre Recruitment And Retention Practices, Biliana Stoytcheva-Horissian, Kevork Horissian, Aaron Scully, Shawna Mefferd Kelty

Faculty Conference Papers and Presentations

In the past several years and especially after the COVID-19 outbreak, recruiting and retaining students has become more challenging than ever before. Even before the pandemic, there has been an increased pressure for colleges and universities to be able to demonstrate tangible educational benefits. This has been especially valid for liberal arts institutions and theatre programs since they are considered to be “less practical and useful.” Often students and their parents focus more on securing jobs rather than exploring interests and passions and seem unable to see the connection between theatre education and other careers.

The panel of presenters brings …

Intellectual Freedom, Cultural Exchange, And Nazi Germany: The Relationship Between The Deutsch-Ausländischer Buchtausch, University Of Denver, And Other Cultural Heritage Institutions, David Fasman Jul 2022

Intellectual Freedom, Cultural Exchange, And Nazi Germany: The Relationship Between The Deutsch-Ausländischer Buchtausch, University Of Denver, And Other Cultural Heritage Institutions, David Fasman

University Libraries: Staff Scholarship

Shortly after Hitler’s rise to power, the Prussian State Library was restructured, birthing a new entity – the Deutsch-Ausländischer Buchtausch (German Foreign Book Exchange, DAB). The DAB was responsible for exchanging books and serials with scholarly institutions worldwide. In 1936, the University of Denver (DU) received a gift of books from the DAB. Nearly fifty percent of the books would be categorized as Nazi propaganda or eugenics literature by current standards. Upon further research, it was discovered that the DAB’s relationships included Stanford, Yale, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, the …

The Great Generalization: Organizational Adaptation Strategies As Entrepreneurship In Higher Music Education, Jacob Bruce Hertzog Jul 2022

The Great Generalization: Organizational Adaptation Strategies As Entrepreneurship In Higher Music Education, Jacob Bruce Hertzog

Music Faculty Publications and Presentations

This study sought to measure how higher music education has evolved in response to the music industry’s digital revolution. I utilized a framework of organizational adaptation theory to synthesize five distinct organizational adaptation strategies: decentralization, generalization, specialization, formalization, and inaction. Music leaders were surveyed (n = 100) to assess adaptations across ten common domains in higher education. Higher music education was found to have undergone a great generalization through the expansion of activities in nearly every domain. Consistent with elements of organizational adaptation theory, and like individual musicians, higher music education has been entrepreneurial in response to the digital revolution.

Sino-Russian Relations And The War In Ukraine, Zenel Garcia, Kevin D. Modlin Jul 2022

Sino-Russian Relations And The War In Ukraine, Zenel Garcia, Kevin D. Modlin

The US Army War College Quarterly: Parameters

Claims that China has taken “Russia’s side” in the Ukrainian War oversimplify Sino-Russian relations. We contend Sino-Russian relations are a narrow partnership centered on accelerating the emergence of a multipolar order to reduce American hegemony and illustrate this point by tracing the discursive and empirical foundations of the relationship using primary and secondary materials. Furthermore, we highlight how the war has created challenges and opportunities for China’s other strategic interests, some at the expense of the United States or Russia.

Srad Director's Corner: Understanding North Korea And The Key To Security In East Asia, George Shatzer Jul 2022

Srad Director's Corner: Understanding North Korea And The Key To Security In East Asia, George Shatzer

The US Army War College Quarterly: Parameters

In the third installment of the SRAD Director’s Corner, Colonel George Shatzer focuses on North Korea and the Kim family regime. He reviews Becoming Kim Jong Un: A Former CIA Officer’s Insights into North Korea’s Enigmatic Young Dictator by Jung H. Pak and Rationality in the North Korean Regime: Understanding the Kims’ Strategy of Provocation by David W. Shin and shows how these books might help readers better understand North Korea’s leader Kim Jong-Un and the implications of his actions for US foreign and military policy in the region. The books also provide insights for strategists attempting to plan for …

The Intersections Of Migration And Identity In Young Adult Literature Of The French-Speaking World, Kaitlyn Waller Jul 2022

The Intersections Of Migration And Identity In Young Adult Literature Of The French-Speaking World, Kaitlyn Waller

Department of Modern Languages and Literatures: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Both young adult literature and novels of migration frequently deal with the construction of identity, from coming-of-age stories to narratives of intercultural exploration and hybridization. Young adult narratives of migration, then, represent a fascinating intersection of two literary traditions for the exploration of questions of identity. However, young adult literature and its varied subgenres are often overlooked among the broader critical scholarship of migration narratives. Indeed, the genre is often critiqued as too simplistic or pedagogical to truly merit consideration among adult readers and academics. Through an in-depth analysis of nine novels, however, I explore questions of identity development in …

Empowerment Of Tidung Island Coastal Communities Through Language Toward Tourism Resilience, Hendra Kaprisma Jul 2022

Empowerment Of Tidung Island Coastal Communities Through Language Toward Tourism Resilience, Hendra Kaprisma

Makara Human Behavior Studies in Asia

Over 60% of Indonesian people live in coastal areas, which is a figure that escalates yearly. Thus, the government must prioritize the development of the marine sector on the Indonesian coast. As modernization and globalization progress, the wealth of the coastal culture should be preserved and cultivated as an identity or national pride symbol. The lack of educational factors such as foreign language skills prevents coastal communities from maximizing their territory’s potential. This study was conducted by employing the curriculum-based measurement approach on the coastal communities of Tidung Island. This approach was used to support foreign language learning activities on …
