Ethical Extensionism Defended, Joel P. Macclellan
Ethical Extensionism Defended, Joel P. Macclellan
Between the Species
Ethical extensionism is a common argument pattern in environmental and animal ethics, which takes a morally valuable trait already recognized in us and argues that we should recognize that value in other entities such as nonhuman animals. I exposit ethical extensionism’s core argument, argue for its validity and soundness, and trace its history to 18th century progressivist calls to expand the moral community and legal franchise. However, ethical extensionism has its critics. The bulk of the paper responds to recent criticisms, including (1) environmental ethicists’ objection against its austere conception of moral value (2), feminist ethicists’ claim that extensionism fails …

A Study Of Composite Concert Assessment Ratings Of Asboa Affiliated Ensembles From 2003 To 2019, Alyssa Perry
A Study Of Composite Concert Assessment Ratings Of Asboa Affiliated Ensembles From 2003 To 2019, Alyssa Perry
Student Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine composite ratings at Arkansas School Band and Orchestra Association (ASBOA) sanctioned concert assessments from 2003 to 2019. ASBOA divides the state into nine geographic regions to group schools for ASBOA events. All schools in a single region who choose to participate in ASBOA activities perform at concert assessment together and compete against each other at all-region auditions. In 2011, a region realignment occurred to make the number of students participating in each region in various ASBOA activities, specifically all-region and all-state bands, more equal. As a result, ASBOA adjusted the geographic regions, …
Queer Bodies: Homoeroticism, Sensuality, And Erotica In Postmodern Fine Art Photography, Rosa Michel Pace
Queer Bodies: Homoeroticism, Sensuality, And Erotica In Postmodern Fine Art Photography, Rosa Michel Pace
LSU Master's Theses
The queer body– describes the sum of assumptions and biases attributed to queer people, whereby a person’s own queer identity or expression is overshadowed by the generalizations, (mis)perceptions, and stereotypes that society imposes on that individual. Central to the scope of this thesis is the reality whereby the ostracization of queer people involves the association between the very body of the queer person with sexual acts deemed both deviant and immoral by a cis-heteronormative society. Society renders the queer body as pejoratively deviant simply on the basis of its existence alone, where any form of varied gender or sexual expression …

Not Damsels In Distress: Women And The Video Game Industry, Abby Jayne Pucik
Not Damsels In Distress: Women And The Video Game Industry, Abby Jayne Pucik
Student Theses and Dissertations
Men often designed video games as a masculine technology, but there is nothing innately masculine about video games. Games have been socially constructed in design rooms, advertisements, and by the users. The work of the earliest women game designers pushed the boundaries of game making as a form of human technological expression, proving that video games were socially constructed. Despite those efforts, marketers failed to portray women in gaming. Early gaming advertisements used women as background decoration in arcade flyers that catered to men consumers. This objectification of women stimulated a culture in which men perceived themselves to be the …
Review Of Chiara Mazzucchelli, The Heart And The Island: A Critical Study Of Sicilian American Literature, Eveljn Ferraro
Review Of Chiara Mazzucchelli, The Heart And The Island: A Critical Study Of Sicilian American Literature, Eveljn Ferraro
Modern Languages & Literature
Sicily’s island status and centuries of conquests and foreign rule have molded the identity of Sicilian people and culture in unique ways. Reflecting this diver-sity, Sicilian literature has long occupied a distinct place within Italian litera-ture. Likewise, in The Heart and the Island, scholar Chiara Mazzucchelli argues that Sicilian American writers have produced a substantial body of literature that, although traditionally subsumed under the broader domain of Italian American literature, manifests “a distinct Sicilian Americanness” that she terms “sicilianamericanita.” Following on the footsteps of scholars like Edvige Giunta and Donna Gabaccia, Mazzucchelli presents an ambitious “intraethnic decen-tering project” that by …
Exploring The Semantics And Functionality Of Ghanaianisms, James Nsoh Adogpa
Exploring The Semantics And Functionality Of Ghanaianisms, James Nsoh Adogpa
Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)
Ghanaian users of English have developed a variety of English that includes, among other things, lexical items whose usage and meanings are impregnated with cultural values, concepts and meanings. In this thesis I call these items Ghanaianisms and argue that their significance is to allow an institutionalized second language to acquire new meanings in the new context, in order to function effectively and to express new identities. The new norms that have arisen in the Ghanaian context include both feature norms and behavioural norms, and both were investigated as part of the study. The methodology used is ethnographic in nature. …
The Papers Of Clarence Mitchell Jr., Volume Vi : The Struggle To Pass The 1960 Civil Rights Act, 1959–1960, Clarence Mitchell Jr., Denton L. Watson
The Papers Of Clarence Mitchell Jr., Volume Vi : The Struggle To Pass The 1960 Civil Rights Act, 1959–1960, Clarence Mitchell Jr., Denton L. Watson
Ohio University Press Open Access Books
The Civil Rights Act of 1960 aimed to close loopholes in its 1957 predecessor that had allowed continued voter disenfranchisement for African Americans and for Mexicans in Texas.
In early 1959, the newly seated Eighty-Sixth Congress had four major civil rights bills under consideration. Eventually consolidated into the 1960 Civil Rights Act, their purpose was to correct the weaknesses in the 1957 law. Mitchell’s papers from 1959 to 1960 show the extent to which congressional resistance to the passage of meaningful civil rights laws contributed to the lunch counter sit-ins in Greensboro, North Carolina, and to subsequent demonstrations. The papers …
