The Turkish Angel In The House: A Travelling Concept In The Housewife Poems Of Ziya Gökalp And Halide Nusret Zorlutuna, Fatma Fulya Tepe, Per Bauhn
The Turkish Angel In The House: A Travelling Concept In The Housewife Poems Of Ziya Gökalp And Halide Nusret Zorlutuna, Fatma Fulya Tepe, Per Bauhn
Journal of International Women's Studies
In the present study, a close reading of the “Housewife” poems of Ziya Gökalp and Halide Nusret Zorlutuna reveals not only a travelling concept – that of the angel in the house, originally introduced by the British Victorian poet Coventry Patmore – but also illustrates how this concept mirrors the contradictions inherent in the early republican conception of Turkish women. On the one hand, women were recognized as holders of rights; on the other hand, they were idealised as submissive domestic helpers of their husbands. The concept of the angel in the house, as employed by Gökalp and Zorlutuna, …

Who They Are, Where They Come From And Where They Are Going: Professional Background And Political Ambition Of Ecuadorian Women Legislators, 1979-2017, Santiago Basabe-Serrano, Natasha Álava Arteaga
Journal of International Women's Studies
This article examines the differences in socio-demographics, professional backgrounds, and political careers between women and men who were part of the Ecuadorian Congress, 1979-2017. We propose a descriptive statistical study in which, through a bivariate analysis, we compare women and men in terms of age, marital status, professional qualifications, and political ambition before and after their participation in Congress. Based on an unpublished database, the main empirical findings indicate that the differences between them are not statistically significant. Nevertheless, since the implementation of the Parity Law in 2009, women legislators are increasingly younger and single, with more academic training and …

Freedom And Control: Musicians’ Autonomy And Record Labels’ Influence In Producing The Sound Of Contemporary Jazz, Jiwon Kwon
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
It is easy to find news articles and jazz albums titles that describe jazz musicians as geniuses. The notion that jazz musicians are geniuses gives the misleading impression that a jazz record is the pure outcome of a musician’s artistry, without any aesthetic intervention by record labels in the process of making albums. However, my interviews with jazz musicians and record label executives reveal that many jazz records released by labels are the result of collaborative effort between musicians and labels. Labels involve themselves in the album-making process and give artistic input by deciding the concept of an album, the …
Haydn’S Schemata And Hexachords: Two Analytical Case Studies, Gilad Rabinovitch
Haydn’S Schemata And Hexachords: Two Analytical Case Studies, Gilad Rabinovitch
HAYDN: Online Journal of the Haydn Society of North America
Two analytical case studies, from Haydn’s minuet al roverso (from the Symphony Hob. I: 47) and the opening movement of the String Quartet Op. 50, no. 6, show the interaction of galant schemata (Gjerdingen 2007) and the hexachordal solmization of the solfeggio tradition (Baragwanath 2020). Haydn plays upon conventional galant schemata—presumably elements of style shared by listeners who are closely familiar with the idiom (even if they do not have explicit schema labels); he also plays upon a more esoteric element of his own training and that of many other musicians in the period: hexachordal solmization. By considering both schemata …
The Spartacus Rebellion, More Than A Slave Revolt, Gavin J. Maziarz
The Spartacus Rebellion, More Than A Slave Revolt, Gavin J. Maziarz
The Gettysburg Historical Journal
The Spartacus Revolt is commonly known for its titular leader, whose deeds have been romanticized in movies and other media. While Hollywood has led many to believe Spartacus was a revolutionary leader working to end slavery in the Roman Empire, this is not an accurate characterization. However, that does not mean that the Spartacus Revolt was nothing more than a historical footnote, although not for its leader. In fact, the revolt should be seen as a revolt of a middle class of veterans in the Roman Empire who wanted greater social standing than the end of the Social War had …

Lenses, Focus, And Fluidity: Lessons From Medieval Queer History, Reese Hollister
The Gettysburg Historical Journal
The Medieval era is sometimes overlooked within the field of Queer and Transgender History, but a recent shift in focus has revealed new discoveries and interpretations. This historiographical analysis posits that in the Middle Ages, gender and sexuality were much more fluid than previously believed.
Monuments Of Legitimacy: 17th Century Tokugawa-Sponsored Architecture As Political Objects, Ziv R. Y. Carmi
Monuments Of Legitimacy: 17th Century Tokugawa-Sponsored Architecture As Political Objects, Ziv R. Y. Carmi
The Gettysburg Historical Journal
This work aims to synthesize art history, historical memory, and Tokugawa-era Japanese politics with an art history approach and cultural analysis. It takes a more complete look at the politics of Tokugawa Ieyasu’s death and the significance of memorial and religious architecture as political works. It examines the utilization of architecture as a way to elevate and legitimize the Tokugawa, demonstrating that policy was not the only way for the Tokugawa to solidify their legacy and suggesting that key figures like Ieyasu were more important to the religious and political structures of Tokugawa Japan in death than they were in …

How to Read Chinese Poetry Podcast
The Chinese equivalent term of quatrain, i.e., jueju, literally means “cut-off lines.” It was believed by many critics that this meant the wujue and qijue forms had originated as quatrain segments cut from the eight-line lüshi forms. This episode begins with close readings of representative poems to provide readers a sense of the thematic scope and aesthetic potential of jueju. A detailed examination of common jueju features then follows.

Stimmel Family Collection, 1857-1865, Special Collections, Leonard H. Axe Library
Finding Aids
This collection consists of correspondence of Joseph Stimmel and Samuel E. Weimer during the American Civil War. The letters describe military matters, occupations and daily soldierly duties. Prior to their deposit at Pittsburg State University, the letters were laminated. There is also a journal of John Moorhead, a Methodist minister who was likely related to Stimmel and Weimer.
Joseph Stimmel (1842-1917) lived in Juniata County, Pennsylvania. He and his cousin, Samuel Weimer (1844-1900), served in the same regiment (126th Pennsylvania Infantry). Both mustered in on August 3rd, 1862 and mustered out on May 20th, 1863. They fought in …

Yankees In The Indian Ocean : American Commerce And Whaling, 1786–1860, Jane Hooper
Yankees In The Indian Ocean : American Commerce And Whaling, 1786–1860, Jane Hooper
Ohio University Press Open Access Books
The history of US imperialism remains incomplete without this consideration of long-overlooked nineteenth-century American commercial and whaling ventures in the Indian Ocean.
Yankees in the Indian Ocean shows how nineteenth-century American merchant and whaler activity in the Indian Ocean shaped the imperial future of the United States, influenced the region’s commerce, encouraged illegal slaving, and contributed to environmental degradation. For a brief time, Americans outnumbered other Western visitors to Mauritius, Madagascar, Zanzibar, and the East African littoral. In a relentless search for commodities and provisions, American whaleships landed at islands throughout the ocean and stripped them of resources. Yet Americans …

Deaccession Decision-Making During The Covid-19 Pandemic: A Multi-Site Case Study Of Art Museums In The United States, Shannon Hahn
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
At the beginning of the pandemic, museums were forced to close, resulting in significant losses in earned revenue. To address budgetary shortfalls across the museum field, the Association of Art Museum Directors (AAMD) temporarily relaxed their deaccessioning guidelines to allow museums to sell works of art from their collections and use proceeds to support the direct care of collections. This project utilized a qualitative multi-site case study and textual analysis to examine deaccession decisions of four art museums in the United States that deaccessioned works of art during the pandemic. Textual data was collected from online newspaper articles, press releases, …

Plant And Animal Body-Part Terms In Shiwulu Grammar: Classification, Nominalization, And Incorporation, Pilar M. Valenzuela
World Languages and Cultures Faculty Books and Book Chapters
"The goal of the present study is to offer an account of the principal constructions containing body-part terms in Shiwilu. These involve inanimate classifiers, three lexical nominalizers (instrumental, habitual agent, and resultative), and incorporated nouns and classifiers. While articles have previously been written addressing the Shiwilu system of classifiers and nominal incorporation (Valenzuela 2016, 2019, to appear), this chapter focuses on the role that body-part terms play in the grammar of the language."

The Second-Person Point of View in Three Contemporary Latino Short Stories
By
Rocio L. Uchofen
Advisor: Professor Alyson Bardsley
The “you” discourse is dynamic, it generates an interaction, it implies a dialogue between narrator and reader. The investigations about the use of the second person in the narrative discourse generally go beyond English language frontiers, the discussion has not finished and narratological investigations have more texts to analyze as fiction in second-person narration is not an unusual occurrence in contemporary literature. The analysis of three short stories written by Latino writers Daniel Alarcon, Junot Diaz and Sandra Cisneros intends …

Stabilizing The Empire: Western Calendric Astronomy As Statecraft During The Kangxi Reign, 1667-1720, Xiaoqiao Xu
The Quiet Corner Interdisciplinary Journal
In the late Ming dynasty (1368-1644), Catholic missionaries arrived in China to preach Christianity. Suspected by the ruling emperors, figures like Matteo Ricci (1552-1519) approached royal authorities by introducing scientific knowledge to them. This trend continued to the Qing dynasty (1644-1911), and was deployed extensively by the Emperor Kangxi (reign 1667-1722), especially in the field of calendric knowledge. Previous research contended that Kangxi’s adoption of western calendric knowledge was mainly out of Kangxi’s own interest or his concern of empire-building. This paper argues that Kangxi utilized the western calendric astronomy as statecraft to stabilize the Qing empire through perspectives of …

The Battle Of Tours Reconsidered, Paul Aitchison
The Battle Of Tours Reconsidered, Paul Aitchison
Montview Journal of Research & Scholarship
This paper examines the Battle of Tours/Poitiers in 732 between the Merovingian Mayor of the Palace, Charles Martel, and the Umayyad governor-general of al-Andalus in modern-day Spain, Abdul Rahman Al-Ghafiqi. Since the pivotal works of Sir Edward Gibbons were published in 1776, the battle has been seen as keeping Europe from falling completely to Islam. More recent scholarship highlights the battle as pivotal in Charles's quest to consolidate power in his ultimately successful bid to create a new power in western Europe, the Carolingian dynasty, which would eventually be created in the crowning as the Holy Roman Empire his grandson, …

From The Restoration To The Glorious Revolution: A Protestant Regrouping, Kevan D. Keane
Montview Journal of Research & Scholarship
Abstract
Puritans had goals of reforming the Church of England but had difficulty maintaining a consistent vision of that. As Puritans tried to secure their place in the New World, England was going through one of its most significant transitions of power. These events are known as the Restoration, and the political turmoil in its wake resulted in the Glorious Revolution, a time of intense political transition resulting in the overthrow of James II, the last of the Stuart monarchs. However, its effects were not only felt in England. The Restoration as well as the Glorious Revolution carried over into …
Constructing A Religious Paradox: The Nauvoo Temple, 1841-1846, Justin R. Bates
Constructing A Religious Paradox: The Nauvoo Temple, 1841-1846, Justin R. Bates
Montview Journal of Research & Scholarship
While still in poverty and fleeing heavy persecution in 1841, members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints committed themselves to an unexpected architectural endeavor. They decided to construct a temple to their God in their newly christened frontier city of Nauvoo, Illinois. What motivated these poor, homeless, persecuted Christians to start construction on such an ambitious project? Though they were being driven from the state, were about to lose the Temple, and had just lost their alleged prophet, they still chose to finish it. Despite significant financial and social challenges, the Latter-day Saints chose to build the …
Call For Culturally Inclusive Texts In The English Classroom: Books As Mirrors And Windows, Annie Yon
Call For Culturally Inclusive Texts In The English Classroom: Books As Mirrors And Windows, Annie Yon
New Jersey English Journal
The literary canon has long been revered in public education as representing the “‘depth and breadth of our national common experience,’ but the problem is that what was once defined as ‘common’—middle class, white, cisgender people—is no longer the reality in our country” (Anderson 1). The United States has a very diverse population, but there is a lack of diverse representation in books taught in the English classroom. In other words, American classics embedded in the curriculum hold merit, but they do not fully represent the stories of all ethnic and culturally diverse students with their own “American” experiences. Poor …

Covid-19 Isolation: Daily Lessons, Joseph S. Pizzo
New Jersey English Journal
COVID-19 continually disrupts classroom structure, design, and the lessons being taught. A return to in-person, on-site classrooms is being challenged again by new variants and people’s desire to gather during holidays. Our goal as caring educators is to “educate rather than separate” as we “continue / To humanize / Our study / Of humanities.”
