Apart from its religious values, the hijab has currently developed into a lifestyle. The issue concerning the hijab in Indonesia has evolved over time with a fascinating complexity that is worth to be examined. The Indonesian people who have the habit of questioning the decision to wear or not to wear the hijab illustrates that the choice of Indonesian women is not considered as a personal matter. This research will discuss how the phenomenon of “questioning the decision to wear or not wear the hijab” is based on the epistemology of ignorance, which investigates and explains how ignorance is formed …

Negotiation Discourse of Femininity Through Disney Princesses’ Movies. Femininity tends to be explained as a condition ‘to be a woman’, making it an ideology that gives limitations to women. Mills uses discourse theory to explain femininity, stating femininity is a process that is constructed and negotiated in every interaction. Disney Princesses show changes through times and each animation film, showing a negotiation of what defines femininity. The data collection was carried out by qualitative method narrative study, with Performativity of Gender by Judith Butler and Negotiation Discourse of Femininity theory by Sara Mills. Thirteen Disney Princesses were used as researched …

Sawer: Melampaui Ruang Dan Meluaskan Jangkauan Interaksi Pada Pertunjukan Dangdut, Michael H.B Raditya
Paradigma: Jurnal Kajian Budaya
This article deals with the issues of sawer that have appeared over time, both in live and online performances. This topic is interesting because sawer is intertwined in the interaction and participation of two active subjects, namely the singer and her audience. In live performances, the exchange between singers and their audiences happens in the same space and time. On the other hand, accommodating sawer in online dangdut performances is a challenge. However, in 2020 there was a lot of interaction and participation—and even sawer—in online shows. I believe this is not the first glimpse of this phenomenon because online …

This research is a development of Low’s theory (2008) on assessing the quality of song lyric translation based on its translation method. The objective of the study is to discover the quality of rhyme and rhythm of song lyrics in the album We Love Disney which have been translated from English to Indonesian. Therefore, this study focuses on the quality of rhyme and rhythm of the translation because these elements are significant parts of the songs. Low’s theory has been applied in the present study to measure the song lyric translation quality using three translation methods: communicative, free, and semantic …

Benetton’S (In)Equality: A Semiotic Reading, Hianly Muljadi, Sonny Angjaya, Joanna Deborah
Paradigma: Jurnal Kajian Budaya
United Colors of Benetton, or UCB, has been using its advertisements to deliver positive messages and values that the clothing company represents. This article analyzes one of the photographs in Benetton’s campaign for their Spring Summer Collection of 2018. The campaign, which consists of some photographs by Oliviero Toscani, raises the theme of equality of gender and ethnicity. It shows various photographs of both female and male models from different ethnicities. However, it is found that there is one photograph that shows inconsistency with the very value that Benetton wants to convey through their campaign. Based on the semiotic analysis, …

Journal of International Women's Studies
Home is an integral element of the Pakistani family system, and the idea of home is deeply embedded in Pakistani women’s consciousness. The prime objective of this study is to explore the socio-cultural factors responsible for women’s homelessness. This study highlights various determinants that lead women to leave their homes. The issue of women fleeing from their homes is a matter of disregard in Pakistan’s culture, such an action is considered as an issue of family’s self-image, respect, and honour. In the present study, Marxist and feminist lenses have been used to indicate women’s secondary status that is responsible for …

A Review Of The Cultural Gender Norms Contributing To Gender Inequality In Ghana: An Ecological Systems Perspective, Portia Nartey, Ozge Sensoy Bahar, Proscovia Nabunya
Journal of International Women's Studies
While significant progress has been made in improving the wellbeing of women and girls around the world, a gender gap still exists between men and women which is very evident in Ghana. Gender inequalities continue to persist in Ghana because of cultural gender norms that exalt and favor men and put women in subordinate and subservient roles. These cultural gender norms hinder women’s development and widen gender inequality between men and women in different system levels of society. Therefore, there is a need to examine the influence of these cultural gender norms on women’s lives using a systems framework to …

Forced Alienation And The Challenges Of Survival In The Poetry Of “Mahmoud Darwish”, Bashir Faraj
BAU Journal - Society, Culture and Human Behavior
“If only time would return one day”. A beautiful expression that we hear very often in all Arab countries, it carries a lot of meanings, some of which are beautiful, and some are stressful and tiring for the soul; because of the painful memories it contains.
Alienation is a conscious person’s awareness of his need for a homeland, even when he is in the country in which he was born and grew up loving it, because this homeland has changed so much that it is no longer possible to be comfortable about it. Usually, this alienation occurs when the homeland …

BAU Journal - Society, Culture and Human Behavior
Syrian refugees in Lebanon are a major challenge at the social, economic and psychological levels, in addition to the issue of the Palestinian refugees in Lebanon in the wake of the Naksaa of 1948. The main hypothesis of this study is that the difficult circumstances experienced by the displaced may affect their personality traits. The sample consisted of 430 individuals, (n=204) Syrian refugees and (n=226) Palestinian refugees of both sexes. All the members of the sample responded to the Arabic Inventory of the Five Big Personality Factors. The inventory enjoys good to high alpha coefficients in both samples, and was …
Platonic Love Poetry: Feminist Literature In The Umayyad Era, Samir Itani
Platonic Love Poetry: Feminist Literature In The Umayyad Era, Samir Itani
BAU Journal - Society, Culture and Human Behavior
Readers of Platonic Love pieces, that were popular in the Umayyad era and spread in Arab society until almost a century after its demise, observe its uniqueness in terms of presenting the personalities of poets in a distinguished way as to men in that time in respect of cultural features. The stories also include extraordinary events that drive them away from the real framework, which critics used to believe, and puts them in an artistic framework that seeks to present a possible reality that is not achieved in actuality. Perhaps this is due to the reasons; one of the most …

Towards New Pedagogical Practices In Times Of Covid: Distance Education As A Mark Of Resilience In The Moroccan University, Abdelfettah Nacer Idrissi
BAU Journal - Society, Culture and Human Behavior
Affected, like most countries in the world, by the covid-19 pandemic which has affected all sectors of activity, Morocco has proposed, as part of a policy of prevention and anticipation. The measures including the objective is not only to limit the spread of covid but also and above all to ensure educational continuity and the transition from face-to-face teaching to distance learning. However, not having, like the majority of countries, a prior strategy to deal with this disaster situation, the concept of the resilience of education systems was not yet included in public policies. This fact did not prevent the …

From Trauma To Resilience: The Cases Of Beirut Syndrome By Alexandre Najjar And Beirut 2020 Diary Of A Collapse By Charif Majdalani (Comparative Study), Ilham Slim-Hoteit, Lama Farhat
BAU Journal - Society, Culture and Human Behavior
This study is an attempt to think, interpret and analyze the concept of resilience and to study the factors and mechanisms that result from it under the influence of historical, psychic, social and cultural challenges. Boris Cyrulnik defines resilience as a "biological, psycho-affective, social and cultural process that allows a new development after psychic trauma". It is thus presented as an experience that can only be lived after going through various shocks, turbulences and disturbances, whether individual or collective. The two novels of Alexandre Najjar Le syndrome de Beyrouth and Charif Majdalani Beyrouth 2020 Journal d'un effondrement seem to offer …

Memories, A Process Of Resilience In The Face Of Captivity, Nadia Naboulsi Iskandarani
BAU Journal - Society, Culture and Human Behavior
Resilience is the ability to withstand adversity, trauma, stress, and other problems such as depression, family problems and difficult situations in order to be able to survive regardless of the types of shocks suffered. In his novel, Tous les hommes n’habitent pas le monde de la même façon (All men do not inhabit the world in the same way), the French writer Jean-Paul Dubois (Goncourt price-2019) narrates the story of Paul Hansen, locked down in Montreal prison where he shares a 6 square meters cell with Patrick Horton, convicted for murder. Paul Hansen passes time recalling the greatest moments of …
Post-War Culture And Reconciliation: From Optimism To Resilience, Michel Abou Khalil
Post-War Culture And Reconciliation: From Optimism To Resilience, Michel Abou Khalil
BAU Journal - Society, Culture and Human Behavior
Culture and Post-War Reconciliation: from Optimism to Resilience. At the end of the civil war, Lebanon tried to rebuild itself but fairly quickly wars, assassinations, repeated political crises and an influx of refugees weakened it. From 2019, it is downright descent into hell with an aborted popular revolt and a whole series of financial, economic and health disasters culminating in the explosion of August 4, 2020, which transformed it into a true martyr nation. Once again, the Land of the Cedars falls back into the cycle of the absurd, even into the circularity of the myth of Sisyphus, going so …
Three Strong Women, By Marie Ndiaye: The Grace Of Resilience, Carole Auroy
Three Strong Women, By Marie Ndiaye: The Grace Of Resilience, Carole Auroy
BAU Journal - Society, Culture and Human Behavior
By taking "three strong women" as heroines, Marie NDiaye brings out the paradoxical strength of characters caught up in the destructive mechanisms of stories with uncertain endings. We perceive in these women the models of a resilience whose restorative grace is inscribed the intersubjective relations of which they are the hearths. This hypothesis invites us to observe how these relationships, threatened by an alienating confusion, get out of it, but also to locate the opaque zones of the narratives which designate the fragility of the process. Resilience could be the faculty of escaping from the dead life, that which makes …

From Damage To Words : The Diary Of A Confined Person, Christelle Stephan-Hayek
BAU Journal - Society, Culture and Human Behavior
From March 16 to April 20, 2020, therefore from the 1st to the 35th day of confinement due to the COVID-19 pandemic, in France, Wajdi Mouawad writes his logbook every day, during this crossing of the desert, alone which more is “A word from a confined human to a confined human,” he says in his introduction.
Faced with one of the greatest social challenges that our current world has had to face in its almost entirety, each "confined human" has experienced a fight and has had no choice but to fight it. We will consider that of the Lebanese-born playwright, …
Popular Memory, Silence, And Trust: A Mother And Son’S Relationship To School In The Shadow Of The Prince Edward County Closures, Rory S. Dunn
Graduate Masters Theses
This thesis is an oral history related to Prince Edward County’s infamous school closures from 1959-1964. It tracks the popular memory of the closures through the narrative of two natives of Farmville, Virginia: a mother and son. This thesis investigates the role of physical monuments in the development of historical consciousness related to the school closures, as well as the intergenerational effects of the closures on the son. This thesis marks that there were radial effects from the school closures that manifested within the subsequent generation, and that for this particular case study, awareness of the closures and their effects …

Changing To Stay The Same: Spatial Analyses Of Tobacco Pipes From 18th- And 19th-Century Eastern Pequot Households, Stephen P. Anderson
Graduate Masters Theses
This thesis examines indigenous smoking practices using European white ball clay pipe disposal patterns on the Eastern Pequot reservation in North Stonington, Connecticut. The Eastern Pequot used European-made smoking pipes in their day-to-day life during the 18th and 19th centuries. Material and spatial analyses of pipes and their disposal patterns detail how Eastern Pequot smoking practices changed and continued in the North American colonial world.
Smoking and tobacco use are unique in North American colonialism as the practice originates with the continent’s Indigenous people and was transformed by the English. Questions around cultural change and continuity in smoking due to …
Contemplative Vision: Visual Language In The Sermons Of Johannes Tauler, Joshua P. Reifsteck
Contemplative Vision: Visual Language In The Sermons Of Johannes Tauler, Joshua P. Reifsteck
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
Reifsteck, Joshua P. “Contemplative Vision: Visual Language in the Sermons of Johannes Tauler.” STM Thesis, Concordia Seminary, 2022. 91 pp.
Johannes Tauler conceives of thought, contemplation, and mystical experience in visual ways, and this conception manifests in visual language and metaphor throughout Tauler’s preaching corpus. This visual language is influenced heavily by Neoplatonic conceptions of contemplation and the One, and by an interior-exterior tension within Tauler’s anthropology which is especially significant for his portrayal of the senses. This thesis focuses especially upon a group of Middle High German words related to the verb schoͮwen. These words are technical terms, …

The Tang Dynasty : Quatrains : Empty Mountains And Mirror Ponds : High Tang, Charles Egan
How to Read Chinese Poetry Podcast
Although Tang poets all used wujue to record concentrated poetic experience, and pursued the same fundamental aesthetic goals for the form, differing styles of poems can be discerned. Using representative poems by Wang Wei, Wang Zhihuan, and Li Bai, this episode presents two basic styles of Tang wujue, differentiated primarily by the choice of themes and the type of language employed.

Centers Of Community: A Spatial Analysis Of The Mid-19th Century Populaton Residing On Beacon Hill, Boston, Ma, Justin Malcolm
Graduate Masters Theses
The first Black church constructed in Boston, and the oldest extant Black church building in America, the African Meeting House was located on the North Slope of Beacon Hill; the predominant residence of Boston’s Black population during the nineteenth century. The African Meeting House has been the subject of several important archaeological investigations. In 1840, a schism within the African Meeting House congregation resulted in the establishment of the Twelfth Baptist Church. Historical contexts suggest that this neighborhood was highly segregated. A geographic and statistical analysis of the unique 1850 Boston City Census, which was made to yield spatial contexts …

Religion And Peace : Global Perspectives And Possibilities, Nukhet A. Sandal, Ingo Trauschweizer
Ohio University Press Open Access Books
Can religion help societies achieve peace and stability? What actions can religious leaders take to facilitate conflict resolution? This book addresses these critical questions in terms of numerous contemporary conflicts within and between countries.
In the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks, public attention to religion shifted away from its relationship to politics and toward its connection to violence in civil conflicts, wars, and terrorism. Religion’s role in sowing discord became more prominent than its ability to unify. Only recently have discussions turned toward the positive impact of religion and spirituality in the public sphere and to the role of faith …

Globalization and the advancement of technology are giving a new challenge as well as opportunities for English educators around the globe. Indirectly, there are obstacles associated with learning English due to the fact that technology has become an integral aspect of human existence. The teaching of reading skill also faces the same challenge. Nowadays, reading is seen as more important than other skills, considering that reading has become one of the aspects of literacy. With regard to assessment, the availability of an educational application might be advantageous for teachers to assess students' reading skills. The current study investigates the types …

The object of this study is the word lotus. In the Comprehensive Indonesian Dictionary (KBBI), the lotus entry has only one meaning within the botanical domain. However, the word lotus is also present and used in the context of Buddhism in Indonesia. Based on this fact, it is suggested to add a new meaning to the entry. The problem is to decide whether the new meaning is a polysemy or a homonym, and the criteria used to determine this. The purpose of this research is to provide input to the Language Development and Fostering Agency to add new word entries …

Bahasa dan Seni: Jurnal Bahasa, Sastra, Seni, dan Pengajarannya
This study explored the commodification of polygamy in the Air Mata Surga (AMS) movie, adapted from the Air Mata Tuhan novel. The movie was selected for a number of reasons. Firstly, it is an effective transformation medium to reach people with distinctive backgrounds, including their age, social status, domicile, education, culture, language, and even religion. Secondly, polygamy is considered sacred as it is correlated with religion. However, in the industrial sector, polygamy becomes a profane commodity once it is taken as a theme in a movie. Therefore, this study investigated the commodification types of polygamy in the AMS movie and …
