The Laguna Copperplate Inscription: Tenth-Century Luzon, Java, And The Malay World, Elsa; University Clavé, Arlo Griffiths

Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints

The Laguna Copperplate Inscription is one of very few Philippine historical documents dating from the precolonial period and the only one bearing information on the social life of the Manila region before the arrival of the Spanish. Building on previous studies which discussed the significance of the inscription in the context of Luzon and the Philippines, thisarticle proposes a reading of the inscription in the larger context of maritime Southeast Asia. We focus on how this document complicates the current understanding of the historical roles of the Malay language. On this basis, we call for a revision of the notion …

The Woman Question During The Japanese Occupation In Kikuko Kawakami’S And Tsuyako Miyake’S Philippine Diaries (1943), Julz E.; Riddle Sep 2022

The Woman Question During The Japanese Occupation In Kikuko Kawakami’S And Tsuyako Miyake’S Philippine Diaries (1943), Julz E.; Riddle

Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints

Realizing the value of women’s labor in the war effort, the Japanese Empire called for women all over the Greater East Asia Co-prosperity Sphere (GEACPS) to shed Western influence. In 1943 Filipino women intellectuals and two Japanese writers, Kikuko Kawakami and Tsuyako Miyake, held two roundtable meetings to discuss the woman’s role within the “New Order.” Based on Kawakami and Miyake’s hitherto unstudied accounts of these meetings, thisarticle examines the discourse between Filipino and Japanese women, particularly on the women’s position in Japan’s GEACPS. The tensions present in both accounts tell of the complex power relations that informed their dialogues. …

Bagay: A Structural-Phenomenological Discussion Of A Movement, Niccolo Rocamora; Vitug Sep 2022

Bagay: A Structural-Phenomenological Discussion Of A Movement, Niccolo Rocamora; Vitug

Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints

Thisarticle discusses the Bagay movement using critical discourse analysis, a structural approach, and the concept of loob or inner life through a phenomenological approach in the context of the Ateneo de Manila in the 1960s, when the university underwent Filipinization. While literature on social movements is useful in understanding Bagay, concepts from the humanities may further enrich it. Starting as a literary movement that forwarded a poetic style characterized by its novel use of imagery and language, Bagay grew into a social movement that influenced changes within the academic landscape of the Ateneo and various aspects of Philippine culture. Adhkār And Aḥzāb In Islamic Thought And Practice: Invocation And Devotion In Egypt Thirteenth-Fifteenth Centuries, Mariam Ghorab Sep 2022

Adhkār And Aḥzāb In Islamic Thought And Practice: Invocation And Devotion In Egypt Thirteenth-Fifteenth Centuries, Mariam Ghorab

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines discourses around duʿāʾ in the disciplines of ḥadīth, Islamic Law, and Sufism during the thirteenth to fifteenth century Egypt. I argue that duʿāʾ shaped Muslim daily life and solidified a community of prayer. Invocations generated a discursive tradition and social organization that allows us to document the experience of this praying public. Prayer was at the heart of daily life, and its significance to Muslim devotion made it the subject of commentaries that analysed its language and its embodiment. Works of ḥadīth archived the plethora of duʿāʾ’s material. Its various manifestations warranted a thorough legal investigation in …

Re-Evaluating Learning Environments To Nurture Studio Culture, Ceri Almrott

Conference papers

Following the COVID-19 pandemic and the resultant remote teaching that lockdown enforced the requirements and suitability of physical learning spaces such as studios can be questioned. This paper seeks to understand the requirements of students in this decade of their physical studio spaces. Using focus groups, surveys and user feedback activities students on the Product Design programme were asked to evaluate the studio spaces within the university as they returned to on-campus learning and provide qualitative feedback on their experiences.

It was found students still require physical studios that allow them to undertake their design work and utilise tools and …

Popular Culture’S Grip On The Lgbtq Community, Connor Grogan

Pop Culture Intersections

The purpose of this research is to identify the causes and consequences of forming groups within this cultural sphere, specifically focusing on the LGBTQ community. I would contend that the inclusion and exclusion of this marginalized group which exists within a larger community can be promoted or amplified by hegemonic forces through the use of popular culture and mass media. Firstly, with regards to this paper, I will identify what hegemonic power dynamics are within the context of the thesis, as well as what it means to be a marginalized group without much force within a power dynamic. Secondly, I …

Plato’S Market Optimism, Brennan Mcdavid Sep 2022

Plato’S Market Optimism, Brennan Mcdavid

Philosophy Faculty Articles and Research

Despite the extensiveness of top-down control in his ideal city, Plato takes seriously the idea that the market does not require total regulation via legislation and that participants in the market may be capable of self-regulation. This paper examines the discussion of market regulation in the Republic and argues that the philosopher rulers play a very limited role in regulating market activities. Indeed, they are concerned only with averting excesses of wealth and poverty. The rules and regulations that are foundational to the daily functioning of the market – enforcement of contracts, resolution of disputes, etc. – are endogenous to …

The Mary Skubitz Journal consists of ten pages written on ledger paper during the Amazon Army March of December 1921, describing the event.

Mary Youvan Skubitz was born in Slovenia in 1887 and was brought to America in 1890 by her parents Andrew and Julia Youvan. Andrew Youvan worked as a coal miner in Crawford County, Kansas. Mary was one of the leaders at a December 11, 1921 meeting that resulted in the protest that became known as the Amazon Army March on December 12, 1921, in which she participated. In the early 1900s she married Joseph Skubitz, and in …
