Medicine Is Humbling, Victoria E. Coutin Oct 2022

Medicine Is Humbling, Victoria E. Coutin

be Still

As I near the last couple of months of third-year clinical rotations in medical school, this short letter represents my own reflection on the experiences this year that have shaped me.

During your third year of medical school, every month you may find yourself in a completely new environment. These were some of the thoughts that kept me grounded and helped me better integrate myself into each of these new environments.

The Battle Of The First-Year Medical Student, Kimberly A. Kluglein Oct 2022

The Battle Of The First-Year Medical Student, Kimberly A. Kluglein

be Still

I wrote this poem to reflect the way I believe a lot of first-year medical students feel. The internal conflict that arises within ourselves. I personally have doubted whether I am good enough to be where I am today and I know I am not alone in that feeling. A million people could tell you that you are good enough, but it doesn't matter unless you believe that for yourself. I think it is important to take time to reflect and remember even when it is difficult, that you can do it, and that you are worthy.

The Emotionally Competent Pastor, Kevin Spratt Oct 2022

The Emotionally Competent Pastor, Kevin Spratt

Journal of Applied Christian Leadership

A pastor with high emotional intelligence is more likely to be successful in the skills required to lead a church, which will likely produce a healthier church. Stated another way, a lack of emotional intelligence is a potential predictor of pastoral leadership failure, which could lead to an unhealthy church. Current church authors and researchers miss emotional intelligence as a key leadership competency. This article raises the importance of emotional intelligence and suggests that an emotionally intelligent pastor who is both self-aware and socially aware can relationally lead a church well.

La Malinche Or Malinalli?: The Narrative We Know Versus The Narrative We Should, Kiana Rodriguez Oct 2022

La Malinche Or Malinalli?: The Narrative We Know Versus The Narrative We Should, Kiana Rodriguez

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Born with the name Malinalli, La Malinche was an indigenous woman, part of the Nahua tribe, who was sold into slavery as a young girl. She was given as a gift to the Spanish upon their arrival to what we now know as Mexico, and she assisted Hernan Cortés in the conquest of Mexico through translations and guidance. Without her help, Cortés would have been lost, died, or had to turn back around. La Malinche is a complex figure as she is simultaneously viewed as a traitor by some, and hailed as the mother of Mexico by others. The purpose …

Engaging And Mobilizing Baby Boomers For Effective Ministry, Paul D. Russell Oct 2022

Engaging And Mobilizing Baby Boomers For Effective Ministry, Paul D. Russell

Doctor of Ministry (DMin)

In the 21st-century church in America, can Baby Boomers, who presently range from 57 to 76 years of age, be envisioned and commissioned to make a difference through effective and meaningful ministry? The intent of the research was to discover relevant information and present considerations to help those entering the last third of life make an informed contribution to the church and community. Evidence will be presented to show that Boomers need the church and that the church needs the presence and resourceful productivity of the Boomer cohort. This reality does not circumvent the essential mission of reaching other generations …

A Planetary Imagination: Responses To Chakrabarty’S Socio-Natural Historiography, Editorial Introduction, Jeremy Bendik-Keymer

Faculty Scholarship

Dipesh Chakrabarty’s 2009 essay in Critical Inquiry, “The Climate of History: Four Theses” sent tremors through the environmentally aware humanities in the 2010s. Last year, he published the book that brought that essay forward into the present, The Climate of History in a Planetary Age. It’s no overstatement to think of this book as having clanged the bell for a new normal in the humanities and social sciences when it comes to telling the story of ourselves, that is, when it comes to human history. Responsible history should today be geological even when recounting the human record. Chakrabarty raised a …

Acknowledging Women's Efforts Within The Whaling Industry, Elizabeth Ruff '26 Oct 2022

Acknowledging Women's Efforts Within The Whaling Industry, Elizabeth Ruff '26

Best First-Year Seminar Writing

The whale fishing industry was a prominent economic force during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, fueled not only by the men who worked aboard the whaling ships but more importantly by their wives and the other women back on the East Coast. In Lisa Norling’s book Captain Ahab Had a Wife the women and wives of the maritime men are claimed to be the essential sustaining influence for those within the whale fishing industry. Despite these women never having been on a whaling voyage, their actions back at home and communications with those aboard are what kept the men at …
